$73.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

Chamber Music oboe SKU: PR.114422520 Sonata for Oboe and Piano. Co...(+)
Chamber Music oboe SKU: PR.114422520 Sonata for Oboe and Piano. Composed by Katherine Needleman. Set of Score and Parts. 24+8 pages. Duration 15:45. Theodore Presser Company #114-42252. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.114422520). ISBN 9781491134788. UPC: 680160683833. After decades as a renowned oboe virtuoso, Katherine Needleman was improvising at the piano during the quarantine summer of 2020 when her ideas congealed in a powerful way. Within a week she completed a 16-minute oboe sonata inspired by the world’s overlapping crises. This riveting three-movement sonata bears the title qua resurget ex favilla, drawn from the Dies Irae text referring to rising back from ashes. Needleman won the International Double Reed Society’s Inaugural Commissioning Competition by entering her own recording of this work, performing as both oboist and pianist from her living room. As a result, IDRS commissioned her to compose a new work for English horn and piano which was premiered at their 2021 Virtual Symposium and programmed for the live 2022 convention. I’m not exactly sure how, in a life consumed by music, I never put anything on paper between the time I stopped at age 10 and the age of 42. I mean, I have some ideas why, but that could easily dissolve into a feminist manifesto or a condemnation of my musical education and the overwhelming culture of American oboe playing, the vehicle through which I’ve made a living my entire adult life. Rather than go there, I will just say this is the first piece I put on paper in my adult life.Six months into COVID-19 lockdown in the US, the world was feeling pretty weird. I had familiarized myself with the music notation program, Sibelius, for recent arranging projects. I had written some mockeries of A.M.R. Barret oboe etudes in response to an assignment I was given (and did appropriately first). When I descended into a dark chorale in the middle of the fourth mockery, I realized I needed a new vehicle. I wrote a short, ridiculous piece for my husband’s birthday, and then, the next night, when improvising at the piano, like I’ve done since I was seven years old, this piece came to me. However, this time, I sketched it out into Sibelius. Over the course of the next week, I found notating and picking permanent, official notes to enter into the computer challenging. But it was all done on paper in seven days, and I took another few for dynamics and articulations thinking they might be useful for someone else, if I would ever be lucky enough for someone else to play it.I don’t have much to say about the music of qua resurget ex favilla itself. It’s a personal statement couched in the feelings of that time. The US presidential election was looming large and ugly in my mind, well, that and the end of life as we knew it, but I also had some bizarre feeling that everything would be okay. $24.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

