Andrea Gabrieli was a major force in moving the classical music world toward the more modern Venetian school of the Renaissance. Called by Alfred Einstein One of the greatest and most influential masters of the Renaissance period, Gabrieli fully developed the use of choirs of voices and instruments, often in opposition to each other. David has selected three examples from a posthumous 1589 collection, advising that the four-part pieces were originally scored for viols but are here arranged for modern instruments. And while the arrangement will accommodate a number of players per part, single players would be more historically correct. As important as Andrea was to the Venetian School, his fame would be eclipsed by his nephew and student, Giovanni Gabrieli.

For hardanger fiddle, either solo or accompanied by reed-organ and/or piano (live or pre-recorded) and instrumental quartet. The piece is a 'cut-up' of passages quoted from, or composed in imitation of, traditional hardanger fiddle repertoire. Some of the music is notated in detail and in full and some does not specify any particular order for the performance of the 'fragments' and leaves their ornamentation to the discretion of the player. There are two optional accompaniment-strands (either or both may be played if at all), consisting of slow-moving hymnody with a lot of gaps in he harmony.

Arranged for 3 to 5 octave handbell choir with optional 2 or 3 octaves of handchimes. Level 2+. This delicate setting of the tune NEUMARK is an excellent choice for any contemplative moment during worship. Flowing treble eighth notes underpin most of the piece while the melody peers through in the low treble. A verse set mostly on handchimes offers a break from the moving eighths, which return as the piece grows in strength. A final, triumphant set of chords bring the piece to a firm, confident conclusion.

He received his first musical instruction from his father, a curator by profession. Then, after moving to Prague and Berlin, he developed his knowledge of violin and viola playing, as well as of composition. In 1779 he entered the service of the Markgraf of Schwerin as a viola player. He lived in Dresden from 1788, where he died on 28 July 1837, at the age of 80. Tenderly flowing with devotion and worship, this stunning original delivers a classic text in a completely new way and brings depth and understanding to its message of grace and mercy. A conservative melody carries the words in the rich lower reaches of the tessitura with a cello-like loveliness. Moving chords impact the refrain and build intensity before giving way to the hopeful words, “In His arms, I have a place, by His matchless grace.” Superb!
