UPC: 680160908974. 9 x 12 inches. Key: G major. The title, Live On, by Larry Clark, is taken from Chrissie Pinney's poem about grief and loss. The piece is meant to depict the personality of Linda Mann, to whom it is dedicated. The opening is poignant and pensive, followed by a whimsical theme which alludes to happy thoughts of a life well-lived. The piece builds to a triumphant?conclusion based on an augmented version of the theme.
Live On was commissioned by Diplomat Middle School's staff, faculty and students in Cape Coral, Florida, and is dedicated to the memory of their Director of Bands, Linda Mann. Director of Orchestras, Roland Forti, championed the commissioning of this piece to honor the life of Linda after her untimely passing in February of 2017. Linda Manns impact on the field of music education was profound and wide-reaching. She was a beloved member of the staff at Diplomat Middle School, as well as the music community of Cape Coral and the state of Florida. Linda was highly respected throughout the state, serving as recent past-president of the Florida Bandmasters Association. In discussing the type of piece the school wanted to honor Ms. Mann, they indicated the piece should depict Lindas personality - dynamic, sassy, yet thoughtful and almost mentor-like. They wanted a piece that was upbeat, yet still had moments that were thoughtful, portraying the grief that the Diplomat Middle School community has suffered from the sudden loss of such a beloved teacher. After contemplating their thoughts, I did some research to find inspiration for the piece. This led me to poetry about grief and loss. In time, I stumbled upon a short, yet poignant poem that I felt perfectly depicted the sentiment that I wanted the piece to convey. That poem is entitled Live On by Chrissie Pinney. Live On Now as I live on Without you I hope to keep The pieces of you That I loved so dearly Your mannerisms And compassionate character And smiles through struggle So that you May live on too -Chrissie Pinney I reached out to Ms. Pinney, and she graciously agreed to allow me to quote her powerful poem in these notes. She expressed that she was deeply touched that her work would inspire me to write a piece in honor of Linda Mann. The piece begins with a poignant, pensive opening section. The use of the musical interval of a tritone between the first two openly voiced chords are used to represent the sadness we all feel from this type of loss. When I sat in front of my piano and started to work on this piece, my hands seemed to naturally and immediately play these first two chords, which set the process in motion of composing the piece. After the somber opening, the piece shifts to a whimsical theme that I hope brings about happy thoughts of Linda and her personality. It was also my intent, however, to include some musical dissonance in the theme that still reflected the bittersweet loss at the same time. The piece develops into a secondary theme that is a quasi inversion of the main fast theme. This section is followed by a return of the opening material, with snippets of the fast theme intertwined, before the piece builds to a triumphant, augmented presentation of the main theme in a lush form to complete the work. It is my hope that in some small way, this piece will bring comfort to those affected by the loss of Linda Mann, and that the music will allow her memory to Live On. Larry Clark Lakeland, FL 2017 . It is my hope that in some small way, this piece will bring comfort to those affected by the loss of Linda Mann, and that the music will allow her memory to Live On. -Larry Clark Lakeland, FL 2017. Linda Mann’s impact on the field of music education was profound and wide-reaching. Mann, they indicated the piece should “depict Linda’s personality - dynamic, sassy, yet thoughtful and almost mentor-like.†They wanted a piece that was upbeat, yet still had moments that were thoughtful, portraying the grief that the Diplomat Middle School community has suffered from the sudden loss of such a beloved teacher. After contemplating their thoughts, I did some research to find inspiration for the piece. This led me to poetry about grief and loss. In time, I stumbled upon a short, yet poignant poem that I felt perfectly depicted the sentiment that I wanted the piece to convey. That poem is entitled Live On by Chrissie Pinney.Live OnNow as I live onWithout youI hope to keepThe pieces of youThat I loved so dearlyYour mannerismsAnd compassionate characterAnd smiles through struggleSo that youMay live on too -Chrissie PinneyI reached out to Ms. This section is followed by a return of the opening material, with snippets of the fast theme intertwined, before the piece builds to a triumphant, augmented presentation of the main theme in a lush form to complete the work.It is my hope that in some small way, this piece will bring comfort to those affected by the loss of Linda Mann, and that the music will allow her memory to Live On.