L’Istituto Storico Austriaco a Roma, in collaborazione con la Sezione di Storia della Musica dell’Istituto Storico Germanico a Roma, il Comitato Scientifico degli Opera omnia di Muzio Clementi e il Da Ponte-Institut für Librettologie, Don Juan-Forschung und Sammlungsgeschichte di Vienna, ha organizzato dal 4 al 6 dicembre 2002 un symposium internazionale di studi dal titolo Muzio Clementi. Cosmopolita della musica, che ha inteso riunire nella città natale dell’autore i maggiori esperti di Clementi in occasione del 250° anniversario della nascita del compositore.
I numerosi interventi del symposium si sono articolati in complessive 4 sezioni (Muzio Clementi nel 250^o anniversario della nascita; Clementi: un romano a Londra; L’altro Clementi; Clementi e la «Wiener Klassik»), svoltesi presso la sede dell’Istituto Storico Austriaco (5 e 6 dicembre).
La manifestazione ha messo in luce soprattutto la dimensione europea degli interscambi culturali dovuti al fenomeno delle migrazioni dei musicisti, dei rapporti internazionali inerenti all’editoria, all’impresariato e al commercio degli strumenti a tastiera.

Das vom Paul-Hindemith-Institut, der Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst und dem Institut fur hermeneutische Sozialforschung in Frankfurt/Main veranstaltete Symposium hat sich einerseits einer Bestandsaufnahme des Verhaltnisses von Philologie und Biographik anhand spezieller Forschungsbereiche (u.a. zu Liszt, Strauss, Mahler, Schonberg, Strawinsky, Hindemith, Messiaen und Stockhausen) gewidmet, andererseits aber auch versucht, allgemein den derzeitigen Stand der Diskussion zum Autonomiestatus von Musik als emphatischer Kunst zu betrachten und auf mogliche aktuelle Konsequenzen zu untersuchen.

Already a popular recital work for piccolo and piano, and winner of the 2009 International Piccolo Symposium biennial composition competition, Flash! is now available for solo piccolo with band accompaniment - fresh from the NFA premiere, featuring piccolo legend Walfrid Kujala. The East Coast premiere is scheduled for 11/18/10, featuring Boston Symphony piccoloist Linda Toote with the Boston University wind ensemble.
By 2008, Sonatine de Giverny was being performed so frequently that I decided to write another piccolo piece as soon as an opportunity arose. Since Giverny is a study in French style, I knew the new piece must be in my own authentic American voice. That summer, Giverny was performed six times at the NFA convention as a mandatory competition piece, and I returned from the August 2008 convention all charged up to write something different for piccolo. In September, Kate Prestia-Schaub wrote to tell me about the International Piccolo Symposium's new composer competition. She proposed that if I write a new piccolo/piano piece, she would record a demo for me to submit to the competition, and she would submit applications to perform it at the 2009 IPS convention and NFA convention. What amazing timing! I set out to compose a flashy showpiece with a jazzy snap, lots of idiomatic scales and arpeggios, and a scary middle section, and by mid-October FLASH! was complete. Kate followed suit and all 3 wishes came true - FLASH! won first prize in the IPS composer competition, and she performed it both there and at NFA. In the meantime many other piccoloists have added the work to their repertoire, Cynthia Ellis wrote an article about it for Flute Talk magazine, and Walfrid Kujala commissioned a band accompaniment to premiere at NFA in 2010. More recently, Sarah Jackson has commissioned an orchestra version, premiered at the 2014 NFA convention.

