Volume 6: Voice: Vocal
Album Low voice [Sheet music] Barenreiter
Tiefe Stimme / Low Voice-Continuing the new Urtext edition of Schubert?s Lieder ...(+)
Tiefe Stimme / Low Voice-Continuing the new Urtext edition of Schubert?s Lieder editor Walther Dürr now presents Volume 6 for Low Voice. While volumes 1 to 4 of this series contain mostly Lieder that Schubert had published during his lifetime volume 5ff. contain the remaining songs which are presented basically chronologically in the order of their Deutsch catalogue number. The Lieder in this sixth volume were composed during the period between autumn 1814 and spring 1815. With ?Nachtgesang? (D 119) and ?Trost in Tränen? (D120) Schubert turns to the?Strophenlied? in its stricter sense for the first time. He develops an interest in this form parallel to his first involvement with Geothe. Schubert during this period an assistant teacher at his father?s school orientated himself towards the so-called ?Berliner Liederschule? particularly the songs of Johann Friedrich Reichardt. By the beginning of the year 1815 he drew his inspiration mainly from the texts of Theodor Körner; however he regularly still produced settings for the poetry of Goethe and Schiller.- Based on the Urtext of the ?New Schubert Edition?- Newly engraved clearly presented musical layout- Foreword by Walther Dürr on the history and genesis of the work as well as an explanation of the sources for each individual lied (Eng/Ger)- Includes English translations of lieder texts by Richard Wigmore

Mittlere Stimme / Medium Voice-As a continuation of the new Urtext edition of the Schubert lieder Walther Dürr has now edited volume five for high medium and low voices. Volumes 1 to 4 of this edition contain mainly lieder which Schubert himself saw into print (in his own choice and order) and in the fourth volume works from the last two years of his life are included. The lieder in volume 5 onwards are strictly presented in the order of Deutsch's Thematic Catalogue which means that in principle they are arranged chronologically. The lieder in volume five were composed in the years 1811 to 1814. The first 'Hagars Klage' (D 5) dated 30 March 1811 is also his first complete surviving song. Thefirst eleven lieder are evidence of his early studies (1811 1813/14). During this period Schubert immersed himself in Johann Rudolf Zumsteeg's ballads and lieder and wrote Italian arias during his composition lessons with Antonio Salieri. He also composed a single strophic song ('Klaglied' D 23) which the only one of these songs was published shortly after his death in November 1830 as op. 131 3. His apprentice work as it were was the major ballade 'Der Taucher' (D 77) which was composed between 1813 and roughly the beginning of 1815. Probably not by chance his first complete opera ('Des Teufels Lustschloss' D 84) was written at the same time. He also set fourteen poems by Friedrich von Matthisson exploring the principle of the strophic lied.- Excellent new engraving based on the 'New Schubert Edition'- Foreword by Walther Dürr discussing the history the works? compositionand transmission together with a list of sources for each song (Ger/Eng)- English translation of the song texts by Richard WigmoreContents:Hagars Klage D 5 / Leichenfantasie D 7 /Der Vatermörder D 10 / Klaglied op. post. 131 3 D 23 / Misero pargoletto D 42 (high voice only) / Totengräberlied D 44 / Die Schatten D 50 / Verklärung D 59 / Pensa che questo istante D 76 (medium and low voice only) /Der Taucher D 77 / Son fra l?onde D 78 (high voice only) /Adelaide D 95 / Trost. Romantische Opera in three acts-Alfonso und Estrella D 732Romatic Opera in 3 ActsIn late September or early October 1821 Schubert and his close friend Franz von Schober vacationed in the countryside of Lower Austria. Their first stopover was at Ochsenburg Castle which belonged to the Bishop of St. Pölten (a close relative of Schober?s) after which they moved on to St. Pölten itself. Roughly a year earlier two stage works by Schubert had been performed in Vienna: the one-act singspiel Die Zwillingsbrüder and the melodrama Die Zauberharfe. The librettos were both written by the seasoned Viennese playwright Georg von Hofmann who blamed the press for the indifferent reception the two works weregiven by the audience. Schubert and Schober now decided it would seem to write a grand romantic opera uninfluenced by the workaday world of the theatre and beholden solely to their own ideas of what an opera should be.Not until 24 June 1854 was the opera finally performed in Weimar under the baton of Franz Liszt. It only achieved success however in an arrangement by Johann Nepomuk Fuchs that was staged on many German and Austrian stages in 1881 2 allegedly with 'brilliant acclaim'.Urtext of the New Schubert EditionFull score (BA5540) and vocal score (BA5540-90) available for salePerformance material (BA5540-72) available for hire

Schubert?s dance pieces are truly functional music for everyday use. As far as the development of the genre isconcerned they are immediateprecursors of the Viennese waltzes of Joseph Lanner and Johann Strauß the Elder. Schubert never danced despite his otherwise genial and sociable nature but he was a quite indefatigable improviser of dance music only too happy to play for his friends. The best of these ad hoc melodies now form a rich collection of waltzes ?Deutscher? (German dances) and Ländler (country dances).