–Larry ClarkLakeland, FL 2017. Summer Dance is a melodic, up-tempo piece with plenty of musical and technical challenges for every player. Musicians should strive to play it with an energetic yet legato feel. A spirited introduction features an opening melody in the violins and active repeated-note pedal patters in the violas and low strings. An AABA form begins at m.5 and the orchestration is immediately pared down to feature violin I and cello. It then builds again in density to the B section, where a quick dynamic drop allows a question-and-answer melody between the two parts to sing out. In m. 29, the melody is harmonized and a countermelody in violin I introduced. The violins take the melody soaring in octaves in m. 33, as the piece again builds to the B section and suddenly quiets. Measure 55 then provides more question-and-answer interplay, this time for viola and cello, while violin continues with its newly harmonized melody. Summer Dance finishes with a soft recurrence of the opening figure and a build toward a powerful divisi voicing on beat 3 of m. 63, right before the final chord. Peter Terry's The Lightning Catcher celebrates youth and the mysteries of summer nights. The wonder of lightning bugs and the hours spent chasing, catching, and releasing them back are childhood staples for many. With bold gestures and textures, this dramatic piece takes the audience back in time to the days of their youth. The Lightning Catcher is a piece that celebrates youth and the mysteries of a summer night. These mysteries include the wonder of lightning bugs: spending hours chasing them, catching them in jars and then releasing them back into the night, only to catch them again on another perfect night. Coupled with this experience are memories of summer thunderstorms moving across the Great Lakes and a certain naive wish that this too could be caught in a glass jar for later release. The Lightning Catcher is a dramatic work with big, bold gestures and textures. Make sure that you reserve enough volume and energy to make the ending the biggest point in the piece. I enjoyed writing this piece and hope your students will enjoy playing these contrasting styles and that you will find the piece beneficial in teaching important musical concepts. Peter Terry, 2018 . String Quartet SKU: HL.14023641 Composed by Michael Nyman. Music Sales America. 20th Century. Score. Composed 1993. 80 pages. Chester Music #CH61116. Published by Chester Music (HL.14023641). ISBN 9780711964082. 9.0x12.0x0.219 inches. String Quartet No.4 was written for the Camilli Quartet who gave the first performance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, April 1995. It is dedicated to the memory of Nyman's composition teacher, Alan Bush. This quartet is a narrative made up of a chain of twelve complete but often cross-related movements, each quite simple in design. For instance, the Scottish melody first heard in the second half of I is hinted at in the 2nd violin/viola in the second fast section of II and is directly quoted again during III and XII. The theme of the fast section of IV is taken up again in VIII; IX reverts to the mood of the opening of I, while the rising scale/syncopated themes of II, IX and the bass of X and XII are related. X also reintroduces the slow harmonics theme from VII. XII is (apparently) cast in the form of a baroque French rondeau. The main theme of VI was plucked out of the Quartet and used in my score for Christopher Hampton's film Carrington. Duration 40 minutes. A set of parts is available for sale. $43.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Orchestra String Orchestra - Grade 2-2.5 SKU: CF.YAS13F Composed by Muzio...(+)
Orchestra String Orchestra - Grade 2-2.5 SKU: CF.YAS13F Composed by Muzio Clementi. Arranged by Douglas Townsend. Carl Fischer Young String Orchestra Series. Classical. Full score. With Standard notation. 12 pages. Carl Fischer Music #YAS13F. Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.YAS13F). ISBN 9780825848339. UPC: 798408048334. 8.5 X 11 inches. Key: G major. IApart from some of his Sonatinas, Opus 36, Clementi's life and music are hardly known to the piano teachers and students of today. For example, in addition to the above mentioned Sonatinas, Clementi wrote sixty sonatas for the piano, many of them unjustly neglected, although his friend Beethoven regarded some of them very highly. Clementi also wrote symphonies (some of which he arranged as piano sonatas), a substantial number of waltzes and other dances for the piano as well as sonatas and sonatinas for piano four-hands.In addition to composing, Clementi was a much sought after piano teacher, and included among his students John Field (Father of the 'Nocturne'), and Meyerbeer. In his later years, Clementi became a very successful music publisher, publishing among other works the first English edition of Beethoven's Violin Concerto, in the great composer's own arrangement for the piano, as well as some of his string quartets. Clementi was also one of the first English piano manufacturers to make pianos with a metal frame and string them with wire. The Sonatina in