$62.00 - See more - Buy online

Already a popular recital work for piccolo and piano, and winner of the 2009 International Piccolo Symposium biennial composition competition, Flash! is now available for solo piccolo with band accompaniment - fresh from the NFA premiere, featuring piccolo legend Walfrid Kujala. The East Coast premiere is scheduled for 11/18/10, featuring Boston Symphony piccoloist Linda Toote with the Boston University wind ensemble. By 2008, Sonatine de Giverny was being performed so frequently that I decided to write another piccolo piece as soon as an opportunity arose. Since Giverny is a study in French style, I knew the new piece must be in my own authentic American voice. That summer, Giverny was performed six times at the NFA convention as a mandatory competition piece, and I returned from the August 2008 convention all charged up to write something different for piccolo. In September, Kate Prestia-Schaub wrote to tell me about the International Piccolo Symposium's new composer competition. She proposed that if I write a new piccolo/piano piece, she would record a demo for me to submit to the competition, and she would submit applications to perform it at the 2009 IPS convention and NFA convention. What amazing timing! I set out to compose a flashy showpiece with a jazzy snap, lots of idiomatic scales and arpeggios, and a scary middle section, and by mid-October FLASH! was complete. Kate followed suit and all 3 wishes came true - FLASH! won first prize in the IPS composer competition, and she performed it both there and at NFA. In the meantime many other piccoloists have added the work to their repertoire, Cynthia Ellis wrote an article about it for Flute Talk magazine, and Walfrid Kujala commissioned a band accompaniment to premiere at NFA in 2010. More recently, Sarah Jackson has commissioned an orchestra version, premiered at the 2014 NFA convention. Chamber Music Piano, soprano Saxophone SKU: PR.114419290 Composed by Chen Yi. Edited by Chen Yi. Arranged by Wong Tak Chiu. Sws. Score and parts. 44 pages. Duration 20 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #114-41929. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.114419290). ISBN 9781491135235. UPC: 680160676118. 9 x 12 inches. Supported by a major commissioning award from the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation in the Library of Congress, my Chinese Folk Dance Suite is written for violin solo and orchestra, and premiered by The Women's Philharmonic with violin soloist Terrie Baune, conducted by Apo Hsu, on March 10, 2001, at Yerba Buena Center For the Arts Theater in San Francisco. Inspired by various Chinese traditional folk dances, I've composed three movements in the suite: 1) Lion Dance. Traditionally, people dance with richly decorated hand made lions, accompanied by percussion ensemble, to celebrate happy occasions and major festivals throughout the country. In the composition, I use Chinese drum and other percussion instruments in the background, to form a dynamic and rhythmic texture responding to the solo part, which imitates the tunes played on the suona (traditional Chinese trumpet). The pitch materials came from traditional Guangdong Music tune and Chaozhou Music tune ; 2) YangKo. Originated in northern China, it's a major folk dance form in mass performance popularized in the country. In YangKo performance, people always play rhythmic patterns on the drums hung around their waists while singing and dancing. In my second movement, I have imagined a warm scene of YangKo dancing in distance. The solo violin plays a sweet and gracious melodic line while all members in the orchestra sing the non-pitch syllables in different layers as the soft background, to imitate the percussion sound which produces the ever going pulse. 3) Muqam. It is a large scale traditional music and dance form from Uygur nationality in Xinjiang province, originated in the 15th century. In my third movement, I keep the meter of seven eight and the melodic style of Muqam music. The fiery dancing gesture cumulates the sustained climax section at the end of the work, after a colorful violin cadenza in both improvisational singing style and polyphonic writing with woven lines. Scored for 2 flutes (2nd doubling piccolo), 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in Bb, 2 bassoons, 4 French horns in F, 2 trumpets in Bb, 3 trombones, percussion 1 (3 congas, low tom-tom, temple block, paddle castanets), percussion 2 (snare drum, 6 small Beijing opera gong, 12 big Beijing opera gong, crotales, tambourine), percussion 3 (suspended cymbal, a pair of 6 Chinese cymbals, bass drum), solo violin, violins I, violins II, violas, cellos and double basses. Duration is about 16 minutes. The work is recorded on Bis [CD-1352] and released in 2003, performed by Cho-Liang Lin and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, cond. by Lan Shui. Reduction for B-flat soprano saxophone and piano by Wong Tak Chiu (2017) and edited by Chen Yi (2018) The second movement YangKo is premiered by Dr. Wong and Korak Lerpibulchai at the Singapore Saxophone Symposium on 8/13/2017. The American premiere of the saxophone and piano reduction version of Chinese Folk Dance Suite is given by Chi Him Chik and Hao Yin at the Society for American Music National Conference in Kansas City, MO on 3/2/2018. $26.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

More recently, Sarah Jackson has commissioned an orchestra version, premiered at the 2014 NFA convention. I set out to compose a flashy showpiece with a jazzy snap, lots of idiomatic scales and arpeggios, and a scary middle section, and by mid-October FLASH! was complete.Kate followed suit and all 3 wishes came true - FLASH! won first prize in the IPS composer competition, and she performed it both there and at NFA. In the meantime many other piccoloists have added the work to their repertoire, Cynthia Ellis wrote an article about it for Flute Talk magazine, and Walfrid Kujala commissioned a band accompaniment to premiere at NFA in 2010.More recently, Sarah Jackson has commissioned an orchestra version, premiered at the 2014 NFA convention. $37.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

(BR) SKU: HL.49032560 Composed by Keyboard. Edited by Klaus Doege and Peter Jost. This edition: Paperback/Soft Cover. Book. Edition Schott. 270 pages. Schott Music #ED 8240. Published by Schott Music (HL.49032560). ISBN 9783795718695. German - English. $29.99 - See more - Buy online

The symposium brought together 110 participants from 23 nations and six continents to learn of each other’s work, establish collaborations and professional networks, and shape new directions for research in this important area of music education in Birmingham, England, from April 18-21, 2017. The two keynote addresses and 35 papers published in this volume document music assessment practice and the measurement and evaluation of music learning across the world in local, state, and national contexts at all levels. The attendees also attended special work sessions to discuss the International Principles for Assessment in Music Education (developed and introduced by the co-chairs at this symposium), and their discussions are summarized in this collection. As music educators across the world come to terms with increased expectations for accountability of learning in music, the scholars and practitioners who have contributed to this volume provide insight to guide their work. Timothy S. Brophy is Professor of Music Education and Director of Institutional Assessment at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida.
