The sky creates a dazzling display of yellows, oranges, and reds, before turning a calm blue, then purple, and finally black. Such sunsets inspired Jan de Haan to write this piece for solo flugelhorn and brass band. It is dedicated to his daughter, Hermanda.

Zonsondergang. De zon verdwijnt langzaam aan de westelijke horizon. De hemel is in rode en oranje kleuren getooid... Deze prachtige aanblik was de inspiratie voor dit ontroerende solowerk voor bugel en brassband. (ook verkrijgbaarvoor hobo en harmonieorkest of bugel en fanfareorkest). Jan de Haan schreef het in de herfst van 2008 en droeg het op aan zijn dochter Hermanda.

Sonnenuntergang: Die Sonne verschwindet langsam am westlichen Horizont. Der Himmel ist in Rot- und Orangetöne getaucht. Dieser oft erlebte, aber immer wieder aufs Neue prachtvolle Anblick bildete die Quelle der Inspiration für ein ruhiges, aber intensives und damit sehr eindrucksvolles Solowerk für Flügelhorn und Brass Band, das Jan de Haan im Herbst 2008 seiner Tochter Hermanda widmete.

Il tramonto del sole ispira da sempre pittori, fotografi , scrittori, poeti e anche compositori. Jan de Haan si è lasciato sedurre da questo istante meraviglioso, quando il cielo inventa infinite sfumature di arancio e rosso, su uno sfondo appena visibile di azzurro. Spettacolo grandioso che si ripete da sempre, ma che non finisce mai di stupire. In Sweet Sunset il ruolo principale è affi dato al flicorno.

Thomas Adès's Violin Concerto Concentric Paths, written in 2005, is one of the most important additions to the violin concerto repertoire since Ligeti's. Cast in three contrasting movements?each linked by a preoccupation with circling musical figures? the concerto, subtitled Concentric Paths now occupies a place in standard repertoire. Two lithe, rhythmically driven movements, Rings and Rounds bookend Paths, an intensely emotional and gritty exploration of passacaglia-like sequences, which peaks in a lyrical outpouring of exceptional beauty. This is the violin part and piano reduction.

In just 20 minutes, this three-movement piece does something magical. The way it swirls ethereally in the first movement, exerts a tragic and vice-like grip in the chaconne-like second part and finally propels you into the uninhibited flight of the finale is like being spun into an infinite space.

Written during a residence at an artist community in the isolation of Wyoming, Postcards from Wyoming is an impression of the wilderness and beauty of the surrounding landscape and its inhabitants. Written for Pierre ensemble with percussion, Postcards includes High Plains Prairie (a harsh landscape which reveals glimpses of beauty upon closer examination), Call of the Wild (animals from snakes to horses and cows populate the environment), and The Solitude of Stars (capturing the infinite awe of the night sky).
In 2014, I enjoyed a wonderful residence at the Ucross Foundation in Clearmont, Wyoming. Ucross is an artist colony that gives writers, composers, and visual artists the gift of time, space, and support to follow their artistic pursuits; we are provided with studio space, housing, and meals so that we can work almost continuously on our projects. I have been in residence at numerous artist colonies; however, nothing in my previous experiences prepared me for living in such isolated, wild country. Ucross is situated on a 20,000-acre cattle ranch at nearly 4,000 feet in elevation with fewer than 150 people living within the town. But what Clearmont lacks in population, it makes up for abundantly and spectacularly in wilderness and wildlife. Postcards from Wyoming presents three glimpses of what I found to be the most striking aspects of my residence. The first movement, High Plains Prairie, represents the conundrum that is a high elevation landscape: from afar, the eye sees little else than an unending and threadbare horizon. But as one inspects the land up close, the prairie bursts with color provided by sagebrush, grasses, insects, and creeks. The second movement, Call of the Wild, is a tribute to the wide range of animals that reside in the area. Deer, turkeys, and rabbits frequently passed outside of my studio window; cows and sheep lived in fields close by. Snakes, raccoons, and field mice also made guest appearances. While I'm thankful that I didn't see any predators (such as wolves), I became increasingly aware of the wildness of the animal population that surrounded my studio. The Solitude of Stars, the third and final movement, was inspired by the stunning nightly display of the heavens above. Without city lights dimming the night sky, countless stars shone brightly over the vast expanse of the prairie. Postcards from Wyoming was commissioned by the 2016 Utah Arts Festival. -S.G.