C, Opus 36, No. 1 was one of six such works Clementi wrote in 1797. He must have been partial to these little pieces (for which he also provided the fingerings), since they were reissued (without the fingering) by the composer shortly after 1801. About 1820, he issued ''the sixth edition, with considerable improvements by the author;· with fingerings added and several minor changes, among which were that many of them were written an octave higher.IIIt has often been said, generally by those unhampered by the facts, that composers of the past (and, dare we add, the present?), usually handled their financial affairs with their public and publishers with a poor sense of business acumen or common sense. As a result they frequently found themselves in financial straits.Contrary to popular opinion, this was the exception rather than the rule. With the exception of Mozart and perhaps a few other composers, the majority of composers then, as now, were quite successful in their dealings with the public and their publishers, as the following examples will show.It was not unusual for 18th- and 19th-century composers to arrange some of their more popular compositions for different combinations of instruments in order to increase their availability to a larger music-playing public. Telemann, in the introduction to his seventy-two cantatas for solo voice and one melody instrument (flute, oboe or violin, with the usual continua) Der Harmonische Gottesdienst, tor example, suggests that if a singer is not available to perform a cantata the voice part could be played by another instrument. And in the introduction to his Six Concertos and Six Suites for flute, violin and continua, he named four different instrumental combinations that could perform these pieces, and actually wrote out the notes for the different possibilities. Bach arranged his violin concertos for keyboard, and Beethoven not only arranged his Piano Sonata in E Major, Opus 14, No. 1 for string quartet, he also transposed it to the key of F. Brahm's well-known Quintet in F Minor for piano and strings was his own arrangement of his earlier sonata for two pianos, also in F Minor.IIIWe come now to Clementi. It is well known that some of his sixty piano sonatas were his own arrangements of some of his lost symphonies, and that some of his rondos for piano four-hands were originally the last movements of his solo sonatas or piano trios. In order to make the first movement of his delightful Sonatina in C, Opus 36, No. 1 accessible to young string players, I have followed the example established by the composer himself by arranging and transposing one of his piano compositions from one medium (the piano) to another. (string instruments). In order to simplify the work for young string players, in the process of adapting it to the new medium it was necessary to transpose it from the original key of C to G, thereby doing away with some of the difficulties they would have encountered in the original key. The first violin and cello parts are similar to the right- and left-hand parts of the original piano version. The few changes I have made in these parts have been for the convenience of the string players, but in no way do they change the nature of the music.Since the original implied a harmonic framework in many places, I have added a second violin and viola part in such a way that they not only have interesting music to play, but also fill in some of the implied harmony without in any way detracting from the composition's musical value. Occasionally, it has been necessary to raise or lower a few passages an octave or to modify others slightly to make them more accessible for young players. It is hoped that the musical value of the composition has not been too compromised, and that students and teachers will come to enjoy this little piece in its new setting as much as pianists have in the original one. This arrangement may also be performed by a solo string quartet. When performed by a string orchestra, the double bass part may be omitted.- Douglas TownsendString editing by Amy Rosen. Chamber Music Piano, soprano Saxophone SKU: PR.114419290 Composed by Chen Yi. Edited by Chen Yi. Arranged by Wong Tak Chiu. Sws. Score and parts. 44 pages. Duration 20 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #114-41929. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.114419290). ISBN 9781491135235. UPC: 680160676118. 