| Ponzol Peter - Saxophone
Workshop - Pocket Guide Saxophone Jamey Aebersold Jazz
Imagine someone who has worked as an international saxophonist, an educator, a t...(+)
Imagine someone who has worked as an international saxophonist, an educator, a technician, a consultant, and as a designer, and you can imagine Peter Ponzol. For the first time, Peter offers details from his famous Saxophone Workshops. Learn about: ? Maintenance ? Reeds ? Mouthpieces ? Ligatures ? Sound ? Flexibility This exciting and informational pocket book will be a much needed addition to your musical library! Convenient pocket-sized book - 3.5 x 5.5 - perfect to toss in your gig bag! 64 pages. Peter has been around saxophones for decades, doing it all from manufacturing horns to reeds to mouthpieces. As well, he is a seasoned player. What he discusses in this book is coming from one of the sources-read carefully! - David Liebman, Sax artist/ author/ clinician. Read this review from Sax On The Web: The information in this book is right up SOTW?s alley, with answers regarding reeds, necks, mouthpieces, saxes, maintenance, and the like. I would assume that the number of redundant threads started could be reduced almost in half simply with a reading of this book and those owning it could refer back to it at their leisure, as needed. And there is enough info in this book which contradicts some of our SOTW urban legends to make an episode of MythBusters. If you catch the right posts at the right time, much of the info in this book is already posted here on SOTW. But you have to see it and if hunting for it, you have to find it. OTOH it?s all conveniently gathered and organized here in this primer - plus more. There are suggestions such as replacing the neck cork once or twice a year, which I would, if posting a response, say is not necessary. But here?s the difference. Many of us on the forum are experienced musicians but few have the experience and depth that Ponzol has. We can write with credibility - Ponzol writes with authority. And this is based on decades not only as a top-echelon player, but as a successful and innovative sax, neck and mpc designer. The book is a 61 page pocket reference booklet which, in addition to topics mentioned above, include thoughts on ligatures, sound and flexibility. It is based on items of interest asked by attendees at workshops he has given over the years, hence the title. He begins by pointing out that at these workshops one of the first things he does is look at the condition of attendees' equipment with the observation that at least 90% of them need some kind of work and adjustments. What follows in the book?s 61 pages are recommendations generated by this observation. Included are interesting comments such as: aging store-bought reeds by letting them sit for several years is fairly useless since the aging process stops once the bark has been cut away from the reed; not earth-shattering but interesting and certainly myth debunking. Again something that fits right in with many of the conversations on this forum. Interesting thoughts follow regarding the future of natural cane reeds, or how to select and get the most from your reeds - things I wouldn?t think of like sanding the heel of your reed. SOTWers might also get a kick out of, and relate to, the title of his section on mouthpieces, ?Now the Fun Begins?. There are also interesting side comments we don?t often hear like: in the 70s so many young players like Ponzol were trying to get Trane?s recorded sound by working on metal Links because that?s what they saw in photos and yet, Trane often recorded with hard rubber mpcs because, in Trane's opinion, it didn?t have as much spit in the sound for him. It?s interesting how some things come around back to you. There are two exercises I recommend to my students and have recommended on the forum regarding volume and embouchure control and flexibility. I?ve never heard anyone else recommend these exercises and yet here they are in Peter?s book. Then it hit me. The only other one I know who uses them is a former teacher of mine and I remembered that years ago he said he had had some lessons with Ponzol. So ?the circle is unbroken? LOL. I would highly recommend it for beginners and intermediates, as well as for more advanced players to recommend to their students. It has made me re-think even some of my most basic assumptions regarding equipment and maintenance, which has made the read well worth it. I wish every SOTW newbie would start out their Forum time with this booklet at their disposal.

