Frigyes Hidas (1928-2007) was the most prolific Hungarian composer for wind ensembles, and his works are the most often performed. His worldwide popularity is based on works such as Balettzene (Ballet music), Vidam zene (Cheerful music), El nem tancolt balett (Undanced ballet), Requiem and Save the Sea. His folk song suites, which are enormously popular in his homeland, are fine examples of Hidas' mature style in the genre of folk song arrangements. The first suite works up nine folk songs of differing character and atmosphere, while the second, with its recurrent structure, makes use of five melodies, creating a modern harmonic environment around them and thereby highlighting even more the beauty of the melodies. To perform these works effectively, ample technique is required, as well as an ability to shape the music freely. Highly recommended for ensembles with an interest in Hungarian wind music and folklore.

This impressive work was composed for the Dutch-Friesian city of Leeuwarden, which was considered the â??cultural capitalâ?? of Europe, 2018; the composer spent his college years in this city. This festive work for bagpipes, drums and concert band is based on the melody of the anthem of the province of Friesland. Proud was written for the music event, Grutsk, which is the Friesian word for proud hence the title. Various bands have performed on five different stages across the town centre. The finale was performed in a concert held at Wilhelminaplein (Wilhelmina Square), which opened with this work. This world premiere was conducted by the composer himself. The bagpipes areoptional, but advisable. As a whole, they give the composition a very special sound. Dit indrukwekkende werk is gecomponeerd in het kader van Leeuwarden als Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa in 2018. In deze stad heeft de componist ooit zijn studententijd doorgebracht. Het feestelijke werk voor doedelzakken, drummers en blaasorkesten is gebaseerd op de melodie van het volkslied van de provincie Friesland. Proud werd geschreven voor het muziekevenement Grutsk. Dit is het Friese woord voor trots vandaar de titel. Op vijf verschillende podia in de binnenstad traden diverse bands op. Afsluiting vormde het concert op het Wilhelminaplein, dat met dit werk werd geopend. Deze wereldpremière werd gedirigeerd door de componist zelf. De doedelzakstemmen zijn optioneel,maar wel wenselijk. Ze geven de gehele compositie een bijzondere klankkleur. Dieses eindrucksvolle Werk wurde für die holländisch-friesische Stadt Leeuwarden geschrieben, die Europäische Kulturhauptstadt 2018 ist. In dieser Stadt verbrachte der Komponist seine Studienjahre. Sein festliches Werk für Dudelsack, Trommler und Blasorchester basiert auf der Hymne der Provinz Friesland. Proud wurde speziell für die Veranstaltung Grutskâ?? geschrieben, was auf Friesisch so viel Stolzâ?? bedeutet und somit den Titel des Stückes erklärt. Auf fünf verschiedenen Bühnen im Stadtzentrum führten es mehrere Blasorchestern auf. Das Finale bildete ein Konzert auf dem Wilhelmina-Platz, das mit Proud eröffnet wurde. It tells the story of a wind band embracing hard work, friendship, musical excellence, love, marriage and birth, as well as the sad loss of cherished members. Composer Philip Sparke decided to salute the history of the Canadian concert band 'Harmonie de Charlesbourg' with a work that falls into two contrasted sections. One Vision deals with forming the band and the subsequent united desire to create an ensemble espousing the idea of musical perfection. The Pursuit of Excellence salutes the 20 years of hard work of the wind band. This concert work ends with a chorale of thefull band, symbolising the fulfilment of a united dream! Het werk weerspiegelt het verhaal achter de Harmonie de Charlesbourg vanaf het begin in 1993. Dat verhaal kent vele facetten en behelst verschillende aspecten van het menselijk bestaan: hard werk, vriendschap, het streven naar muzikale schoonheid, liefde, huwelijk en geboorte, maar ook het droevige verlies van gewaardeerde leden. Componist Philip Sparke besloot dit alles weer te geven in twee contrasterende delen: het eerste, One Vision, verklankt Francois Dorions vooruitziende blik bij de oprichting van het orkest en de daaropvolgende wens om een ensemble te creeren dat het ideaal van muzikale perfectie zou omarmen. Het tweede deel, The Pursuit of Excellence, is een odeaan twintig jaar van grote inspanningen waardoor de Harmonie de Charlesbourg de nagestreefde doelen heeft kunnen bereiken: inmiddels neemt het orkest een trotse plaats in binnen het muziekleven van Quebec. Sir Eu was commissioned by the regional music authority of Upper Austria and the brass band SoundINNBrass. The composition was meant to be very virtuoso and was written for the euphonium player Steven Mead, who premiered it and has played it regularly worldwide. The title Sir Eu alludes to the master of the euphonium himself, and also to the concept of Europe. From jazz through romanticism to folkloristic elements - this work offers everything that the musical heart could wish for!Sir Eu is geschreven in opdracht van de deelstaat Opper-Oostenrijk en de brassband SoundINNBrass. De compositie moest heel virtuoos zijn - toegesneden op de talenten van euphoniumspeler Steven Mead, die de premiere voor zijnrekening nam en het werk overal ter wereld heeft gespeeld. De titel verwijst naar deze meester op het euphonium, maar ook naar het Europese beginsel. Van jazz en romantiek tot folkloristische elementen biedt dit werk alles wat hetmuzikale hart begeert.Sir Eu wurde von der oberosterreichischen Landemusikdirektion und der Brass Band SoundInn-Brass in Auftrag gegeben. Das Stuck sollte ausserst virtuos und massgeschneidert fur den Euphoniumspieler Steven Mead sein, der es urauffuhrte und bis heute weltweit regelmassig spielt. Der Titel Sir Eu ist eine Anspielung auf den Meister des Euphoniums und zugleich an den europaischen Gedanken. Von Jazz uber Romantik bis hin zu Folklore-Elementen ist in diesem Stuck alles zu finden, was das musikalische Herz begehrt.Sir Eu est une œuvre de commande conjointe du Comite Regional pour la Musique de Haute-Autriche et du Brass Band SoundINNBrass. Cette composition, taillee sur mesure pour le maitre de l'euphonium Steven Mead, est d'une grande virtuosite. Steven Mead en assura d'ailleurs la creation et la promotion sur les scenes du monde entier. Le titre fait reference a la fois au dedicataire de la piece et au concept europeen.
