Organ Symphony No. 2 (2017) was written for and is dedicated to German organist Philip Hartmann. In all of my works that employ larger-scale forms (not just organ compositions), I am continually looking for different ways of providing the form and structure. My first organ symphony (2013) comprised three larger movements that charted a progression from dark to light. By contrast, this second organ symphony comprises 12 shorter movements that together build a larger structure out of varied emotional states. Although the movements are different in character, there are connections of harmony and motive across them. One goal behind this work is that it be suitable for effective performance on almost any organ, small or large. Most organ symphonies require a large instrument. By contrast, this piece can be played effectively on even a small organ with a limited number of stops (even a one manual organ with an octave pedal board). It can also be very effective on a large symphonic organ with many different colors and a huge tutti. Registration is left to the performer's discretion, and the organist is strongly encouraged to use the full extent of whatever resources are available. Hymn tune with words by Mary Louise Bringle and music by Jean Sibelius There are times in life that bring unavoidable circumstances and our limited understanding must be directed to God. Mary Louise Bringle wrote this emotional text for a friend who was dealing with her mother's Alzheimer's desease, and the frailty that mortal bodies suffer. Set to the tune, FINLANDIA, this sensitive arrangement provides comfort to those who care for loved ones in these situations. The anthem builds to a hopeful conclusion and climax proclaiming, All joys remain, unshadowed light pervading. No valued deed will ever be undone.

The cantata Christ lag in Todes-Banden is a mixed chorale cantata that sets the first and last verses of the corresponding Luther chorale verbatim, but the other movements in free poetry based on the content of the chorale. The time of composition cannot be clearly determined, but at the end of the copy that serves as the basis for the edition, there is a date of January 1693. According to this, the composition was written before 1693 and thus well before Johann Kuhnau took up his post as Thomaskantor in Leipzig (1701). The use of two cornetti is also a parallel to the cantata Lobe den Herren, meine Seele(PB 32091), whose composition can be linked to Kuhnau's stay in Zittau. The two parts marked Cornett are only in the first two movements of the cantata; in the further course, a collaparte lead would be possible, but cannot be proven. In principle, according to the source, the two cornett parts can also be played by violins. The title page also notes the possibility of adding ripieno singers, i.e. a choir, in the non-soloistic movements. The cantata, according to its text intended for Easter, is very well suited for use in church services with its small size and flexible scoring.

Composed by Claude Barthelemy, Okawati's is the first piece from the series Irrawady (also named Asia is running through my ears) for Alto or Soprano Saxophone and electro-acoustic system. Commissioned by a Cultural Centre, this series is made of four parts and two interludes (without Saxophone) and was used as a piece of contest. This particular piece, Okawati's is representing a hotel located in between rice fields in Bali. At night, there is no silence but the noise of frogs and birds flying around. The player is supposed to impersonate one of the birds. Lasting 5'34 minutes, the score of this piece is written in modern writing and requires some good knowledge of modern and contemporary pieces and some very good technical knowledge. Quite unusual and fun to play, it also includes a CD which features the part of the electro-acoustic system. It is followed by: - Interlude I - Ubud - Le dos des caimans - Interlude II - Gazebo.

The Magnificat was commissioned in 2017 by the Landesakademie fur die musizierende Jugend in Baden-Wurttemberg for the Choir of the International Choir Festival C.H.O.I.R. In this setting of the hymn of praise from St Luke's gospel, we hear the solo soprano as the voice of Mary. The work draws on the wealth of Afro-Caribbean rhythms. The first movement gives a hymn-like expression to the message of the text with the tremendous energy of the Cuban salsa. There are many examples of the relationship between word and music throughout the work. An example of this is the passage Deposuit potentes (He hath put down the mighty from their seat and hath exalted the humble and meek). In this passage, a 9-part canon vividly portrays the words et exaltavit and deposuit through chromatic passagework in contrary motion extending over an octave. With this work composer Bobbi Fischer has created a musical bridge between Europe and South America as well as stylistic links to his Missa latina (Carus 28.007). The rhythm group (piano, bass, drums, and percussion) is identical; new instrumental colors from the Latin world are added with two obbligato violins and one reedplayer (alto saxophone/flute) - in the place of the bandoneon and violin used in the Missa latina. The Magnificat is also available on CD (Carus 83.483).

Composer's Note: This quartet was written by a relatively inexperienced writer for strings (me) so, technically, my notation may be unorthodox (or standardly wrong). But I find that most string quartet players, knowing that, will go ahead and make the proper adjustments themselves. This is better than trying to alter the musical concept to fit the correct technical point. Hippocrates is the name of a little robot in a science fiction series by L. Ron Hubbard. With the publication of Volume 11 in November 1999, Werner Breig's fundamentally new scholarly concept begins to make itself felt more strongly. All editorial differences aside: with respect to their contents, Volumes 9-11 can be neatly categorized as the Tristan letters volumes, the genesis of each act of Tristan und Isolde can be assigned to one specific chronological section. Wagner was working on the first act (beginnung his correspondance with Mathilde Wesendonck at the same time) in Zurich during the period of the letters compiled in Volume 9. Volume 10 plays in Venice and documents the origin of the second act. And in Volume 11, the reader can relive the completion of the epoch-making stage work in the letters Wagner sent from Lucerne. Concerning this Volume we have obtained the following fax by the English Wagner expert Stewart Spencer, who wittily praises Werner Breig's fundamental new concept: There is a general problem of reviewing such magnificent volumes. They are the yardstick by which all other writings on Wagner will be judged. It is like sending someone to inspect the standard metre rule in Paris and asking them to review it. All one can say is that it exists and that it is in a class of its own. I'd like to congratulate you on its publication and thank you most warmly for picking up this edition. The trio sonata is regarded as one of the core chamber music genres of the 17th and 18th centuries. Corelli remains to this day its best-known exponent, but also before and after him there was a multitude of exceptional works in the genre that remain largely unknown today. This two-volume catalogue raisonné has finally brought these treasures to light. Thanks to support from the Balzan Foundation and the University of Zurich, this catalogue now offers the first-ever bibliography of the genre. It encompasses all the published trio sonatas of the 17th and 18th centuries, and also provides detailed information on sources and works, plus introductory commentaries. This printed catalogue will be complemented by an online database with enhanced search functions that will enable both scholars and practising musicians to explore this fascinating repertoire. Note by the composer: “This piece was written in 2006 (for violoncello and piano) for an exhibition dedicated to artists suffering from schizophrenia. The basis of the piece is a sequence of four chords, very simple and minimalistic. A person with schizophrenia hears voices that can be very disturbing; there is a longing for silence. I wrote this piece so that my son Alex, who suffers from the illness, could hear silence and meditation from it. It's called Blue Silence because blue is sometimes associated with healing.†Elena Kats-Chernin.