Grades 1 - 4-As I sit myself down to write this brief foreword I ask myself can there be music more stirring than these old Cornish folk melodies? Though not Cornish myself (I confess to being born a little further up the road in Bristol) I feel I have spent sufficient time in these 'ere parts to resonate with the sturdy brass band tradition that continues to permeate this incomparably beautiful rugged county. One can almost detect a French 'accent' when listening to the piano music of Debussy and likewise speaking as a lapsed brass player there is undoubtedly something of the Cornish twang about Trelawny when played on a cornet or euphonium. Then again one gets a different yet entirely convincing effect upon hearing these melodies rendered on woodwind instruments; hence with a little gamesmanship on my part I am pleased to see my collection of these fifteen delectable ditties come to fruition in the form of arrangements for treble clef brass instruments (in B flat and E flat) Trombone and Tuba (bass clef) Horn in F Flute Clarinet and Bassoon. While many will find themselves humming the likes of Going up Camborne Hill Lamorna or The Helston Furry Dance even before they have turned to the first page - for these are indelibly intertwined with Cornish culture – I wonder if I might draw your attention to The Cornish Squire The Pool of Pilate and Cold Blows the Wind Today Sweetheart which are quite simply sublime melodies perhaps needing that extra bit of help in bringing them to mind nowadays. In the best tradition of musical hand-me-downs Cornish folk music works equally ideally sung and played and only by doing so on a regular basis can such traditions hope to continue forward with vigour and authority. A legitimate way of achieving this is to revitalise the harmonic scheme of these ancient tunes and bring them up to date for a modern audience; after all it was such an approach that fuelled the imagination of Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan

Martin Luther. Par SCHNEIDER ENJOTT. On the occasion of the quincentenary of Ref...(+)
Martin Luther. Par SCHNEIDER ENJOTT. On the occasion of the quincentenary of Reformation Day in 2017, the composer Enjott Schneider thoroughly studied Martin Luther the individual and all his contradictions. The result is a brilliant, demanding organ symphony which is perfect for concerts on the subject of Reformation and Martin Luther.
The composer describes the five movements of the symphony as follows:
'1st movement:
Wir glauben all an einen Gott with its quintuplet-like beginning is very Gregorian in style, outlining the range of Lutheran emotionalism between the Middle Ages and the modern era. The irrationality of 'faith' ultimately has priority over any thought and evidence. At the beginning of the movement, sounds of knocking on wood remind of the nailing of the Ninety-Five Theses to the doors of churches in Wittenberg. The chorale melody sometimes hides with an almost rough medieval saltarello, referring to Luther's robustness and vitality with which he knew to carry away even common people.
2nd movement:
In 1530, the electoral prince of Saxony presented to Luther at Coburg Castle the golden signet ring with the 'Luther rose' which became the symbol of his theology of grace. A white heart with black cross is fixed on a five-petalled rose. To him, 'white' is the colour of angels and ghosts, 'black' stands for the pain of crucification: 'The just shall live by faith, but by faith in the Crucified.' But the fact that the rose and the heart are the dominating symbols shows how Catholic Marian piety remained an ingredient of Luther's spirituality throughout his life. In line with the dominant five-petal structure of the rose, this movement was composed, to a large extent, in accordance with the floating, lyrical rhythm in 5/8 time.
3rd movement:
The omnipresence of death and dying – from the plague and war to the never-ending dangers of daily life – was an essential part of the world view of that time. Fears ensued that might heighten into the grotesque, e.g. in the pictures of Hieronymus Bosch. The 'Danse macabre' was a popular motif in those years. Luther's chorale 'Mitten wir im Leben sind / mit dem Tod umfangen' from 1524 ('Enchiridion' from Erfurt) is based on the Gregorian chant 'Media vita in morte sumus' created in France around 750 and, with its idea of transience, inspired a simplistic air.
4th movement:
The famous confession delivered at the Diet of Worms in 1521, 'I stand here and can say no more. God help me. Amen', are not Luther's words but the version later used as text for a pamphlet. However, it represents quite plainly the straightforwardness and inevitability of his mission. Musically, it was made into a 'perpetuum mobile', i.e. a dogged, ostinato and never-ending musical air.
5th movement:
The 'Mighty Fortress', on the other hand, is one of the great symbols of Martin Luther which, with its shining C major key, embodies the Protestant ideology and willful nature of the Reformation unlike any other song. Heinrich Heine called it the 'Marseille anthem of the Reformation', Friedrich Engels the 'Marseillaise of the Peasants' Wars'. This disputability is not thought through to the end but rather interrupted: With a jubilant 'birdcall version' of the melody, the finale shows a rather chamber-music-like side of the 'ideals of freedom of Christians'.'/ Répertoire / Orgue

