PRELUDE AND TOCCATA FOR PIANO by Marc Douyon is based on the Haitian folk tune Linglinsou. The main theme quotes this folk melody, which is then developed with various compositional techniques. Original secondary themes and motives by the composer are an integral part of the colorful musical tapestry as well. The composition opens with a lyrical melody that suggests an atmosphere of complaint, anguish, and despair. But soon, the lyrical main theme, which makes use of hemiola figures, takes the shape of a gracious tribal dance in compound meter. Shortly thereafter, however, the character of the piece changes into an agitated toccata characterized by driving staccato notes, accents, and a close hand position at the piano. The final moments of the piece are heroic-like in nature, but also convey a sense of calm after the storm.

The developing variation-like use of this theme speaks to the image or notion of growth; the growth of a tree, of a person, or a choir. We may start out small, then vary, change, develop, transform. The vocal line’s slight variation, use of repetition, imitation, and canonic-like movements weave a thread of familiarity through the piano’s tapestry of subtle shifts in timbre, register, and alternation between chorale-like writing and moments of florid flourishing; the music paints the imagery of the text.The text by Leslie Grant Scott illuminates themes of the humanity, solace, and comfort we find in Nature. The forest’s foliage filters out the harshness of the world, and we are calmed by the forest’s heart. Following the melancholy theme of mourning in a minor key we also hear the happy memories in major key and also the knowledge that the person who has gone to ‘a better place’is now at peace. This is a soulful and calm work that leaves plenty of space for the musicians’ and listeners’ own thoughts. This set includes optional parts for piano and vibraphone.

The Other Side is geschreven als afscheid van een geliefde persoon. Behalve het melancholische mineurthema komen in dit werk ook mooie herinneringen in majeur naar voren. Bovendien klinkt in de muziek de hoop door dat de betreffende persoon nueen goed leven heeft ‘aan gene zijde’.
