Thanks to the four-part variable instrumentation (with ad lib. drums) this funeral march can be played by pretty much any ensemble - whether at a funeral on the way from the church to the cemetery, in the church itself or indeed on stage as part of a memorial concert.

Beethovens Eroica-Sinfonie liegt in zwei Bearbeitungen für Klavierquartett vor: von Ferdinand Ries (entstanden um 1804/1805) und von einem anonymen Bearbeiter (fl. 1807). Beide Fassungen bieten eine getreue Umsetzung der Vorlage, unterscheiden sich allerdings in Herangehensweise und Details. Obgleich Ries' Klavierquartett-Fassung der Eroica für den breiten Markt bestimmt war und folglich darauf zielen musste, von Laien musiziert zu werden, stellt sie doch erhebliche Anforderungen an jeden der vier Musiker; insbesondere das Pianoforte ist stark am musikalischen Geschehen beteiligt - ein Vergleich mit der Bearbeitung seines ungenannten Wiener Kollegen von 1807 ist dabei sehr aufschlussreich: Dort kommt der Klavierpart sehr viel simpler daher, verzichtet weitgehend auf Oktavierungen und vertraut imitatorisch geführte Passagen entweder ganz oder jedenfalls wesentlich den Streichern an. Ries' Bearbeitung ist einmal ein ausgewachsenes Klavierquartett, in dem sich die Kunstfertigkeit des angehenden Komponisten äußert, der um 1804/1805 gerade einmal zwanzig Jahre alt war.
