Johann Stamitz is considered the founding father of the Mannheim school of musical innovation. His two sons Carl and Anton were important members of the group as well. He was instrumental in setting the four-movement symphonic structure and the sonata form.Concertmaster of the Orchestra in Mannheim Stamitz wrote more than fifty symphonies and many other works. This work has been credited to Stamitz though he wrote little for the Trumpet and the title page of the work bears no signature. Some scholars believe the work to be that of Johann Georg Holzbogen. It has been recorded however as Concerto in D for Trumpet and the missing parts have been reconstructed bycomposer and arranger Alan Boustead.The style of the work falls in the time between our later delineations of the Baroque and Classical eras and the writing is typical energetic with quite an exciting solo part for the Trumpet.

The composer and violin virtuoso Johann Stamitz not only established the world-famous Mannheim school in the 18th century but is known among clarinettists above all for presumably being the first to present them with a true solo concerto. Even though Stamitz left it at just this one concerto, it has enjoyed great popularity since its rediscovery in the 20th century and has become a standard work in the concert repertoire. Due to its moderate technical demands, it is ideally suited for music students as a ?first? solo concerto, and as preparation for the more demanding solo parts of Mozart, Weber and Spohr. The newly prepared piano reduction was undertaken with a view to make it easy to play so that also less experienced piano players can undertake the accompaniment of the soloist; a renowned clarinettist, editor Nicolai Pfeffer also contributes suggestions for the cadenzas ? the result is an ideal Urtext edition for student recitals and music schools.

Beschreibung Dieses dreisätzige Trio von Carl Friedrich Abel oder Johann Stamitz gab es bisher nur in der Fassung für Flöte, Flöte/Violine und Bass. In der Ledenburg-Sammlung ist dieses Werk ebenfalls in Teilen enthalten, jedoch wird hier die erste Stimme eine Oktave tiefer der Viola da Gamba übertragen. Das Stück ist eine willkommene Bereicherung des frühklassischen Repertoires für Trios mit Viola da Gamba und Flöte/Violine. Das Trio erscheint mit dieser Edition in dieser Form zum ersten Mal. Die Ledenburg-Sammlung in Osnabrück wurde erst 2015 entdeckt. Sie enthält im wesentlichen Gambenmusik aus der Zeit um 1750. Die wichtigsten Werke der Sammlung sind die verschollen geglaubten zwölf Fantasien für Viola da Gamba solo von Georg Philipp Telemann.
