The collection of the main solo songs by Armas Jarnefelt was accelerated by a donation made by his son, Arvi, in Stockholm to the University of Helsinki: dozens of previously unpublished manuscripts thus found their way home to Finland. Sweden was father Jarnefelt's second home, since he spent a couple of decades as conductor of the Royal Opera in Stockholm. He concentrated almost exclusively on solo songs, the reason no doubt being that his father-in-law was Jean Sibelius, a master of large-scale form. Jarnefelt's vocal lyrics spring from the National-Romantic ethos nurtured on the archaic rune-singing of the national epic, the Kalevala, and the distant lands of Karelia. The folk-like elements of his youthful songs were in time joined by Impressionistic and in places even Expressionistic timbres. This collection is edited by Matti Tuloisela. Le 11 mars 2011, un violent séisme de magnitude 9.0 s’est produit près de la côte nord-est du Japon.
J’écris cette note de programme tout juste une semaine après la terrible catastrophe, et le nombre de morts causé par le tremblement de terre et le tsunami provoqué par ce dernier, s’élève déj plus de 6000 personnes, tout en sachant que des milliers d’autres sont toujours portées disparues.
J’ai beaucoup d’amis dans le milieu des Orchestres Vent au Japon et l’un d’entre eux, Yutaka Nishida, m’a suggéré d’écrire une œuvre destinée collecter des fonds pour venir en aide aux personnes affectées par ce cataclysme. Ayant étéimmédiatement séduit par sa proposition, j’ai écrit un arrangement pour Orchestre d’Harmonie de la pièce Cantilena (une œuvre pour Brass Band récemment commandée par le Grenland International Brass Festival, en Norvège), et lui ai donné un nouveau titre en hommage mes amis du Pays du Soleil Levant : The Sun Will Rise Again (Le soleil se lèvera nouveau).
Je reverserai l’intégralité des droits d’auteur de ce morceau au fonds de secours de la Croix-Rouge japonaise. En outre, je suis ravi d’annoncer que mon distributeur De Haske, qui a généreusement décidé de donner tous les bénéfices nets sur les ventes de cette œuvre, s’est engagé effectuer immédiatement un versement substantiel la Croix-Rouge afin que le Japon puisse profiter sans délai de l’aide modeste générée par ce projet.

Tuttavia il concetto di Umanesimo civile rimane storiograficamente rilevante, confermando l’insistenza di Hans Baron sulla peculiarità dell’esperienza fiorentina, se si limita a riassumere la convergenza tra la rivoluzione culturale e l’elaborazione politica di una specifica vicenda cittadina, protagonista il ceto che in risposta alla rivolta dei Ciompi diede vita alla repubblica oligarchica, a sua volta infine esautorato dall’egemonia medicea. Un primo risultato di questa constatazione è una più incisiva inclusione del movimento artistico nella dimensione dell’Umanesimo civile, non in un ruolo collaterale e subalterno rispetto ai letterati, ma in quello di protagonista, di inoltrato avamposto di una nuova forma mentis, di una aurorale nuova coscienza filosofica e scientifica: un risultato che mette in discussione anche tradizionali convinzioni sulla radicale inettitudine dell’Umanesimo alla scienza. Secondo, cospicuo esito di una più puntuale definizione sociologica, la nozione proposta da Baron e dalla sua scuola non esaurisce con la caduta della repubblica oligarchica la sua pertinenza alle convinzioni e ai comportamenti del patriziato, il quale in effetti continuò largamente e a lungo a coltivare l’immagine di sé creata dall’Umanesimo civile, sebbene ormai non come orgogliosa affermazione del proprio potere, ma come difesa della propria identità sociale e di residue prerogative politiche. In realtà, assai più che non risulti ad una omogeneizzante «storiografia della decadenza», un inconciliabile conflitto di culture percorre il Rinascimento fiorentino in tutta la sua durata, investendo gli orientamenti filosofici, le concezioni artistiche e letterarie, intrecciandosi con le convulsioni politiche della città e con la tragedia della restaurazione confessionale. È appunto in tale intreccio che si possono cogliere, sino a fine Cinquecento, le ultime risonanze dell’Umanesimo civile. È sembrato importante richiamare l’attenzione da questo punto di vista su personaggi, circostanze ed episodi storiograficamente noti per altri versi: sul magistero intellettuale di Piero Vettori, nella politica culturale del principato mediceo rimasto un corpo estraneo, una testimonianza di valori della tradizione fiorentina mortificati dall’assolutismo e dall’omologazione confessionale; su un aristotelismo umanistico e laico chiamato a fronteggiare il neoplatonismo di regime e a fecondare in termini ideologicamente non neutrali i dibattiti sulla Poetica e sulla teoria musicale; sull’Accademia degli Alterati, luogo di culto di memorie repubblicane e, in qualche momento, sospettabile punto di incontro del dissenso politico. SEVEN DAYS is a cycle for solo piano in 21 movements, most lasting between three and seven minutes, distributed in the form of a custom app produced by the 92Y and released during their Fall 2021 season. Using the app on their phones, listeners are asked to listen to three movements a day according to an approximate schedule - one movement in the morning, one in the afternoon, and another sometime in the evening - for seven days. The music is performed by Pedja Muzijevic and presented alongside paintings by Gloria Maximo. (Please visit 92Y.org for information on how to download the Seven Days app.) The work is designed as a listening experience that tunes us into the passing of time, connecting us both to the present moment as well as the cycle of the week. The experience invites music to inhabit and structure our everyday - to find us where we are in the world. The morning-afternoonevening schedule is meant to focus participants on the dawn-to-dusk cycle as well as to create a communal listening ritual. It is also an experiment in large-scale form, designed to draw attention to musical material developing across a week-long expanse, interspersed with vast silences. SEVEN DAYS was shaped by a year spent in relative isolation due to the pandemic. While it is a work composed during a time of quarantine, it will be experienced first by an audience in the process of returning to a more normal world. In that sense, it is an artwork born out of a year of relatively cloistered existence that seeks to preserve aspects of that experience as we move forward. The piece was also inspired by the work of Morton Feldman and Chantal Akerman, whose large-scale works consider time, process, and stillness. Their art struck me with a fresh relevance during the silent stretches of the pandemic year 2020. It was also a year in which writings about time, penned by contemplatives like Henry David Thoreau and Thomas Merton, held new weight. All of this in turnresonated with Gloria Maximo's profound paintings, which I've long admired. SEVEN DAYS is an artwork we are invited to do - using music to point our attention to the present moment, the everyday, and the seemingly mundane. It is a piece listeners are also asked to live within as it unfolds over a week rather than to witness it live. The Way to Heaven opens with fluttering woodwind figures and brass fanfares, which build to a climax before a change of key introduces a short quotation for the Polish National Anthem - Mazurek Dbrowskiego. This fades and you can hear thesignal to scramble and the throaty sounds of the squadron’s Merlin engines bursting into life before they line up to take off. This leads to the main thematic material of the work, which depicts the heaven-bound flight of 303 Squadron as it climbs tointercept the incoming Messerschmitt 109s. A brief allusion to the Polish national anthem brings the piece to a triumphant close.
