Grazyna Bacewicz: Concerto For String Orchestra: String Orchestra: Score
String Orchestra
PWM (Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne)
Concerto for String Orchestra - the magnum opus of Grayna Bacewicz (1909-1969) ...
(+)
Concerto for String Orchestra - the magnum opus of Grayna Bacewicz (1909-1969) the outstanding composer and violinist - was composed in 1948 and at once became one of the most frequently performed works of this Polish artist. This masterpieceof neoclassicism fascinates as much by its invention and virtuosic briliance as its harmonious combination of formal elements of a traditional nature with new tonal ideas. The form of the three-movement Concerto oscillates between that of the baroqueconcerto grosso and the early classical sonata cycle. The neoclassical tendency is evident above all in the articulation of the musical structure in keeping with the rigours of periodicity and the manner of developing thematic threads derived fromthem while the concertato character of particular movements and the generally linear texture indicate baroque connections. The first movement (Allegro) - in the form of an early classical sonata allegro - begins with a subject with energeticfigurations emblematic for the whole piece and based on a constant pendulum-like semiquaver movement anchored securely on D. It is precisely because of the nature of this subject that Bacewiczs work has been compared to the Brandenburg Concertosby Jan Sebastian Bach The second movement (Andante) while retaining its concertato charakter is at the same time an example of the composers ability to create emotionally serene lyrical moods and her sense of cantilena derived from the spiritof romantic song (a motto-subject presented at the beginning by cello solo). In this movement it is both the process of evolution and the instrumental colouring which constitute the constructional agents forming here a self-containedvalue. In thethird movement (Vivo) the composer returns to her favourite type of music understood as an expression of pure motion in the form of figural motives with infinite transformational possibilities. The spontaneity of the music the constant mutabilityof the tonal situations and the sophisticated acerbic harmonies - as Witold Lutosawski described them - form a colourful mosaic built in the structural skeleton of a sonata rondo. Concerto for String Orchestra is not only proof of thestylizing tendency of the composer but also of an unerring intuition concerning the technical and expressive possibilities inherent in a string instruments ensemble. Three Nocturnal Movements - For Violin Solo Violoncello Solo And Orchestra by Per Nørgård (2015). Based on Remembering Child for Viola and Orchestra(1986). Premiered by Peter Herresthal (violin) and Jakob Kullberg (cello) with Bergen Philharmonic June 6th 2015 in Bergen Norway. The original version was premiered by Pinchas Zukerman and the St. Paul' s Chamber Orchestra conducted by Arturo di Mecke on September 12th 1986.Programme Note:The news of the tragic death of Samantha Smith reached me in the early stages of preparation for the commissioned work for viola and chamberorchestra. Already an admirerer of this childworker for peace and nuclear disarmament I completed my work strongly inspired by this unique and uniquely symbolic fate of our time. Music from humble sources - including my composition Beach Poppy a choral work from 1960 - are woven into the texture of the composition. I was guided by the original meaning of the word 'remembering' (making whole healing) in opposition to 'dismembering' (tearing apart): The healing power of the child.(Per Nørgård)

Ten Secret Doors - Suite For Orchestra was composed by Swedish composer Britta Byström in 2010. Commissioned by Västerås Sinfonietta and premiered by VS conducted by Johannes Gustavsson on April 14 2011. Programme note: Each of the ten movements in the orchestral suite Ten Secret Doors contains a transformation a stage-change in sound meant to give a feeling that the music 'slips away'. In the first movement this transformation is achieved by a sudden orchestral sound change from tutti to solo. There follow changes from muted sound to open sound from wind section to string section from bow play to pizzicato play. In the last movement there is a trumpet solo that is first played on stage then off stage - a transformation from close to distant. I pictured the ending of every movement as the opening rather than the closing of a door.In this work there is also a small musical quotation from 'Von fremden Ländern und Menschen' (from Robert Schumann's famous Kinderszenen). This phrase snuck into music as a greeting from another suite characterized by many short movements of flightiness and lightness.(Britta Byström)

