Pelican Dance was composed in 2022 as part of my annual commitment to create a piece to be premiered by our University of Mobile High School Honor Band. I had a beginning concept for a “dance” piece and was leaning toward something which was a little quirky, fun and not too serious. One day, during my regular commute across Mobile Bay, I noticed the pelicans, elegant birds in the air and water but awkward on land. I tried to imagine a pelican dancing and decided I had my mascot and theme.The opening motif, played in octaves by the whole ensemble in the first measure, is fundamental for the entire work. It is stated in some form at the beginning of each section, is the basis for the first theme and is even used as the bass line later in the piece. It should be clearly stated each time it appears.Performance considerations: Although there are contrasting moments in the work, the tempo should never waiver. It should remain brisk and consistent from section to section.Dynamic contrast is an important aspect of the compositional design and stylistic makeup of the piece. The subito dynamics, fp, etc., need to be almost startling.Percussion drives the energy of this composition to a strong degree, and it is probably the most fun section in the band for this piece. Covering those parts effectively is critically important.

In honor of the 200th anniversary of St. Rose Philippine Duschene’s arrival in New Orleans, Michael Joncas was commissioned to write a new mass setting by the Religious of the Sacred Heart. This edition is scored for SATB voices and features instrumental parts for complete symphony orchestra. Parts may be used according to the players available in your circumstance.  The mass includes optional phrases in French and Potawatomi honoring the American saint’s heritage and ministry. The mass may be sung in unison, reserving the choral and instrumental parts for holy days. While some contemporary musical settings of the “Glory to God” seem burdensome and even awkward, Joncas’s melody is absolutely delightful. The singable through-composed Gloria boasts a magnificent and manageable modulation that contributes to the triumphant nature of the piece. Kay's second one-act opera was based on the book of the same title by Robert O. Blechman. His retelling of the famous medieval legend moved Kay to spend the best part of six months in creative output to produce a 50-minute opera. The Juggler of Our Lady was premiered in New Orleans by Xavier University Opera Workshop in 1962. The scoring calls for 15 voices with mixed chorus and orchestra.

This arrangement is inspired by the performance of 'The All Star Marching Band' where you also can hear a variation of Alphonse Picou's famous clarinet solo (from 1940). 1st Clarinet is grade 4. The solo, on the repetition, from measure 41, can be played by all the clarinets or as a solo.The Creoles spoke Spanish and French and lived in 'the high society' of the French district in New Orleans. In 1894, the segregation laws were in effect in New Orleans, which forced the upper class Creoles to live on the West Side with the poor, uneducated American blacks. The mixture of the two styles of music and cultures clashed, and created the start of Jazz.

Valley of Shadows is a concert-band work for young band that depicts the adventure of walking through an eerie forest. The piece calls for musicians to scream and clap as moments leading to the thrilling end depict an encounter with a snake in the valley (represented by a ratchet).A hard-acrylic mallet is preferred for the glockenspiel in this work. Additionally, the sleighbells or tambourine may be used interchangeably.
