WINNER OF BASCA S 2012 BRITISH COMPOSER AWARD FOR WIND OR BRASS BAND.A Symphony of Colours was commissioned by the Fairey Band with assistance from the John Golland Trust. The first performance was given on 2 May 2011 during the European Brass Band Championships Montreux Switzerland by The Fairey Band conducted by Russell Gray. The same band gave the UK première on 29 January 2012 at the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass Manchester. The title of this substantial work relates to the rare condition of Synesthesia where sufferers see colours or smell scent in response to hearing music. One of the most famous musicians who had thiscondition was Olivier Messiaen to whom this dramatic piece is a homage. Dobson s music incorporates sideways glances towards Messiaen s great organ work L Ascension. The Symphony s four movements which merge seamlessly into a single span are Joy Chroma (which is a journey through Dobson s own perception of Synesthesia) Endless Time (where tuned percussion features alongside extended solos for the euphonium) and the final climactic Ascent.Dobson s A Symphony of Colours which was conceived as a virtuoso work for elite brass bands.

Rodelinda Regina de' Longobardi HWV 19; Opera in three acts. After Giulio Cesare and Tamerlano Rodelinda is the third masterly opera that Handel composed between December 1723 and January 1725. The words were written by Nicola Haym the author of many other Handel librettos. The first performance took place at the King’s Theatre in the Haymarket London on 13 February 1725. Rodelinda thrives entirely on the ethical supremacy of conjugal love and thus prefigures the great operas by Gluck and Beethoven on the same subject. The plot is taken from the history of the Lombard royalty. Oskar Hagen’s revival of Rodelinda in 1920 ushered in the modern Handel operamovement. The work forms the climax to a series of dramatic masterpieces that includes Handel’s most significant operas. Handel returned to Rodelinda on two occasions in December 1725 and in May 1731. Many far-reaching changes were necessary owing to the different skills of the new singers. For example Handel wrote three new arias and a duet for the first revival. Yet the changes he made for this performance doubtless to accommodate the needs and wishes of the singers also improve the work’s dramatic substance. Our vocal score is based on the Urtext of the full score published in the Halle Handel Edition (II/16) and reproduces the various alternative readings and versions in an appendix.Urtext of the Halle Handel Edition.Full score (BA4064) & vocal score (BA4064-90) available for sale.Performance material (BA4064-72) available for hire

Score-'Down the moving line suddenly came the surging chant:Chi Rho Omega Lambda Chi!We meet tonight to celebrateThe Omega Lambda Chi!'''Omega Lambda Chi' was a fictitious fraternity created by some Yale sophomores in the 1870's. Freshmen were pledged to a non-existent society so they would buy the sophomores cigars and drinks. By the 1880's the name 'Omega Lambda Chi' had become applied to a wild May night of campus festivities. Classes paraded (sometimes with a band) singing shooting firecrackers and cheering the buildings of the Old Campus. Climaxing the rough and tumble evening was the 'Pass of Thermopolae.' In this brutal affair theFreshman class ran the gauntlet through the large stone Phelps Gateway while receiving the blows of the three upper classes. March: Omega Lambda Chi was probably written during Ives' Christmas vacation in 1895 and completed upon his return to school. It bears the title 'March on the air: Omega Lambda Chi 76 South Middle Campus January 4 1896.' The Yale Daily News reports that the ceremony took place that spring (May 18 1896) and that one of Ives' best friends D. C. Twitchell (later his brother-in-law) was one of the Omega Lambda Chi marshals. By 1900 the Omega Lambda Chi had become too dangerous and was outlawed by the faculty. Another Ives composition which was inspired by a Yale festive evening is Calcium Light Night.Charles Ives was a Yale student from 1894-1898. He was a popular figure on campus and was very active in social athletic and musical life. In 1928 Ives made a list of his band music on the back of one of his insurance company calendars. At least ten original band works are thought to have existed; there are numerous others that were band inspired. Only March: Omega Lambda Chi and March: Intercollegiate have been found complete in their band form. The tune 'Omega Lambda Chi' is derived from 'Sailing sailing' found in the first strain. Janácek's 2nd String Quartet Intimate Letters is regarded as a highlight of the modern string quartet literature. It was written during the composer?s last year of life between 29 January and 19 February 1928 inspired by the ageing Janáèek's exceptional love for Kamila Stösslová. The Moravian Quartet devoted themselves to this impressive work; Janácek attended a total of three of their rehearsals in May and June 1928. This had several consequences including his abandoning his original idea of using a viola d'amore. After Janácek's unexpected death (12 August 1928) the uncertain genesis of the work became the greatest problem of the IntimateLetters : the surviving copies were not definitively authorised. The editors of this new edition have reverted to Janácek's autograph sketches as the main most reliable source and using these as a basis have reconstructed the work as it stood at the point of Janácek's death. The musical text taken from the Critical Complete Edition of the Works of Leo? Janácek (Vol. E/4) therefore contains clear differences in comparison with older editions.