(+)
The composer writes:Pilgrim was inspired it will be no surprise to learn by reading Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress - Vaughan Williams's great opera on the subject had fascinated me from its first performance yet it was a long time before I caught up with this essential item in any well-stocked library of English classics. It made a great impression not least because of its theme of a journey of self-discovery and a rediscovery or renewal of faith. These are ideas which have a strong interest for me not in religious terms but in their application to every aspect of human life (including great journeys) and this piece reflects my response in musical terms to this concern. The tempo of the whole piece which lasts about 18 minutes is basically slow. There are two quick episodes but these act somewhat like the trio sections of a classical scherzo save that the tempo relationships are inverted (the classical trios would have been slower not quicker) and the canvas is much larger being that of a single substantial slow movement. The form of the whole is perhaps fantasia-like rather than having any relationship to classical forms such as sonata or rondo - some motifs and themes are varied as the work develops and the opening chords are of primary importance throughout the work. There has been no attempt to convey any pictorial elements deriving from Bunyan's great book. There is however one feature which upon completion of the score struck me with some force which is that almost all the thematic material is essentially striving upwards - there is a constant upward movement (sometimes over a lengthy period) throughout the work. Pilgrim was commissioned by the Luton Music Club for the Raphael Ensemble with funds provided by the Eastern Arts Board and Bedfordshire County Council and is dedicated to the Luton Music Club. The first performance was given in Luton on February 10th 1997 and followed as part of a joint scheme by performances in the same week at the Music Clubs of Bedford and Leighton Buzzard.

(+)
In Tchaikovsky's symphonic output his Symphony No. 4 was a pivotal work. It announced the composer as a major symphonist of his time overshadowing his previous less-than-distinguished efforts in this form and opened the way to his last major works: the haunting Fifth Symphony and the biographical Sixth the profound 'Pathétique.'Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony ? written in 1877 at the age of thirty-seven ? offers itself as an intensely personal statement. Dramatically shaped and brilliantly orchestrated it captures a theatrical quality and orchestral color that shaped the composer's symphonic fantasy Francesca da Rimini written just a year earlier. The Fourth opensunequivocally with the thrust of a brass fanfare ? the 'fate' motive that is to reappear in the last movement ? then flows with the effortless quality that characterizes Tchaikovsky's great generously melodious ballet scores. The second movement lingers over one of the composer's most poignant melodies and the third ? the Scherzo ? offers a delightful fantasy from this master orchestrator: the charming Pizzicato ostinato a unique moment in the entire orchestral literature. The symphony is reproduced here from the authoritative Breitkopf & Härtel edition with bar-numbered movements and ample margins at the bottom of each score page for notes and analysis. Ideal for study in the classroom at home or in the concert hall this affordable high quality conveniently sized volume will be the edition of choice for music students and music lovers alike.Reprint of the Breitkopf & Härtel edition.

for Orchestra Full Score. Par PENG-PENG GONG. “In celebration of the 40th anniversary of China-U.S. diplomatic relations and in hope to support the promotion of Chinese culture abroad, Peng-Peng Gong's (b. 1992) Tenth Symphony, subtitled 'Peking Fantasy' (Op. 55) was co-commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra in 2017. The world premiere of the 2018 original version was presented by the SPO in April of the same year in Shanghai, while the world premiere of the 2019 revised version was presented by the Philadelphia Orchestra in January at its home venue with the combined forces of both orchestras side-by-side. Inspired by the artistic power of Peking Opera ?the crowning heritage of Chinese traditional performing arts, the symphony strives to translate the emotional and philosophical experience of the art form for international audiences and to explore the Western orchestra's expressive abilities in capturing the Eastern spirit. The 2018 original version ran as long as 76 minutes, before the composer extensively revised the score down to 40 and presented it in a single movement without pause. The work is scored for a huge orchestra of over 100 players. Main materials that inspired the music are from the traditional Peking Opera repertory: The Drunken Beauty, Farewell My Concubine, In Pursuit of the General, and The Chancellor and the Advisor (lit. Cao Cao and Yang Xiu). 'Peking Fantasy' is in a sweet, direct musical language ...It's a work of highly original sounds presented in a series of vivid episodes.” -Peter Dobrin, The Philadelphia Inquirer Please note: this item will be printed at the time of ordering and will ship as soon as possible, usually within 2-3 weeks. / Date parution : 2022-01-18/ Répertoire / Orchestre