9 x 12 inches. Supported by a major commissioning award from the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation in the Library of Congress, my Chinese Folk Dance Suite is written for violin solo and orchestra, and premiered by The Women's Philharmonic with violin soloist Terrie Baune, conducted by Apo Hsu, on March 10, 2001, at Yerba Buena Center For the Arts Theater in San Francisco. Inspired by various Chinese traditional folk dances, I've composed three movements in the suite: 1) Lion Dance. Traditionally, people dance with richly decorated hand made lions, accompanied by percussion ensemble, to celebrate happy occasions and major festivals throughout the country. In the composition, I use Chinese drum and other percussion instruments in the background, to form a dynamic and rhythmic texture responding to the solo part, which imitates the tunes played on the suona (traditional Chinese trumpet). The pitch materials came from traditional Guangdong Music tune and Chaozhou Music tune ; 2) YangKo. Originated in northern China, it's a major folk dance form in mass performance popularized in the country. In YangKo performance, people always play rhythmic patterns on the drums hung around their waists while singing and dancing. In my second movement, I have imagined a warm scene of YangKo dancing in distance. The solo violin plays a sweet and gracious melodic line while all members in the orchestra sing the non-pitch syllables in different layers as the soft background, to imitate the percussion sound which produces the ever going pulse. 3) Muqam. It is a large scale traditional music and dance form from Uygur nationality in Xinjiang province, originated in the 15th century. In my third movement, I keep the meter of seven eight and the melodic style of Muqam music. The fiery dancing gesture cumulates the sustained climax section at the end of the work, after a colorful violin cadenza in both improvisational singing style and polyphonic writing with woven lines. Scored for 2 flutes (2nd doubling piccolo), 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in Bb, 2 bassoons, 4 French horns in F, 2 trumpets in Bb, 3 trombones, percussion 1 (3 congas, low tom-tom, temple block, paddle castanets), percussion 2 (snare drum, 6 small Beijing opera gong, 12 big Beijing opera gong, crotales, tambourine), percussion 3 (suspended cymbal, a pair of 6 Chinese cymbals, bass drum), solo violin, violins I, violins II, violas, cellos and double basses. Duration is about 16 minutes. The work is recorded on Bis [CD-1352] and released in 2003, performed by Cho-Liang Lin and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, cond. by Lan Shui. Reduction for B-flat soprano saxophone and piano by Wong Tak Chiu (2017) and edited by Chen Yi (2018) The second movement YangKo is premiered by Dr. Wong and Korak Lerpibulchai at the Singapore Saxophone Symposium on 8/13/2017. The American premiere of the saxophone and piano reduction version of Chinese Folk Dance Suite is given by Chi Him Chik and Hao Yin at the Society for American Music National Conference in Kansas City, MO on 3/2/2018. $26.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

The term Doppler effect describes the aural phenomenon of pitch produced by a moving source changing relative to position, like a siren passing you on the street. Sean O'Loughlin uses this fascinating concept to construct an original composition that uses instances of this effect. A broad melody acts as a connective element in the piece, with a multitude of teaching opportunities for dynamics and musicality. The term Doppler effect is defined as the shift in frequency of acoustic or electromagnetic radiation emitted by a source moving relative to an observer as perceived by the observer. Yes, it is when the siren comes at you at one pitch and leaves you at another pitch. I found this a fascinating concept to construct an original musical composition with. There are plenty of instances of this effect, but I also created a broad melody to act as a connective element to thework. There are also a multitude of teaching opportunities for dynamics and musicality. The opening material should be played very mysteriously and by exaggerating the dynamics. Make the change from p to f as big as you can. The whole opening section builds up to a big arrival at m. 15. From there, we're off to the races with a rhythmic version of the effect. Again, bring out the range of the dynamics for maximum effect. The main melody appears at m. 30 and should be played with much lyricism as a contrast to the pulsing rhythmic activity underneath. The rhythmic pulse evaporates at m. 38 to leave a warm chorale-like section. A big presentation follows at m. 46. The chorale-like section returns at m. 54. Keep that same warmth of sound as before. The next big event happens at m. 67, where the Doppler effect is in full force. Exaggerate those dynamics and bring out the ascending lines in the celli. This leads to a climactic arrival at m. 92 where the main melody is augmented with lush power chords supporting the sound. The rhythmic energy returns at m. 98 to drive the music to a heroic ending. Orchestra String Orchestra - Grade 2-2.5 SKU: CF.YAS19F Composed by Alan Lee Silva. Carl Fischer Young String Orchestra Series. Classical. Full score. With Standard notation. 12 pages. Summer Dance is a melodic, up-tempo piece with plenty of musical and technical challenges for every player. Musicians should strive to play it with an energetic yet legato feel.A spirited introduction features an opening melody in the violins and active repeated-note pedal patterns in the violas and low strings. An AABA form begins at m. 5 and the orchestration is immediately pared down to feature violin I and cello. It then builds again in density to the 13 section, where a quick dynamic drop allows a question-and-answer melody between the two parts to sing out.In m. UPC: 680160903979. 