Focusing on the lives of saints and other holy people, Journey of the Sacred is a series of books and music created to guide members of small faith communities on their own sacred journeys. Unlike many other guides of this kind, Journey of the Sacred incorporates music into each session with a pre-recorded CD for singing along to chosen hymns and songs. Each journey offers six sessions consisting of prayer, Scripture, writings by the particular saint or holy person, reflection, silence, sharing, and an experience by a modern-day person that ties into the session's theme. Each session also allows for a going forth in action for the group or individual. One book is needed for each member of the small faith community. One CD is needed for the entire group. Although created for small group sessions, this series also may be used for individual meditation. Journeys may be used in any order. Rosemary Bleuher is Associate Director for Adult Formation for the Diocese of Joliet, Illinois and is known nationally for her work in small faith communities. Denise La Giglia is a spiritual director, musician, and recording artist from the Chicago area. Rev. Dennis Paul is a priest of the diocese of Joliet and ministers at St. Mary Nativity. Robert Piercy is the Catechetical Coordinator for GIA Publications, Inc. .

In May of 2011, Neil Young drove a 1956 Crown Victoria from his idyllic hometown of Omemee, Ontario to downtown Toronto's iconic Massey Hall where he intimately performed the last two nights of his solo world tour. Along the drive, Young recounted insightful and introspective stories from his youth to filmmaker Johathan Demme. Demme, a long-time fan and collaborator, captured these tales of Young's childhood and masterfully weaved them together with his mesmerizing music including songs from the 2010 album Le Noise and powerful renditions of classics including Ohio, Hey Hey My My, I Believe in You, and previously unreleased songs Leia and You Never Call. Through the tunes and the tales, Demme portrays a personal, retrospective look into the heart and soul of the artist. In Neil Young Journeys, Young's intense performances are presented in full, along with passages from the funny and sometimes wistful ride into town.

