Jacob de Haan especially composed this piece for the by now well-known C.D. Soli Brass. Not just a C.D. opener, this piece is an excellent concert starter. The title is a combination of the words Introduction and Disco. The composition is made up of a majestic opening, following in a section in disco style based on the same themes.

This hymn was commissioned by â??Antwerpen 93â?. And this city, on the banks of the river Schelde has been nominated â??Cultural Capital of Europeâ? for 1993. The work-group â??animatieâ? took the initiative and commissioned a hymn, which -as the finale to a grand open-air event on 27th March- was premièred by hundreds of musicians from all over Europe. Philippe Langlet (France) was the conductor at this majestic occasion.Musically speaking the piece can no doubt be labeled easy. Indeed it is meant to represent a hymn, playable by all in different instrumental combinations. Consequently a variable instrumentation was chosen and a type of music, which by native is easily accessible anduncomplicated.The conductor is free -in the instrumentation- to score this piece according to his own taste. It is perhaps advisable to use the sharp brass in the forte parts, in order to make the range in the sound of the orchestra as colouful as possible. The percussion parts are not absolutely essential, so that the hymn can also be performed without percussion.

Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) wrote a lot of songs, several of which Jacob de Haan has arranged for ensemble of variable strength. The songs are: Fremad! Fremad!, Stille Nu! and Fola, Fola, Blakken. It has been arranged for beginner bands and can be played with a minimum of four players (+ percussion).

Jacob de Haan arrangierte drei Lieder von Edvard Grieg und fasste sie in einer dreiteiligen Suite für ein vierstimmig variables Ensemble oder Blasorchester mit optionalen Mallet- und Klavierstimmen zusammen. Ainsi, le Concerto pour piano en La mineur (1868) et la musique de scène Peer Gynt (1876) ont été salués par les mélomanes du monde entier. Edvard Grieg a également composé un grand nombre de mélodies, chansons et lieder. Jacob de Haana choisi d’arranger trois de ces chansons : Fremad!, Fremad!, une chanson au caractère majestueux ; Stille Nu!, plus mélancolique en raison de sa tonalité mineure et Fola, Fola, Blakken, unallegro plein de gaieté qui vient conclure cette petite suite en trois parties.

Die Hanover Hymn stammt vom Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts, die heutige Form und ihren Namen bekam sie allerdings erst später. Das Arrangement von Jan de Haan beginnt mit einem luftigen, verspielten Thema, an welches sich die Liedmelodie, zunächst in den Posaunen gespielt, anschließt. Dann wird das Lied vierstimmig wiederholt, bevor das hohe Blech mit einer vom gesamten Orchester begleiteten Wiederholung das Werk majestätisch beendet.

This celebratory work, which Philip Sparke wrote for the 20th anniversary of the Nottingham Concert Band, starts with a hymn-like theme played as a fanfare in the brass. With a change of mood from ‘solemn’ to ‘merry’ and back to ‘majestic’, together with an unusual orchestration, in which may different instruments feature and in which at points the entire wind orchestra shimmers in tutti passages, A Nottingham Festival is a real pleasure for musicians and public alike.

A Nottingham Festival débute par un motif ascendant qui contraste avec la fougueuse entrée des cuivres. Puis l’ambiance se fait sereine pour introduire une mélodie jouée par les clarinettes et accompagnée d’un motif rythmique la caisse claire. Un crescendo mène un passage puissant repris par l’orchestre entier qui réintroduit la trame initiale. Le tableau final est rehaussé par la reprise majestueuse du thème d’origine, interprété cette fois par les cuivres, où s’entrelacent les attrayantes répliques des bois. Une coda énergique met fin cette somptueuse composition qui souligne la force créatrice du compositeur.

Just based on its title, this piece has to be celebratory and up-beat, which it is! It opens with a stately fanfare, first played on the low brass before the entire band joins in. This gives way to a contrasting lyrical theme which develops until it joins up with the fanfare to complete the opening section. A lively and heavily syncopated vivo follows, cast as a traditional march, complete with a 'bass strain' and trio. After the original march theme returns, a climax leads back to a reprise of the majestic opening, which brings the piece to an appropriately triumphant close.

Nach der Rückkehr des ursprünglichen Marschthemas führt ein Hohepunkt zu einer Reprise der majestatischen Eroffnung, womit das Stück angemessen trium phal endet.

Une ligne melodique vient contraster par son expressivite, avant d'etre rejointe par le theme d'ouverture pour cheminer conjointement vers un vivo passionne (une marche), suivi d'un trio. Le theme de la marche revient ; la trame s'amplifi e et la musique atteint son apogee, alors qu'eclate le contenu solennel des mesures initiales offrant une apotheose triomphale.

Fa da contrasto un tema lirico che, assieme alla fanfara, chiude la prima parte del brano. Segue un brillante vivo nello stile tradizionale della marcia. Dopo il ritorno del tema della marcia, e riproposto il tema di apertura, che accompagna il brano al suo finale.
