The atmosphere of the Wild West is caught in a striking and most imaginative way by young composer Andreas Schulte in this work.
A caravan of gold- and fortuneseekers launch themselves into a big adventure and begin their rush westward.

The first movement desciribes these first days of buoyancy and optimism in a crisp march.
Near the campfire the pioneers rest themselves, and the music expresses feelings of romance, nostalgia for the past and hopes for the future.
A wistful melody very characteristically communicates these feelings.
Relaxation takes place in the third movement which is a musical characterization of a rodeo and its attendant festivities.
It is obvious that sometimes something goes wrong and this aspect can also be heard.
Nevertheless, the valiant rider wins in the end.
With a flashback to the beginning, the journey is completed musically, thus giving the composition a dignified finale.

Een karavaan van goud- en gelukzoekers stort zich in het grote avontuur en begint de grote reis naar het westen.

Het eerste gedeelte beschrijft de eerste dagen van opgewektheid en optimisme in een vlotte mars.
Bij het kampvuur komen de pioniers tot rust en worden gevoelens van romantiek, heimwee (verleden) en hoop (toekomst) muzikaal weergegeven.
Een weemoedige melodie verwoordt die gevoelens op een zeer kenmerkende wijze.
De ontspanning vindt plaats in het derde deel waarin een rodeofeest muzikaal wordt verklankt.
Met een flashback van het begin wordt de tocht voltooid en de compositie waardig afgesloten.

In a four-part composition Rieks van der Velde takes us to the richly varied area surrounding the university city of Cambridge.
The Dutch composer was especially inspired by the atmosphere of Cambridgeshire, the county which lies north ofLondon.

1. The Journey.
Although on arrival the area looks peaceful and friendly, the ruggedness of its inhabitants and landscape have an unmistakable influence on the music.
In the course of the tour, which starts with an Allegromovement, we are shown the vitality, energy and freshness of the Cambridgeshire countryside.
Short themes, swift and sudden motifs and rhythmical patterns supported by the drive of percussion instruments give expression to this image.
Thefirst part is concluded by two Calmo movements in which the music expresses how the cathedral in the city of Ely comes into sight and is gradually approached.

2. Visit to Ely Cathedral.
The famous Norman cathedral church of Ely, whichwas built in 1109, has attracted tourists from all over the world apart from being a place of worship and heritage site.
A cornet solo introduces the contemplative mood of the composition at this point.
The mystical atmosphere of thecathedral runs through this lyrical part like a continuous thread.

3. The Pub.
The thirst caused by this intensive journey makes a visit to the local pub a definite must.
These “public houses”, which may be open until the earlyhours of the morning, offer all kinds of entertainment.
Drinks are served liberally and the atmosphere is lively.

4. The Journey Back.
Time has flown: In other words, the moment of departure has come sooner than one would havewished.
In a flashback which recaptures elements of the first part of the composition we say goodbye to Cambridgeshire in a fitting manner.
Two scintillating final measures bring us abruptly back to the present.

In een viertal delen neemt Rieks van der Velde ons mee door de zeer gevarieerde streek rond de universiteitsstad Cambridge.
De Nederlandse componist liet zich inspireren door vooral de sfeer in het graafschap Cambridgeshire ten noorden vanLonden.

1. The Journey.
De aankomst in de streek is vriendelijk te noemen doch de grilligheid van de mensen en het landschap heeft een onmiskenbare invloed op de muziek.
De rondreis welke start op het Allegro laat Cambridgeshire zienals een streek van vitaliteit, energie en frisheid.
Korte themas, flitsende motiefjes en ritmische patroontjes gesteund door stuwend slagwerk bevestigen dit beeld.
Het eerste gedeelte besluit met twee Calmo gedeelten waarbij het zicht op dekathedraal van de stad Ely en het naderen ervan wordt aangegeven.

2. Visit to Ely Cathedral.
In 1109 werd de beroemde kathedraal van Ely gebouwd die tot op de dag van vandaag een grote aantrekkingskracht geniet van niet alleentoeristen.
Het rustpunt van de compositie wordt ingeleid door een cornetsolo.
De mystieke sfeer van de kathedraal is de rode draad in dit lyrische gedeelte.