?The main goal of this book is to present what could be called Brazilian guitar today working melodically harmonically and rhythmically in some of the most important Brazilian musical styles. .We have chosen to always use twoelectric guitars in these arrangements (but in the song ?Violeiros e Cantadores? which is for solo electric guitar) so that the essential functions of the guitar rhythm melody and harmony might beexpressed in the clearestand best way in each different style. We have made three versions of each piece for ease of study: a complete one one without the first electric guitar and one without the second electric guitar. Therefore the student will beable to listen to the complete version and thenpractice with the other ones playing the missing parts of the first guitar and the second guitar. At the end of the book like an appendix we have included the bass lines used inthe recordings to strengthen the rhythmic and harmonic comprehension of each style.? All music is in notation and tablature. A free recording of the music is available as an internet download.

Following a reflective opening where the pitch development outlines a twelve-note series the music gradually becomes more agitated developing into a kind of danse macabre eventually reaching a powerful climax. The music then subsides into a much more tranquil atmosphere and the previous dissonant material transposes itself into a simple melody(like a lullaby) uttered by the violin the outline of which both melodically and in terms of the accompaniment figuration has already been present in the piece since the beginning. Thus the turmoil of the first part of the work becomes transfigured into something much more peaceful - hence the quotation that prefaces the score: ?out of darkness cometh light?. After I finished the work it became apparent to me that it might become the sketch for the slow movement of a Violin Concerto on which I had just begun working. It did indeed form the basis of that slow movement and the concerto was premiered by Lyn Fletcher and the Halle Orchestra conducted by Kent Nagano at Bridgewater Hall Manchester in February 2000 the same month as Serenata Notturna itself was first played in public.'Edward Gregson

Classical Guitar Arrangements from Bizet's Opera Carmen. One might think that it...(+)
Classical Guitar Arrangements from Bizet's Opera Carmen. One might think that it would be impossible to arrange the music of Georges Bizet?s opera, Carmen, for solo classic guitar, but Néstor Ausqui has done it! While the guitar is an intimate and sweet-sounding instrument, it does not have a broad dynamic range; yet, as Dionisio Aguado proclaimed in his Nuevo Método para Guitarra of 1843, the classic guitar?s expansive palette of tone color gives it the ability to emulate ?a miniature orchestra?. These characteristics make the guitar the ideal instrument to reflect both the character and sensuality of the dances that occur throughout Bizet?s Carmen?Aragonaise, Habanera, Seguidillas, and Danse Bohéme?as well as Carmen?s sober ?Chant de la Mort?. Recommended for the advanced guitarist, Carmen Suite is written in standard notation with extensive digitation and occasional drop-D tuning. In Néstor Ausqui?s Carmen Suite, ??the guitar both sings like a human voice and accompanies itself, giving the work an irrefutable guitar identity. The characteristic feeling manifested in Spanish dance is now expressed through the guitar with a full and defined instrumental singularity.? ? Guillermo Rene? Alexander Borodin/Anatoly Lyadov-This collection contains arrangements by one of the leading guitarists of the new generation Rovshan Mamedkuliev. Rovshan invites Guitar lovers to explore Russian music of the 19th century. Alexander Borodin(1833 - 1887) member of the famous Mighty Handful wrote his Petite Suite for the Piano. The four pieces presented in this collection barely utilize any of the Piano's idiomatic techniques. Though unfamiliar to the Guitar untilthe present day the selected miniatures are wonderfully suited to its technical and timbral capabilities especially Serenade. Thanks to the clearly defined genre of Nocturne the vivid imagery of Reverie and the folk colour andbell-like melodiousness of In the Cloister the four pieces rich in quality and substance will be a valuable contribution to the Guitar repertoire.Anatoly Lyadov (1855 - 1914) used to joke that he could not standmore than five continuous minutes of music. The genius of musical miniature created his compositions to be laconic and refined in form simple yet elegant. Lyadov's contemporaries called his pieces 'tiny pearls of finestfinishing' and compared the composer himself to a jeweler. His three preludes from op.36 op.39 and op.40 will become a fulfilling experience for the guitarist as the music explores the rich palette of the 'mysterious Russiansoul' ranging from stormy aspirations to dreamlike elegiac moods - expressed by the composer in but a few sounds.
