Score-George Washington Bridge. An impression for Concert Band by William Schuman.'There are few days in the year when I do not see the George Washington Bridge. I pass it on my way to work as Idrive along the Henry Hudson parkway on the New York shore. Ever since my student days when I watched the progress of its construction this bridge has had for me an almost human personality and this personality is astonishinglyvaried assuming different moods depending on the time of day or night the weather the traffic and of course my own mood as I pass by.I have walked across it late at night when it was shrouded in fog and during thebrilliant sunshine hours of midday. I have driven over it countless times and passed under it on boats. Coming to New York City by air sometimes I have been lucky enough to fly right over it. It is difficult to imagine a moregracious welcome or dramatic entry to the great metropolis'. - William Schuman

Phillip Neil Martin's Human Drum for three voices (SSA). Duration: 3 minutes Composed: 2006 Also published as part of UYMP's Songspin Songbook ISMN M 57036 603 3. Human Drum was a collaboration with the Juice Vocal Ensemble. The piece began in the recording studio where I recorded Juice singing notated fragments I’d popped together and also their own improvisations. I then edited and cut up all the audio into very tiny fragments in a myriad of ways to make a short rhythm-based electronic 3 part vocal piece. This forms part of my larger work Voices of the Asylum for voices human beatbox electronics fashion andspace. The final track bares very little resemblance to the original recording studio session. Several weeks after I had finished Human Drum Juice asked me to transcribe the audio so they could sing the piece live (which wasn’t easy to do after all the cutting and processing!) therefore coming full circle! There are now two versions of Human Drum the studio electronic track and the ‘live’ notated version. Human Drum is dedicated to the Juice Vocal Ensemble with affection. First performed by Juice Vocal Ensemble on 3rd May 2007 at York Spring Festival Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall University of York.

Jan Van der Roost was commissioned to write this hymn by the ?International Association for Human Rights? in Frankfurt. The commission specified that the instrumentation of this simple hymn should be so that it can be performed by a variety of combinations of players. The piece starts with an ?intrada? for brass ensemble based on the first bars of the hymn but is ?ad libitum? and can therefore be omitted. The coda can also be left out depending on the available instrumentation. The piece should be played ?legato? to accentuate its hymn-like character.

Two Human Hymns comprises of settings for six-part choir and organ of two poems by 17th century English poets who are almost exact contemporaries; George Herbert and Henry King.The music for the choir is mostly composedin simple songlike shapes which are little hymns. The texts though clearly relate to Christian beliefs could be more widely applicable to all human experience which is why they have called them 'Human Hymns'.Thus Love BadeMe Welcome (G.Herbert) whilst obviously a Christian allegory can be read as a gently hypnotic love song and it is attempted to capture something of this atmosphere in the setting. Like to the Falling of a Star (H.King) although it mentions no God could be a Calvinist sermon capping its lovely account of the wonders of nature with an almost operatically sinister denouement. In the first half of the piece the music bubbles upwards fresh andoptimistic; in the second half like all those doomed sinners it is going down down down.The first performance was given by University of Aberdeen Chapel Choir on 22nd October 1995.
