We know Michelangelo as sculptor and painter, but he also authored some 300 sonnets. The great Rainer Maria Rilke set to translating the sonnets, assembling a collection of 24, from which Rihm has chosen three to set to baritone voice. Composed and premiered in 2013. For advanced performers.

In 2010 I lived in Rome as a Villa Massimo scholarship holder. During my time there I came across a few poems by Michelangelo that touched me a lot and soon had the plan to set some of them to music. But I wanted to combine it with something contemporary - just like in Rome the old and the new always meet. The poet Marcel Beyer, whom I met in Rome, then wrote the cycle of poems Die Grillmeisterin for me, which takes up many motifs from the Michelangelo texts (fire, tears, getting burned, loneliness, etc.). I then alternately combined this cycle of poems with the Michelangelo poems. The Italian songs have a sometimes melancholy, sometimes dramatic character, while the German songs are rather bizarre, sometimes even humorous. Despite these contrasts in character, there are also many musical connections between the German and Italian songs. Individual motifs and chord sequences sometimes return in completely different contexts, and there is even a direct connection between the first and last song, in that the same vocal line is underlaid with a completely different text. This creates a musical framework that holds the very heterogeneous selection of texts together. Anno Schreier.

Hasse's Cleofide of 1731 can be regarded as the zenith of his creative output - not least of all because he integrated several of his greatest arias from earlier works into this opera. The theme from antiquity Alexander's conquests in India was perfectly suited to flatter August the Strong, a rather unsuccessful commander-in-chief, who at that moment was occupied with the reorganization of his armies. For performance at the Court of Dresden, Metastasio's original libretto was reworked by Michelangelo Boccardi. As a result, the title of the opera was changed from Alessandro nell' Indie to Cleofide and Faustina Bordoni, the prima donna and wife of Johann Adolf Hasse, became the protagonist of the story. Musically, the opera reflected the style of the time. Hasse's expressive and natural style was admired and appreciated by the public professional musicians alike. The vocal parts were tailor-made for the singers and in performing this work the outstanding soloists and the orchestra could shine. Hasse always tried to get the utmost from his musicians and in the case of Cleofide he achieved a 100% success. The Carus edition of Cleofide, which has been published as a part of the Hasse-Werkausgabe, is the very first printed edition of this work. It is based primarily on the original parts used for the first performance in 1731 and presents both an accurate musicological rendering of the sources as well as a practical performance edition.

Madonna of Silence is far from the quiet piece implied by the title. Indeed, it reflects the inner turbulence of Michelangelo's extraordinary drawing Madonna del Silenzio on which the work is based. Michelangelos drawing has informed every aspect of my new work, which I have decided not to call trombone concerto, but a drama for trombone and orchestra. The trombone takes on many roles: at the start it represents the quiet, inner voice of the Madonna as she gazes in contemplation at the child, later singing a hymn and, towards the end of the work, lamentations. Both soloist and orchestra are equally engaged in the unfolding drama of a scene brimming with unease and premonitions. John Casken.

With the Petrarch settings, I am continuing my preoccupation with classical Italian literature, after setting Michelangelo in 2011 and Ariosto in 2013. The gesture and harmony of the piece are developed entirely from the text and from the sensations that are expressed there. Petrarch's poetry is an exploration of beauty and pain that begins again and again: beauty that lies in pain and pain that is causedby beauty. Anno Schreier.
