Imagining life in the ancient English lands of Mercia (600-900 AD), Martin wrote 12 scenes of what he believed life was like in the kingdom. Martin's twelve quintets were completed in the Spring of 2016 and have already been performed in their entirety. The numbering reflects the composer's suggested performance sequence, but individual quintets may, of course, be performed separately.

She/He is a solitary frog, looking for a boy/girl frog. She’s/He’s waiting for a date, Chances aren’t great, You hope they don’t get legless and arrive on a plate, So to while away the wait, in a voice that croaks her/his fate She/He sings of her/his dream tête à tête: I’m hoping for a ... The cantata Christ lag in Todes-Banden is a mixed chorale cantata that sets the first and last verses of the corresponding Luther chorale verbatim, but the other movements in free poetry based on the content of the chorale. The time of composition cannot be clearly determined, but at the end of the copy that serves as the basis for the edition, there is a date of January 1693. According to this, the composition was written before 1693 and thus well before Johann Kuhnau took up his post as Thomaskantor in Leipzig (1701). The use of two cornetti is also a parallel to the cantata Lobe den Herren, meine Seele(PB 32091), whose composition can be linked to Kuhnau's stay in Zittau. The two parts marked Cornett are only in the first two movements of the cantata; in the further course, a collaparte lead would be possible, but cannot be proven. In principle, according to the source, the two cornett parts can also be played by violins. The title page also notes the possibility of adding ripieno singers, i.e. a choir, in the non-soloistic movements. The cantata, according to its text intended for Easter, is very well suited for use in church services with its small size and flexible scoring.

It was only shortly after the 5th Symphony that Beethoven completed the Pastoral Symphony. The two formed a complementary work pair, consigned together to a patron in June 1808, publicly premiered in Vienna in December 1808, and published by Breitkopf & Hartel in the spring of 1809. During this period, Beethoven revised the symphony several times. Only in the course of preparing for publication did Beethoven send Breitkopf & Hartel a letter, together with a list of corrections, disclosing the title that he desired, Pastoral Symphony or recollections of country life. More an expression of feeling than painting. The Pastoral with its tone-painting elements gives evidence of Beethoven's closeness to nature, characterizing in five movements his various experiences and images of nature. Based on the music text of the Beethoven Complete Edition, the new performance material of this recently published edition presents the current, authoritative status of Beethoven research for this work. The study score (,,Studien-Edition) is available at G. Cittaslow is an international network of more than 220 towns in 30 countries. Its members are towns where people are still finding themselves reminiscing over the old times; towns that are rich in theatres, squares, cafés, restaurants and spiritual places; towns with untouched landscapes and charming craftsman where people are still able to recognize the slow course of the seasons, and respect their authentic products, true taste as well as their health. The Hymn of Cittaslow, which was commissioned by the organisation itself, is entirely inspired by their commitment to the preservation of the member towns. The tempo is naturally ‘slow', and the themes somehow soundfamiliar. On the one hand, the music emanates peace and quiet, but it also sounds grand in its lyricism, thereby reflecting the beauty of the Cittaslow towns.

Every band from Tommy Dorsey to the Tonight Show Band to Ted Heath seemed to have a version of this great Sy Oliver tune. Bob Curnow compiled some of those versions into one great, new arrangement. It features, of course, the trumpet section (Bob wrote it for an optional 5-player section) and two improvised trumpet solos. The swing band feel is very much a part of this chart which culminates in an ending that will knock your socks off. Your audiences will LOVE this one. 5-5-4-4.

“Transcribed by popular brass arranger, Robert King, this edition of Johann Pachelbel's Nun danket alle Gott provides an exciting performance piece for Choir, Organ and a large Brass Ensemble. Pachelbel (1653-1906) is, of course best remembered today for his Canon in D. However, his vocal music is also significant. Nun danket alle Gott is a motet based on a short passage from Ecclesiastes. An important feature of the work is that the endings of sections are in four-part chorale settings, with the sopranos singing long notes values whilst the other voices present shorter note values. King's arrangement of this historical work makes for an exciting performance. &rdquo.

Eduard Franck's two string sextets, op. 41 in E-flat major, published in 1882/84, and op. 50, in D major, completed in December 1884 but published posthumously in 1894, fall mysteriously outside of their era. They are a significant addition to the rather concise repertoire for string sextet, joining the two works in this genre by Johannes Brahms. Eduard Franck was one of the very few private students of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, who was himself a close friend of the Franck family, so that Eduard was firmly rooted in the Mendelssohn tradition. But what is particularly exciting in the sextets, is how he consistently further developed Mendelssohn's immanent genre-defining tendencies, thus founding a conservative alternative to the Schumann-Brahms course.

The arrangement is yet another amazing example of Bill Holman's extraordinary arranging skills. There is solo space for tenor saxophone and, of course, trumpet. There is no real need for any extra high trumpet playing. The ensemble shout choruses alone are enough reason to put this chart in every jazz band library in the land. Walker drew inspiration for this short, slow movement from I Thirst being the the fifth of Christ's last seven words from the cross - cries of dereliction and comfort that are meditated upon annually at Passiontide. I Thirst is a ritual of solo melody, homophony and biting figuration whose dessication is, in due course, quenched by waves of string harmonics. The work's pervading instability is resolved with the subduing power of melody finally bringing balance.

Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov (1865-1936) trained under Rimsky- Korsakov and became the most illustrious Russian composer and conductor immediately succeeding Tchaikovsky. Glazunov’s close affinity with the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, of which institution he would later become Director for more than two decades, placed him ideally to assist in the Institute’s transition to the Petrograd Conservatory in the immediate wake of the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. For the last six years of his life, Glazunov left the USSR, feeling hemmed in by propagandist restrictions and at the same time out of kilter with the Modernist movement. He lived in exile for a time, touring the USA, before eventually settling in Paris, though his stoical brand of Russian Romanticism never waned. Despite being partly remembered for having taught Shostakovich, Glazunov was never known as a revolutionary composer, more inclined to align himself with 19th century ideologies than with the thrusting new compositional paths forged by Prokofiev and others. Indeed, the nationalistic movement so successfully espoused by Balakirev found a new energy in Glazunov’s hands, and he discovered an opulence of scale which leaned more in the direction of Borodin. There can be no doubting Glazunov’s technical mastery, which successfully drew together contrapuntal, lyrical and virtuosic skills, and which were admired by the likes of Liszt. Glazunov steered a steady course at a time when it was most sorely needed; one need only hear the marvellous Violin Concerto in A minor to experience the full power and authority of his writing, though he possessed an enviable touch with more intimate forms too, such as those readily to be heard in these three charming Miniatures Op.42, originally composed for piano.Flute and PianoTranscribed by Mark TannerGrades 6 & 7Former Spartan Press Cat.