3. The Pub.
Een intensieve rondreis maakt dorstig en een bezoek aan depub is uiteraard een must.
Tot 11 uur s avonds kan men er terecht voor alle vormen van vertier. De drank vloeit rijkelijk en de sfeer is feestelijk.

4. The Journey Back.
Er is een tijd van komen en gaan, en dat moment komt eerder danje zou willen met andere woorden de tijd is omgevlogen.
Met een flash back naar het eerste deel wordt op passende wijze afscheid genomen van Cambridgeshire.
Twee flitsende slotmaten zetten ons in één klap weer in het hier en nu.

Bakashot are piyyutim (religious poems) which are sung late at night mostly on Sabbaths and holidays. These poems have many spiritual and mystical influences, and their origin is among the Sephardic Jews before the Expulsion from Spain. The singing of the bakashot was expanded during the 16th Century, particularly by the mystics in Safed, and appears also in the singing of the the maftirim among Turkish Jews.
These four miniatures for oboe solo are personal prayers written in the inspiration of the bakashot.
Daniel Akiva is a composer, performer, and educator whose performances on guitar and lute have won great acclaim. Mr. Akiva graduated from the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem in 1981, where he studied classical guitar with Haim Asulin and composition with Haim Alexander. In 1987 he completed his studies at the Geneva Conservatorium in Switzerland where he studied lute with Jonathon Rubin and composition with Jean Ballisa. For many years, he headed the Music Department at the WIZO High School for the Arts in Haifa, which he founded in 1986, and served as the Artistic Director of the Guitar Gems Festival from 2006-2019. As part of his work at WIZO High School, he has developed a method for teaching free improvisation that has been incorporated into the music program at the school.
Mr. Akiva has appeared in concert as a guitarist and lutist and given master classes in Israel, Europe, Russia, the United States, and Latin America. Daniel Akiva’s compositional output includes works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, choir, voice and guitar, piano, and chamber orchestra. His works have been recorded on twelve CDs, the latest of which, Malchut, was issued by OR-TAV in 2014.
A native of Haifa whose family has lived in Israel for over five hundred years, he was steeped in the Sephardic (Jewish-Spanish) tradition from his youth. Much of his compositional output has been devoted to a dialogue with the music of the Sephardic Jews. Daniel Akiva has also maintained a creative dialogue over many years with the poets and writers Amnon Shamash, Rivka Miriam, and Avner Peretz.

After Missa Latina and Magnificat, Te Deum is now the third major composition by musician and composer Karl Albrecht “Bobbi” Fischer published by Carus. Fischer’s musical roots lie in classical music, which he combines with jazz elements and Latin American rhythms.

All three styles appear in the Te Deum. In keeping with the proclamation “Te Deum laudamus” (We praise thee, O God), the work begins with the festive (Cuban) energy, propelled by timpani and trumpet; the choir can also be heard imitating fanfares. Later, a cappella choruses become a recurring element, in which phrases set as Gregorian chant are presented against an ever-changing chordal background. But the score also features elements of swing and rhythm & blues, frenetic choral outbursts of joy, as well as moments of mystic contemplation. Moreover, the instrumentalists are given ample opportunity for improvised solos. Interwoven into the otherwise Latin text is the well-known German chorale Großer Gott, wir loben dich. Here several verses can be sung with the congregation; alongside the original German text, the score features the English translation “Holy God, we praise thy name”.

Inspired by the mascot of Falls Church High School in Virginia, this piece depicts the fierceness and speed of the jaguar. The exciting motif in the key of A minor follows the jaguar deep into the Mayan jungles, with mystical hints of the deity it was once believed to be. In ancient Mayan ruins, carvings of the jaguar are still visible today. They tell a story of the powerful cat whose eyes reflected in the night, leading the Maya people to call it the god of terrestrial fire. The music follows the jaguar on a hunt with driving rhythms in the cellos and basses, a brief violin solo, and an energetic melody that runs and leaps like the mighty jaguar, fearless and proud.