9 x 12 inches. Key: D major. Barn Dance Saturday Night depicts the gathering of hometown country folks for a square dance. Different from a rousing fiddle tune, in that the tempo is a bit more reserved, it is happy music that will be fun to play and will delight your audiences. I wrote this piece several years ago for one of my groups which met during the last period of the day. They loved to play what they called “Happy Music,†because it perked them up and they left school in a good mood. The arrangement I wrote then was quite group specific; this version should fit most orchestras very well, and itspreads the melody around more. This work is not intended to be intimidating or profound in the least but, instead, should evoke smiles. However, that does not mean that it should be played in a sloppy manner or without a diligent attitude. The staccatos are very important. Players should take special care not to clamp down on the bow with their bow holds in order to make the notes short; they can be executed by using relaxed wrist andfingers alone, if that is what the teacher wants their players to be learning while preparing this piece. There should be only good tone on those notes, and accents should not be added where not indicated unless instructed to do so by the teacher. There are notes in this piece with a tenuto mark (full value, but clearly defined) AND a staccato mark (separated). I want these notes to be clearly enunciated; not short, but not sustained into the next note, either. The key to doing this well may come in m. 48, where the basses and cellos must make a retake going into m. 49. The length of the quarter notes in m. 44 should match the length of the quarter notes in m. 48. Janácek’s 2nd String Quartet, “Intimate Lettersâ€, is regarded as a highlight of the modern string quartet literature. It was written during the composer’s last year of life, between 29 January and 19 February 1928, inspired by the ageing Janácek’s exceptional love for Kamila Stösslová. The Moravian Quartet devoted themselves to this impressive work; Janácek attended a total of three of their rehearsals in May and June 1928. This had several consequences, including his abandoning his original idea of using a viola d’amore.
After Janácek’s unexpected death (12 August 1928) the uncertain genesis of the work became the greatest problem of the “Intimate Lettersâ€: the surviving copies were not definitively authorised.
The editors of this new edition have reverted to Janácek’s autograph sketches as the main, most reliable source and using these as a basis, have reconstructed the work as it stood at the point of Janácek’s death.
The musical text therefore contains clear differences in comparison with older editions.

Orchestra Cello, Contrabass, Piano, Viola, Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3 - Grade 2 SKU: CF.YAS150 Composed by Larry Clark. Young String Orchestra. Set of Score and Parts. With Standard notation. 8+2+8+2+5+5+5+8 pages. Duration 3 minutes, 54 seconds. Carl Fischer Music #YAS150. Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.YAS150). ISBN 9781491143568. UPC: 680160901067. Key: G major. A heartfelt piece that is dedicated to the memory of a lost student, the music is both emotional and beautiful. It is meant to depict the life of the person lost, not the sadness. In typical Larry Clark fashion, the piece has memorable melodies, interesting lush harmonies and is well-scored. This will be a great vehicle to improve the musicianship of your students. Heartstrings began its life as the main musical material for a piece I wrote called Forever Climbing. It was a concert band work that was commissioned by the Boulder Creek High School Band under the direction of James O'Haloran. It was dedicated to the memory of Trevor Crouse who died tragically in a climbing accident. When Ifinished that piece, I just knew that I was not finished with the main musical ideas and decided it would work very nicely for strings.Certainly in the face of losing a loved one it would pull on your heartstrings, but when I was composing this piece I also wanted to bring about the love that we have for our close friends and family members. I hope that you will hear love in the piece along with a touch of sadness. Certain harmonic choices and dissonances in the melody to the harmonies were used to bring about this emotional feeling. I take great pride in writing music for young people that stretches their musicianship. When I work with students, I ask them to put their emotions into the music stretch phrasing, push lines, and giving things shape; make the music more than what is on the page. Bring it to life and make the audience feel something with their performance. It is my sincere hope that it will inspire them to do so and expand their musical horizons. I continue to honor the memory of Trevor and the memory of those loved ones I have lost as well.It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.