Apple Records was a noble experiment created in the spirit of the 1960s by four musicians who came to represent everything that was best about those tumultuous, experimental, and liberating times. The Beatles started out with the greatest of intentions, but reality soon got in the way. Much has been written about this period in the history of The Beatles' evolution and dissolution---some of it true, some of it wildly exaggerated, but not much of it first-hand. The Longest Cocktail Party is a rare exception. Written by Richard DiLello, who served as Apple Record's 'House Hippie' from 1968 to 1970, this unusual first-hand glimpse into The Beatles' empire humorously chronicles the stranger-than-life stories that were to become legendary, including visits by the Hell's Angels and endless tales of celebrity antics. Alfred Music is proud to offer this latest edition, which features a new and insightful foreword by the author. Originally published by Playboy Press in 1972, The Longest Cocktail Party has proven itself a timeless chronicle of this most colorful period in pop history. / Divers

The Real Book you know and love has now been updated to include backing tracks for 240 songs on one convenient USB flash drive stick! The play-along CDs alone are worth $100 so this is an amazing package price! The Real Books are the best-selling jazz books of all time. Since the 1970s, musicians have trusted these volumes to get them through every gig, night after night. The problem is that the books were illegally produced and distributed without any reqard to copyright law or royalties paide to the composers who created these musical masterpieces. Hal Leonard is very proud to present the first legitimate and legal editions of these books ever produced. An Anatomy of Position Playing for Jazz Guitar. Par MOONEY DAVY. If you?ve ever wondered about the depth of thought vs. pattern playing that goes into jazz guitar improvisation, you?ll find the answer in this book. University of North Texas jazz guitar instructor and stellar musician, Davy Mooney is as fluid in writing about the physical and cerebral processes of jazz guitar improvisation as he is in playing over tunes, chord changes and modulations. Mooney describes the guitar fretboard as ??a labyrinth ruled by shapes and patterns.? He recounts his own journey toward fretboard fluency beginning with the CAGED major scale positions and connecting them with ascending arpeggio shapes. The purpose of his book is to show you a way into the labyrinth, how to navigate it, and find your way out, should you so desire. Five is the magic number in this book. With five jazz chord progressions, fretboard scale and arpeggio diagrams in five positions, and transcribed eighth-note improvisations, Mooney illustrates how five giants of jazz?Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Thelonious Monk, and John Coltrane?might have approached improvisation had they been jazz guitarists. Written in standard notation and fretboard diagrams for the intermediate to advanced guitarist already well-acquainted with jazz scale and chord theory. Includes access to online audio for all 60 etudes, play-along and improv examples. / Date parution : 2022-07-23/ Etude / Guitare

Par MC NEFF STEPHEN. My research for Banished began with a small group of students during a Trinity Laban co-lab period in 2013, though the idea goes back over 30 years when I first saw Steve Gooch’s Female Transport and stored the idea of adapting it as an opera until the right opportunity arose. I have been involved in opera for a long time and it has always been a frustration for me that while there is an abundance of female talent (particularly so in conservatories and colleges) there is a noticeable lack of challenging roles available for young women. The roles most often undertaken are maids or innocent girls, compliant wives or tomboys. Not that the problem is necessarily confined exclusively to young women, but where good roles exist, the women are all too often merely passive or victims. Things happen to them rather than them making things happen. They are unable to influence their circumstances and are usually resigned to their fate. Worse still, they are often judged in some way responsible for what happens to them, culpable even because of their looks, their way of life or a streak of independence. Just think about Mimi, Carmen and Violetta (to name only three on a long list). All these characters die, and their attempts at individuality contribute to their demise in some way that they have no control over. With some exceptions female characters in opera are too often sad, mad or bad.
Redressing this balance and taking advantage of the richness in vocal talent is only one reason to write an opera reflecting the reality of a group of strong women who work things out for themselves. The transportation of people to Australia at the beginning of the nineteenth century is not a particularly well understood part of history beyond a sort of folk myth. What were the circumstances, who were the people and what happened to them? Opera does not exist to completely answer these questions, but it can focus on the women as individuals and help tell their story. (All the women named in the opera actually existed.)
My approach has to been to put the women’s narrative centre stage and, in the confines of an oppressive, dangerous environment go with them on their journey as they survive or sink. The demands on the women are huge. At every turn they are oppressed by their jailers, the system that brought them here and their own low expectations. They have to work out ways to overcome these odds. We discover them through their music in solos and ensembles, sometimes reflective, at other times boasting about their lives a petty criminals and trying to establish status and pecking order. Alongside this I have used references to music of the time to create another reality built on larger ensembles and choruses. This is a sort of collective consciousness aware of loss, longing and context – even of a broad political dimension to the realities of Transportation. Despite the acute awareness of their circumstances in these ensembles, there is also a resilience and strength that transcends the individual stories. This book is a fitting tribute in the form of a detailed account of his life, a timeline of key moments in his long career, with photographs and portraits, as well as a selection of songs from every phase of his extraordinary musical journey, from Folsom Prison Blues in 1956 to Hurt in 2002.

