LULLABY from The Unicorns (1967/82/86) 'The Lullaby from ‘The Unicorns’ arose from an opera libretto I commissioned from John Heath-Stubbs (1918-2006) in the late 1960s. In his story two unicorns are discovered in a remote part of Africa. Both the East and West want to obtain them for research so they send out rival expeditions. The Western technique is to lure the unicorn with a young girl singing a lullaby. Both East and West capture unicorns but the mythical animals escape in the end. I never completed the opera but I made a six movement suite from it called The Unicorns. There arethree songs and three instrumental numbers and the first performance was given with Elisabeth Söderström and Solna Brass under Lars-Gunnar Björklund at Ekensbergskyrkan Solna Sweden on 31 October 1982. This version was recorded (Albany TROY 760) and my arrangement of the three songs for voice and piano was recorded by Marilyn Hill Smith (Albany TROY365). The career of the Lullaby continued with a version for clarinet and piano which I premiered with Jack Brymer aboard the Sea Princess in the Mediterranean on 29 September 1986. The oboe version was for Sarah Francis and Duke Dobing and I have recorded it for flute and piano (Naxos 8.572287). Lullaby can be played with a variety of solo instruments and is also available for piano left hand and piano solo which I have recorded.' - Peter Dickinson

According to Ira Gershwin ' Lullaby ' was probably originally intended as a piano solo as he was in possession of an unfinished fragment of it. However it only became publically familiar when it emerged as a string quartet which George Gershwin had written sometime between 1919 and 1920. We do not know exactly when Gershwin composed the preceding piano version of Lullaby but the theme subsequently appears in 1922 as the heroine's love song in his opera 'Blue Monday'. Until the present edition arranged By Alicia Zizzo there was no existing score for piano solo.

George Shearing wrote 'Lullaby of Birdland' in 1952 for Morris Levy the owner of the New York jazz club Birdland. Levy had got in touch with Shearing and explained that he'd started a regular Birdland-sponsored disk jockey show and he wanted Shearing to record a theme which were 'to be played on the start of every new hour' Levy originally wanted his own music to be recorded but Shearing insisted he couldn't relate very well with it and wanted to compose his own music. They compromised by distributing the rights of the song: the composer's rights went to Shearing and the publishing rights went to Levy. Shearing stated in his autobiography that he had composed 'thewhole thing within ten minutes.' Jean Constantin composed the lyrics to a French version 'Lola ou La légende du pays aux oiseaux'. Musical characteristics 'Lullaby of Birdland' is in thirty-two bar form and its original key was F minor (or A major). This arrangement is lifted to G minor for the chords not to become too dissonant in the deeper voices. The song spends an equal amount of time in both minor and major modes. It follows a I ? vi ? ii7 ? V7 harmonic progression and it has a I ? viø7 ? iiø7 ? V7 minor variation.

Peter Sculthorpe's programme note reads as follows 'Lullaby is based upon one of the number of indigenous Australian melodies collected by Dr H.C. Lethbridge during the 1930s and is a lullaby for children victimised by war. It opens with several statements of indigenous melody the words lovingly entreating children to embrace sleep as night falls. This is followed by a short central section that questions the need for war its text taken from another song in the Lethbridge collection. The melody then returns leading to a quiet coda suggesting the calmness of sleep and for many children the beauteousness of Paradise.'The piece is set for unaccompanied mixedvoices.The Faber Choral Signature Series introduces a wealth of new or recently written choral music to choirs in search of fresh repertoire. He prepared himself for this by taking an intensive course in composition during which he wrote this brief ?Lullaby? for string quartet as an exercise probably in 1919. He liked its catchy melody so muchthat he later used it again in his one-act ?jazz opera? Blue Monday Blues. ?I find the piece charming and kind? wrote his brother Ira in 1968 when the quartet movement appeared in print for the first time.