—Larry ClarkLakeland, FL 2016. Students and audiences alike will be taken by this piece from the very first note. It is an excellent piece to teach young string players about waltz style. As a child, I enjoyed roller skating at an amusement park in Portland Oregon named Oaks Park. I remember the waltz music playing as the announcement came Couples only, or All skate. Years later in New York City, I awakened from sleep one morning with the theme of this waltz in my ears. It was so cheerful and corny that I asked myself You’ve got to be kidding me, where did this melody come from? I realized it was my original. I notated it immediately, and a few weeks later I added the second musical theme and named it Central Park Waltz. It reminds me of the skating rinks that I have enjoyed over the years. As the title of this piece implies, Dance of Salome is a mysterious-sounding piece with a Middle Eastern feel. Composer Joseph Compello has crafted a serious musical work for intermediate intermediate string players, with infectious melodic figures and incessant rhythms. This work will do a wonderful job of highlighting the strengths of your budding ensemble. Perfect for contest or festival performance. The Dance of Salome is a concert piece for a young string ensemble. The music should convey an atmosphere of antiquity; and, it should also be bold and aggressive. The middle, contrasting section beginning at m. 42 should be played legato without losing the persistent rhythmic drive. The following may be new to young players:1. Counting for the echoing figure which first appears at mm. 9-10. The two echoing figures are separated only by an eighth rest.2. Slurring eighth notes in groups of two.3. Hooked bowing.4. Eighth notes grouped in a 3+3+2 pattern appear throughout the piece, the first time at m. 21.5. The meter change at m.40.6. A≥ mm. 57 and 63. E≥ at m. 63.This arrangement has been recorded by Carl Fischer. The performance is available online free of charge. Thank you for choosing this composition. I hope you and your students enjoy performing it.Joseph CompelloGlen Arm, Maryland. 2 pianos, 4 hands SKU: BO.B.3641 Composed by Daniel Basomba. Published by Editorial de Musica Boileau (BO.B.3641). These Three Studies for Four-handed Piano were conceived of as a triptych whose unifying principles were to be the first-slow-fast movement order of the classical sonata and a symmetrical arrangement of tonalities with A major occupying the centre (F minor- A major- C minor). The term Studies alludes not so much to the 19th century pedagogical concept of pieces-as-exercises, as to an attempt to extend, investigate and study the possibilities of expression and texture of the piano for four hands.
The First Study is generated out of a single rhythmical motif whose development is modified by the intervention of two contrapuntual passages. A certain difficulty of execution arising from the need to cross hands in both sections of the keyboard conforms, in this case, to the traditional definition of study as an exercise focussed on a specific technical problem.
The second piece might be defined as a study of expression, being the explicit disposition of an ostinato accompaniment and two superior voices in conversation. I cannot help, listening to this study, being reminded of the texture of the slow Largo of Bach's Concerto for 2 violins and the manifest pathos of the Andante of Prokofiev's 2nd Violin Concerto.
The Third Study is an exercise in rhythmical interpenetration in which continual changes of accentuation and metre are combined with passages of a light and mellifluous character.
It is a long-standing ambition of mine to supplement this work with three more triptychs and, so, complete a set of twelve studies for four-handed piano. $24.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

This is a striking and original piece that builds interest and momentum using a four note cello and bass ostinato. Arco and pizzicato contrasts of texture and off-beat accents and rhythms sustain interest in this unusual selection, which puts minimal musical resources to maximum use. A Road Less Traveled is a musical journey based on four notes. The cellos and basses provide these notes in mm. 2 and 3. The piece explores some new compositional techniques for me, and in some sections can be considered minimalist. However, I constructed the piece in a very accessible manner. The individual rhythms create new composite rhythms when played together. It has a unique clockwork quality to it. The music morphs from arco to pizzicato at m. 49. The odd accents bring out some of the quirky quality to the music. A return to arco playing at m. 94 provides a recapitulation of the opening section. Upon return, some of the punchy music now becomes sustained for a dramatic climax. This piece was a real joy to work on, and illustrates “a road less traveled†in my compositional career.
