For the first time this work ascribed earlier to Joseph Haydn will be edited here under the name of his brother, Johann Michael Haydn, and based on the most reliable source from 1765 from the Benedictine monastery Göttwieg. There, in the course of a century the work was heard forty times for opening of the solemn High Mass, as also in 1809 on the name day of Emperor Napoleon, who spent a short time at the monastery following the battle of Aspern and Eßling. According to late baroque custom, the scoring consists of a soprano, alto, tenor, bass [each soli and tutti], two violins, two trumpets with timpani [ad libitum, corresponding to the purpose of the particular performance] and basso continuo. / Date parution : 2019-12-12/ Répertoire / Chant et Piano

Great significance is attached to the Marian antiphons along with the cult of the veneration of the Virgin Mary. This two volume edition contains Latin settings of Marian antiphons from the 18th to the 20th century. The first volume already published contains settings of the Marian antiphon Salve Regina whilst the second volume contains the three other Marian antiphons and the Marian hymn Ave maris stella.These two volumes contain an anthology of works by Johann Michael Haydn Bruckner Gounod Dvorák Elgar Grieg Liszt Mendelssohn a.o. which have been arranged for medium voice and organ without compromising any of the originality of the pieces.

This work possibly commissioned by Prince-Bishop Sigismund Christoph von Schrattenbach was assigned to three Salzburg composers: W. A. Mozart (part 1) Michael Haydn (part 2) and Anton Cajetan Adlgasser (part 3). Only the manuscript of part 1 has survived. Here Mozart drew heavily on the Salzburg tradition of church music and school dramas perhaps taking Johann Ernst Eberlin and even his father Leopold as his models. The first performance took place in the Knights’ Hall of the prince’s palace on 12 March 1767. The libretto was supplied by Ignaz Anton Weiser (1701 1785) town councillor and mayor of Salzburg. Mozart wrote out many of theappoggiaturas in this early work thereby providing a useful guide to the vocal practices of his day. Aria No.2 has come down to us with an instructive passage in which the Vocal part is ornamented in the hand of Leopold Mozart.