Supported by a major commissioning award from the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation in the Library of Congress, my Chinese Folk Dance Suite is written for violin solo and orchestra, and premiered by The Women's Philharmonic with violin soloist Terrie Baune, conducted by Apo Hsu, on March 10, 2001, at Yerba Buena Center For the Arts Theater in San Francisco. Inspired by various Chinese traditional folk dances, I've composed three movements in the suite: 1) Lion Dance. Traditionally, people dance with richly decorated hand made lions, accompanied by percussion ensemble, to celebrate happy occasions and major festivals throughout the country. In the composition, I use Chinese drum and other percussion instruments in the background, to form a dynamic and rhythmic texture responding to the solo part, which imitates the tunes played on the suona (traditional Chinese trumpet). The pitch materials came from traditional Guangdong Music tune and Chaozhou Music tune ; 2) YangKo. Originated in northern China, it's a major folk dance form in mass performance popularized in the country. In YangKo performance, people always play rhythmic patterns on the drums hung around their waists while singing and dancing. In my second movement, I have imagined a warm scene of YangKo dancing in distance. The solo violin plays a sweet and gracious melodic line while all members in the orchestra sing the non-pitch syllables in different layers as the soft background, to imitate the percussion sound which produces the ever going pulse. 3) Muqam. It is a large scale traditional music and dance form from Uygur nationality in Xinjiang province, originated in the 15th century. In my third movement, I keep the meter of seven eight and the melodic style of Muqam music. The fiery dancing gesture cumulates the sustained climax section at the end of the work, after a colorful violin cadenza in both improvisational singing style and polyphonic writing with woven lines. Scored for 2 flutes (2nd doubling piccolo), 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in Bb, 2 bassoons, 4 French horns in F, 2 trumpets in Bb, 3 trombones, percussion 1 (3 congas, low tom-tom, temple block, paddle castanets), percussion 2 (snare drum, 6 small Beijing opera gong, 12 big Beijing opera gong, crotales, tambourine), percussion 3 (suspended cymbal, a pair of 6 Chinese cymbals, bass drum), solo violin, violins I, violins II, violas, cellos and double basses. Duration is about 16 minutes. The work is recorded on Bis [CD-1352] and released in 2003, performed by Cho-Liang Lin and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, cond. by Lan Shui. Reduction for B-flat soprano saxophone and piano by Wong Tak Chiu (2017) and edited by Chen Yi (2018) The second movement YangKo is premiered by Dr. Wong and Korak Lerpibulchai at the Singapore Saxophone Symposium on 8/13/2017. The American premiere of the saxophone and piano reduction version of Chinese Folk Dance Suite is given by Chi Him Chik and Hao Yin at the Society for American Music National Conference in Kansas City, MO on 3/2/2018.

Dass das erste wissenschaftliche Symposium im deutschsprachigen Raum zum Schaffen Antonin Dvoraks 1991 im Rahmen der 2. Musikfestspiele Saar in Saarbrucken, also abseits der grossen Metropolen in der musikalischen Provinz an einem Ort stattfand, der keine direkte Verbindung zu diesem Komponisten aufweist, mag insofern bezeichnend erscheinen, als fur die internationale Musikwissenschaft Dvorak lange Zeit ein eher abseitiges Thema darstellte. In den letzten Jahren ist das vermehrte Interesse auch ausserhalb seines tschechischen Heimatlandes, auf das die Dvorak-Forschung bis dahin weitgehend konzentriert war, unubersehbar geworden. Nach den Prager Kolloquien, dem Dvorak-Kongress in New Orleans und der grossen Jubilaums-Konferenz in Dobris bot Saarbrucken eine weitere Gelegenheit, eine Zwischenbilanz der neueren Forschungsergebnisse in Tschechien, Grossbritannien, den USA, aber eben auch Deutschland zu ziehen, die in diesem Sammelband zur Diskussion gestellt werden.

The same stream of life for mixed choir (SSAATTBB), lyrics by Bengali poet and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore, was commissioned by the conductor of the New Dublin Voices, Bernie Sherlock. The New Dublin Voices were awarded for the piece, from the Arts Council Ireland. The piece was premiered at the Unitarian Church on Sunday 11th September 2016 in Dublin. It was performed at leading festivals and competitions including the International Chamber Choir Competition in Marktoberdorf in June 2017, and the World Symposium on Choral Music in Barcelona (July 2017).