Night Dance was written between September 1986 and January 1987 to a commission from David Starobin who gave the first performance on 5 April 1987 at the Wigmore Hall London. It is a miniature tone-poem depicting ascene of an old man sitting in a doorway at dusk. He is playing a guitar and begins by plucking the lowest string as though searching for what he wishes to play. As the music gains momentum it gradually moves upwards by meansof the guitar’s open strings and breaks into a dance. Now it is dark and a nightmarish band of dancers passes by the old guitarist. The dance jerky and uneven develops melodically and harmonically the initial material of thepiece. After a climax the dancers move on - the dance music subsides and a nocturne is heard interrupted periodically by the music of the dance in the distance. Maybe this is not geographical distance but the distance oftime perhaps the whole episode has been mere memories. The piece ends musingly with the motive from which it began.

Journey of the Lone Wolf tells the story of the hungarian composer Béla Bartók...(+)
Journey of the Lone Wolf tells the story of the hungarian composer Béla Bartók. It was commissioned by Dr. Nicholas Childs for Black Dyke Band who gave the first performance on Sunday 26 January 2014 at the Bridgewater Hall Manchester as part of the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass. The composer's programme notes for each movement:1. Capturing the Peasants SongAfter the upheaval of moving to Budapest the young Béla Bartók meets Zoltán Kodály and the pair embark on summertime adventures throughout the Hungarian countryside to collect and catalogue the astonishingvariety (both harmonically and rhythmically) of gypsy and folk music heard in the Balkans. The arrival of WW1 plunges Bartók's beloved Hungary into chaos.2. Night MusicBartók was at times a cold man aloof and lonely. The odd moments of tenderness he showed are portrayed here in a series of evocative solos. His brief but intense affairs speak of a love he could only long for. Jazz is my night music and here there are hints of what Bartók may have heard in the USA later in his life.3. Flight and FightHaving been forced by the world's evils to leave his homeland of Hungary for America Bartók the anti-fascist felt isolated and angry. In this movement we hear his longing for a simpler time of gypsy folk dances as well as his maturity and depth as a composer finally exploring deeper colours and darker themes.

This piece is a paraphrase of a song that Wood wrote between 30 January and 1 February 1983 to a poem by Robert Graves called ‘Bird of Paradise’.The music is continuous but falls into five sections of which the first threeare variations on the emerging material of the song. In the fourth (which is the loudest) the original vocal line may most clearly be heard: it has been somewhat extended both in length and in register. In the fifth and finalsection the pianoforte plays the song line in the manner of a chorale; and later the clarinet recapitulates the closing phrase of the song quite fairly exactly. The opening of the song is heard on the highest register of theclarinet before the close.'Paraphrase' was written for Nicholas Cox and was first performed with Vanessa Latarche at the Wigmore Hall on 4 March 1985. It was composed during 1984/85.

bearbeitet für 3 Schlagzeuger von Yu Fujiwara (2016)-Ursula Mamlock who emigrated from Germany in 1939 composed 2000 Notes her most important work for piano solo in New York. Here she studied and taught composition until she returned to her native city of Berlin in 2006.In 2015 Yu Fujiwara arranged 2000 Notes for three percussionists (xylophone glockenspiel vibraphone and marimbaphone). Ursula Mamlok was unable to attend the world premiere in Basel in January 2016 but heard a performance in Villingen-Schwenningen on 12 April and delighted with the new tone colours authorized this arrangement. This is the last composition prior to her death in May 2016 which could be newly entered in hercatalogue of works as an arrangement. Rich in contrast this short concise piece is typical of her style and a valuable addition to the canon of percussion works.

Par HUMMEL BERTOLD. With the Eight Fragments Bertold Hummel has successfully created a most impressive work. Uncommonly concentrated in the evoking of atmosphere and reflecting the texts strongly, these 'dark grey songs' - to quote Ludwig Hirsch - develop a sadly expressive, almost somnambulant charm. These songs seem to have become Bertold Hummel's completely inwardly turned 'Winterreise', the epigram of a psychosis, full of concealed suggestion and dark references, but always more full of hope. The 'sun' becomes the constantly invoked bearer of hope.
The music is highly expressive, exploiting the various performing and bowing possibilities of the stringed instruments and their capacity for nuances to the limits; occasionally oppressive visions in sound appear. It is music in danger, of a most fragile balance. Nor are subtle musical references missing. With only one note, following the word 'music', harmony and tonality are conjured up. / Date parution : 2007-11-20/ Répertoire / Baryton et Quatuor à Cordes