Op. 38. Par ELGAR EDWARD. This is the best of me, wrote Edward Elgar after the final measure of his Dream of Gerontius. Premiered in 1900, in Great Britain the work has long been a standard work in the repertoire of large oratorio choirs. Elgar’s moving, poetic setting of the eponymous poem by Cardinal John Henry Newman is about a dying man and his journey beyond death to God. Before the eyes of the listeners, a musical image of the soul is created which flies past mocking demons to God with its protecting angel at its side, is allowed to look at him briefly, then faces the purgatorial fire of salvation confident and comforted. The work is a real rarity in the history of oratorio, and for large choirs it is a thrilling alternative to the established repertoire of Requiem settings. Its popularity is thanks to the suggestive, often sensuous power of the music, the great choral scenes of the demons and the Angel, and the three impressive solo parts. All previous editions were reprints based on the historic first printed materials, which are inconsistent. By contrast, Carus has produced a modern, newly-engraved edition, compatible in all sections, which takes all the sources into consideration and evaluates the autograph manuscript in detail. For this edition the complete orchestral material is available on sale, and the vocal score and full score contain both English and German singing texts. The full score is also available digitally. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Répertoire / Solistes, Choeur SATB et Piano

Based on the Critical Edition- Orchestra material on hire. Par MAHLER GUSTAV. The large-scale form of 'Symphony No. 9' is unusual in a number of ways. It reminds in no way of the ninth symphonies of famous predecessors. Two slow movements, an Andante comodo at the beginning and an Adagio at the end, form the frame for two of the most parodistic and embittered inner movements that Mahler ever wrote - a ländler-waltz combination, and the 'Rondo-Burleske', a bitter, ironic movement that is derisively dedicated 'to my brothers in Apollo'. The most extraordinary part of Mahler's last completed symphony must certainly be the slow finale - a 20-minute long intensively singing movement laden with conflict that includes references to earlier works by Mahler, in slow motion as it were ('Urlicht',' Ablösung im Sommer', the 'Scherzo of Symphony No. 3', 'Der Abschied' from 'Das Lied von der Erde', and 'Oft denk' ich, sie sind nur ausgegangen' from the 'Kindertotenlieder'); it indeed seems that a circle is being closed. (Reinhold Kubik) Universal Edition continues its new study score standard. These completely redesigned scores offer an unparalleled insight into the music of the last hundred years. Great care has been taken to select the best available content for this journey through music history, and every score has been edited according to the latest quality standards./ Répertoire / Orchestre

