Today Monteverdi's Selva morale et spirituale (1641) stands entirely in the shadow of his famous Vespers 1610. The editions from 1610 and 1641 both include music for the Mass and Vespers, but each of these collections was composed under much different circumstances during Monteverdi's lifetime. If the works of 1610 are a bold combination of traditional compositional techniques and avant garde music, which were intended by this weary Court Composer at Mantua as an application portfolio for a new job, the 1641 collection is the only church music by the mature Monteverdi which was published after almost thirty years in his position as Music Director of St. Mark's Cathedral: the latter, a kind of best of collection from his many years of experience as a church musician. In Venice the composer had not only a fabulous, but a large ensemble at his disposal (finally, about 35 singers, alone)! The big effect in this music is the combination of soloistic and weighty tutti sections, it makes the music, with its clearly defined sections and, for the most part homophonic choral passages more easily performable than the Vespers for today's choirs. The new edition, comprised initially of three volumes, also includes those works from the Selva Morale (a Mass and two Magnificats) which have already been published by Carus, as well as all further liturgical compositions for use in the church. Salmi II contains the additional settings of the multiple settings of the psalms and also the psalm Memento (each of the first of the multiple settings of the psalms are to be found in the Salmi I volume). The edition is based on the methods employed in the much acclaimed Carus edition of the Vespers: - It contains a detailed foreword with suggestions for notation, scoring and for the liturgical use of individual compositions. - For the present edition four of the five surviving printed copies, as well as contemporary manuscript were consulted. Facsimiles illustrate special characteristics of the edition of 1641. A Critical Report makes clear all of the editorial decisions made in the edition. - All of the pieces are printed untransposed and using the original note values. - All of the pieces are available in single editions with complete performance material. - Vocal scores of all works with obbligato instruments facilitate rehearsal. - Instrumental parts for collaparte accompaniment of tutti-sections (including text underlay).

Commissioned by the San Francisco Choral Society and the Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir, Terra Nostra is a 70-minute oratorio on the relationship between our planet and humankind, how this relationship has shifted over time, and how we can re-establish a harmonious balance. Part I: Creation of the World explores various creation myths from different cultures, culminating in a joyous celebration of the beauty of our planet. Part II: The Rise of Humanity examines human achievements, particularly since the dawn of our Industrial Age, and how these achievements have impacted the planet. Part III: Searching for Balance questions how to create more awareness for our planet’s plight, re-establish a deeper connection to it, and find a balance for living within our planet’s resources. In addition to the complete oratorio, stand-alone movements for mixed chorus, and for solo voice with piano, are also available separately.
Terra Nostra focuses on the relationship between our planet and mankind, how this relationship has shifted over time, and how we can re-establish a harmonious balance. The oratorio is divided into three parts:Part I: Creation of the World celebrates the birth and beauty of our planet. The oratorio begins with creation myths from India, North America, and Egypt that are integrated into the opening lines of Genesis from the Old Testament. The music surges forth from these creation stories into “God’s World” by Edna St. Vincent Millay, which describes the world in exuberant and vivid detail. Percy Bysshe Shelley’s “On thine own child” praises Mother Earth for her role bringing forth all life, while Walt Whitman sings a love song to the planet in “Smile O voluptuous cool-breathed earth!” Part I ends with “A Blade of Grass” in which Whitman muses how our planet has been spinning in the heavens for a very long time.Part II: The Rise of Humanity examines the achievements of mankind, particularly since the dawn of the Industrial Age. Lord Alfred Tennyson’s “Locksley Hall” sets an auspicious tone that mankind is on the verge of great discoveries. This is followed in short order by Charles Mackay’s “Railways 1846,” William Ernest Henley’s “A Song of Speed,” and John Gillespie Magee, Jr.’s “High Flight,” each of which celebrates a new milestone in technological achievement. In “Binsey Poplars,” Gerard Manley Hopkins takes note of the effect that these advances are having on the planet, with trees being brought down and landscapes forever changed. Percy Bysshe Shelley’s “A Dirge” concludes Part II with a warning that the planet is beginning to sound a grave alarm.Part III: Searching for Balance questions how we can create more awareness for our planet’s plight, re-establish a deeper connection to it, and find a balance for living within our planet’s resources. Three texts continue the earth’s plea that ended the previous section: Lord Byron’s “Darkness” speaks of a natural disaster (a volcano) that has blotted out the sun from humanity and the panic that ensues; contemporary poet Esther Iverem’s “Earth Screaming” gives voice to the modern issues of our changing climate; and William Wordsworth’s “The World Is Too Much With Us” warns us that we are almost out of time to change our course. Contemporary/agrarian poet Wendell Berry’s “The Want of Peace” speaks to us at the climax of the oratorio, reminding us that we can find harmony with the planet if we choose to live more simply, and to recall that we ourselves came from the earth. Two Walt Whitman texts (“A Child said, What is the grass?” and “There was a child went forth every day”) echo Berry’s thoughts, reminding us that we are of the earth, as is everything that we see on our planet. The oratorio concludes with a reprise of Whitman’s “A Blade of Grass” from Part I, this time interspersed with an additional Whitman text that sublimely states, “I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love…”My hope in writing this oratorio is to invite audience members to consider how we interact with our planet, and what we can each personally do to keep the planet going for future generations. We are the only stewards Earth has; what can we each do to leave her in better shape than we found her?

An ABRSM syllabus title.The source of the present edition of the Recorder Concerto in C minor by Antonio Vivaldi is the Collected Works of Vivaldi edited by Malipiero, published by Ricordi 1953. The title of the original score is Concerto in Do minore per flauto, archi e cembalo the original setting: Flauto, Violini I-II, Viole, Violoncelli, Contrabassi and Cembalo. The arrangement for recorder and piano is kept in accurate conformity with the musical text of the score the continuo part, however, has been more freely adapted (of course within the possibilities of baroque style). In contrast to previous arrangements, the piano part contains the entire orchestral material in theTuttis, thus the soloist is not obliged to play all the Tutti parts. However, in Movement I and III the first and last Tutti may never be omitted by the performer.

The Original version of 1868/69 consists of seven scenes in one prologue and three acts: 1. Courtyard of the Novodevichy monastery - 2. Square in the Kremlin. Coronation scene. - 3. When the work was rejected by St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theater Mussorgsky followed the advice of friends and revised the opera. In the Final version of 1871/72 he expanded the fifth scene scrapped the sixth and added three new scenes so that the opera now consisted of nine scenes in one prologue and four acts:

Great opera in only 10 minutes! An impressive early work by Puccini is finally available as sheet music: The composer wrote the cantata I figli d’Italia bella in 1877 for a competition held by the province of Lucca. The text is a paean to Italy’s brilliant artistic tradition, remembered through the country’s great artists. The cantata has a rather eventful history: Considered lost for many years, a set of parts turned up about 20 years ago in which, however, the vocal solo was missing. Subsequently, the cantata was only performed with a reconstructed solo part. Then in 2019, an anonymous and previously unattributed manuscript was identified as an autograph of Puccini. It became clear that this was the missing complete score! Now we can hear how the composer captured the text in thrilling style with solo tenor, choir and large orchestra to create a vibrant work brimming with youthful sparkle and energy.The cantata perfectly complements Puccini’s Messa di Gloria (Carus 56.001), another early work by the composer that here and there shows some operatic tendencies.
