John Blanken has created a swinging arrangement of the famous Scottish traditional tune Scotland the Brave. The usual version with bagpipes is the best known and there is a similarity in Swingin’ Kilts owing to its long drone-like tones in the accompaniment. The theme has been rhythmically adapted but it is still easily recognisable. Swingin’ Kilts holds a challenge for every brass band. It makes demands in terms of timing and technique which give this work the bravura feel that will keep the audience as well as the musicians swinging in their seats.

Commissioned by the Richardson (Texas) Community Band Silver Celebration commemorates 25 years of service by their conductor George Jones. The work combines elements of traditional march style and also the bravura of epic film scores resulting in a piece that is both festive and celebratory in nature. The opening is a rousing 6/8 march featuring various sections of the band and exciting cross rhythms and then contrasted with a beautifully flowing lyric statement. A brief percussion feature leads to the final section recapping the opening themes with a flourish and dramatic appeal. Dur: 5:00