The composer writes:Pilgrim was inspired it will be no surprise to learn by reading Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress - Vaughan Williams's great opera on the subject had fascinated me from its first performance yet it was a long time before I caught up with this essential item in any well-stocked library of English classics. It made a great impression not least because of its theme of a journey of self-discovery and a rediscovery or renewal of faith. These are ideas which have a strong interest for me not in religious terms but in their application to every aspect of human life (including great journeys) and this piece reflects my response in musical terms to this concern. The tempo of the whole piece which lasts about 18 minutes is basically slow. There are two quick episodes but these act somewhat like the trio sections of a classical scherzo save that the tempo relationships are inverted (the classical trios would have been slower not quicker) and the canvas is much larger being that of a single substantial slow movement. The form of the whole is perhaps fantasia-like rather than having any relationship to classical forms such as sonata or rondo - some motifs and themes are varied as the work develops and the opening chords are of primary importance throughout the work. There has been no attempt to convey any pictorial elements deriving from Bunyan's great book. There is however one feature which upon completion of the score struck me with some force which is that almost all the thematic material is essentially striving upwards - there is a constant upward movement (sometimes over a lengthy period) throughout the work. Pilgrim was commissioned by the Luton Music Club for the Raphael Ensemble with funds provided by the Eastern Arts Board and Bedfordshire County Council and is dedicated to the Luton Music Club. The first performance was given in Luton on February 10th 1997 and followed as part of a joint scheme by performances in the same week at the Music Clubs of Bedford and Leighton Buzzard.

Par VAN NUETEN GUY. Contact by Guy Van Nueten originated from the feeling of being abandoned, such as a person who treks through a barren desert following a great disaster and asks himself if there's any point in carrying on when every day brings just more of the same - still more desert. I suspect that each of us has such a desert within himself, but that it depends on circumstances whether or not we choose to make the journey through it. Contact lays out a path that we can share. This music seems especially romantic to me, in the sense that the sounds have much to say about loneliness. There are moments where this album emphasises its own seriousness, then immediately afterwards invites us todance. Contact sticks out a hand, sometimes two, mostly to show the internal process of the composer - firstly the lack of fire and the abandoned longing for this, followed by the bewilderment that there is something that is still smouldering and that can be fanned into a blazing forest fire to burn away all the pain of desolation. For this reason it is also moving music - because it wants the recognition of the listener, wants us to feel our own desolation while the piano explores further depths and heights. At times a composition is almost carelessly abandoned and another one begun. Whoever looks closely at feelings and is honest with himself and the world is always a little cruel. But finally there is an end to that desert - he sees an oasis and also a beautiful hotel. Upon entering, he sees no-one, not even at the desk, but the reigning play of light and colour is of an otherworldly power. Maybe no other people are needed here and the beauty that prevails is enough. Then sounds of music arise and some people move across to the immense hall where a wing has been set up, behind which a man is sitting, his fingers moving across the keyboard. And only one thing is real: after desolation comes comfort. That person is you and that person is me. And that music is called Contact, directly from the soul of Van Nueten. Journey of the Lone Wolf tells the story of the hungarian composer Béla Bartók...(+)
Journey of the Lone Wolf tells the story of the hungarian composer Béla Bartók. It was commissioned by Dr. Nicholas Childs for Black Dyke Band who gave the first performance on Sunday 26 January 2014 at the Bridgewater Hall Manchester as part of the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass. The composer's programme notes for each movement:1. Capturing the Peasants SongAfter the upheaval of moving to Budapest the young Béla Bartók meets Zoltán Kodály and the pair embark on summertime adventures throughout the Hungarian countryside to collect and catalogue the astonishingvariety (both harmonically and rhythmically) of gypsy and folk music heard in the Balkans. The arrival of WW1 plunges Bartók's beloved Hungary into chaos.2. Night MusicBartók was at times a cold man aloof and lonely. The odd moments of tenderness he showed are portrayed here in a series of evocative solos. His brief but intense affairs speak of a love he could only long for. Jazz is my night music and here there are hints of what Bartók may have heard in the USA later in his life.3. Flight and FightHaving been forced by the world's evils to leave his homeland of Hungary for America Bartók the anti-fascist felt isolated and angry. In this movement we hear his longing for a simpler time of gypsy folk dances as well as his maturity and depth as a composer finally exploring deeper colours and darker themes.