In partnership with Squamish First Nation Chief Ian Campbell, Robert Buckley has creatively re-imagined this haunting melody for full concert band. Journey features an underlying rhythmic pulse over which the melody evolves in a variety of moods and textures. The end result is quite dramatic and offers a rare glimpse of an ancient culture. Composed by Bruce W. Tippette, Drifting?utilizes musical passages to allude to the image of something drifting down a river in the woods. It journeys through twists and turns, placid streams and roaring rapids, eventually making a grand entrance into open waters. The musical passages in this piece for string orchestra conjure images of something, perhaps a leaf, gently drifting down a river in the woods. It journeys through twists and turns, placid streams and roaring rapids, eventually making a grand entrance into open waters. As Drifting opens, soft pizzicato strings are uttered in the lower string voices, while the upper voices slowly swell into the appearance of the main motive in m. 9. This theme develops and passes through several voices until being replaced by a new motive in m. 36, accompanied by driving rhythms and frequent modulations. A powerful resurgence of the original motive occurs in m. 60. Melodic remnants of the previous sections are presented in a new fashion as the piece comes to a dramatic close with all voices playing in rhythmic unison in the closing measures..The musical passages in this piece for string orchestra conjure images of something, perhaps a leaf, gently drifting down a river in the woods. An Ankh is an ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic representing the word Life. The Ankh of Eternity depicts an epic journey through ancient lands to find the mythical Ankh of Eternity amulet promising eternal life. The piece journeys through the desert in a caravan, with a stop for a Kaff celebration, an Arabic hand-clapping folk art. The discovery of the tomb is spine chilling and eerie with special percussion effects. After the Ankh is discovered, swarms of locusts descend and our travelers run for their lives. They may have found eternal life, but will they be forever cursed? The Ankh of Eternity uses an Arabic or double harmonic-major scale. Performers have multiple soloing and improvising opportunities. Complex but repeating rhythms offer players a chance to practice getting in the groove. Players and audiences alike will be invigorated by the many celebratory moments and thrilled at the eerie and downright scary moments! The Ankh of Eternity offers cultural and historical inclusion opportunities, improvisation, unique scales, rhythmic challenges, and a thrilling story. Conductor Notes: Measures 45-61: Kaff is the ancient Arabic art of hand clapping over improvised poetry. The Kaff Celebration section represents this art form. The improvising soloists should be designated by the conductor and should each be four measures long . Alternatively, soloists may copy the phrase in the second ending as a solo. The AYE! should be shouted joyously. The repeat may be omitted for performance time concerns, or, of course, repeated multiple times for more solos. Measures 64-73: Experiment with different cymbal noises, such as scrapes with a nail or coin, taps with triangle beaters, bowed cymbals, etc. Water-cymbal techniques should also be used. Fill a storage tub with water, and with the suspended cymbal still on the stand, hit the cymbal a couple times with a soft mallet, and lower the cymbal into the water for a glissando effect. The overall effect should be creepy cave-like echoes bending around corners. An Ankh is an ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic representing the word Life. The Ankh of Eternity depicts an epic journey through ancient lands to find the mythical Ankh of Eternity amulet promising eternal life. Illuminating Journey is composed to celebrate Maestro Carl St. Clair's 25th Anniversary season with Pacific Symphony. Maestro St. Clair is one of the few conductors who has dedicated his time to new music and support for living composers. I first encountered Maestro St. Clair in 2004 when I was one of the finalists for the Young Composers Competition. After I won that competition, I had an opportunity to work with Maestro St. Clair on the piece that he commissioned for the Pacific Symphony in 2005. That's the beginning of the journey of our friendship. Illuminating Journey is inspired by Maestro St. Clair's personality and the music he loved. The piece is mainly based on the pitch material from Maestro St. Clair's name CARL which can be translated as C = C, A = A, R = Re, and L = La. That pitch material already has the character of Illuminating sound for the open 5th and octave. The piece also incorporates some musical references that have some meaning for Maestro St. Clair, such as the hopefulness of the melodic intervals from West Side Story, There's a Place for Us, composed by Leonard Bernstein, who was also Maestro St. Clair's mentor. Illuminating Journey starts with the rhythmic motion of the pitch C and moves on to create a set of pitches. The note C functions as a center for the endless energy of this piece and creates a triumphant ending. I would personally like to thank Maestro St. Clair for his dedication on my music and his friendship throughout the past 10 years. The work with Maestro St. Clair and the Pacific Symphony was an early step in my career as a composer. I often mentioned that I may not be able to come this far without that part of my life. Thank you very much, Maestro St. Clair and the Pacific Symphony. Let's celebrate our Illuminating Journey together.

Contemporary Classical meets Jazz Grooves.Theremin's Journey is quite different. True, there is a piano - which plays bluesy, filmic, generally quite unmemorable music - but add in the theremin and pre-recorded electronics and the listener is off on a bizarre jazz meets sci-fi meets film-pop journey. The high-pitched spooky whine of the theremin is unmistakable, and unforgettable in small doses, as here; the work was in fact commissioned by Joanne Pearce Martin, who plays both theremin and piano. This track actually carries a 'health' warning on the cover: Crackles are part of the electronic track and are intentional: the CD is not defective! As it happens, the crackling is not particularly noticeable, and in general the electronics are atmospheric and additive in combination with the theremin. Especially the first and last two or three minutes of the 'journey' are really quite fascinating musically. (musicweb-international.com, May 2011) // Theremin's Journey places that curiously otherworldly instrument and piano in cheeky avant-garde tandem with electronic sonorities...(GRAMOPHONE, August 2011).

Provocative modal shifts and fresh melodic excursions take us to another land. The brooding minor key opening leads by stages to a big uplifting finish. There is also lots of contrast built into the orchestration, making Latin Journey a special treat for band and audience alike. Cross-cultural lessons are a natural fit with this one! Additionally, there is lots of opportunity to work on the finer points of balance and blend.Inventive!

The Unknown Journey was commissioned by Kwansei Gakuin University Symphony Band which was established in 1954 and has grown to become one of the top college bands in Japan. The composer chose the title as the piece seemed to create its ownmomentum as it developed, starting slowly and continuously increasing the tempo. Towards the end it gradually transmogrifies into the closing bars of Ravel’s La Valse, a piece which perfectly characterises the idea of unstoppable momentum.