Full score for Carl Nielsen's Symphonic Rhapsody (1888). Corresponding to The Carl Nielsen Edition Vol. 8. This allegro movement for symphony orchestra composed in 1888 when Carl Nielsen was in his early twenties was originally conceived as the first movement of a symphony as is evident from the autograph title Symfoni on the first page of music of the ink fair copy. However Carl Nielsen never composed the whole symphony. On 26th February 1893 when the piece was given its first performance conducted by Victor Bendix it was as an independent movement. Two days before the first performance Carl Nielsen noted in his diary: “To a rehearsal ofmy symphonic movement for the People’s Concert. The piece has been given the title ‘Symphonic Rhapsody’. It sounds fine and although it now seems naive to me there is still so much of my own and such a good attitude in the piece that I think it is rather good all the same.” (Thomas Michelsen editor)

Score-Morton Gould's Fall River Legend ballet suite for Orchestra. Study score.Fall River Legend was commissioned by Ballet Theatre with choreography by Agnes de Mille music byMorton Gould and sets by Oliver Smith and recieved its world premiere performance at the Metropolitan Opera House New York on April 22 1948.Having selected for her subject the historical Lizzie Borden murder case deMille used both pantomime and ballet techniques to convey the story. Morton Gould created the musical score in a similar way alternating programmatic sections with more formal dance patterns. The set dance movements formthe basis of this orchestral suite omitting most of the purely dramatic sequences.A feeling of austerity and doom opens the Prologue followed by a group of Waltzes depicting Lizzie's childhood. The sadness of Lizzie'sgirlhood is reflected in the nostalgic Elegy. Church social is a setting for a parish dance and Hymnal Variations suggest the old New England hymn tunes. The festive Cotillion is an exhuberant sequence of dancing patterns.Epilogue returns to the foreboding mood of the prologue.

(+)
Commissioned by the first Sibelius Conductor's Competition held in Helsinki in May 1995 as an obligatory piece to be rehearsed by all the competitors Arena was performed in its totality at the annual Avanti! Chamber Orchestra'sfestival in Porvoo (Finland). Thematic thinking has never been a main feature in Lindberg's music but here horizontal lines (one would not yet dare to call them melodies) gain some independence for example in ornamental figuresand in the intense cello solo around the middle of the piece. Arena also reveals some clearly new material - Lindberg has talked about Beethoven-like formal thinking referring to a passage where the sense of movement seems toaccelerate to an extreme so that finally one perceives only a motionless surface. Another new element - which was already used to some extent at the warmly hovering ending of Aura - is the almost romantic sound world and thesuspension of the harmonies in the final climax which can make one think of Mahler and Berg or Lindberg's grand predecessor and compatriot Sibelius. This is the Score published by Chester Music; the duration of thepieces is approximately 16 minutes.

(+)
From the Suite To Gozzi's Fairy Tale Drama-The Gozzi's Turandot - in one form or another - occupied Busoni at various times in the years 1904-1917. He was very fond of fantastical and magical tales: his immediately preceding work was the Piano Concerto Op. 39 BV247 which included music from an unfinished adaptatioon of Adam Oehlenschläger's Aladdin. In 1904 Busoni began sketching incidental music for Gozzi's Chinese fable. He also arranged a concert suite which was first performed in 1905 and published in 1906. A production of Gozzi's play with Busoni's music was mounted by Max Reinhardt in Berlin in 1911 and for the second and last time in London in 1913. This transcription of the first movement of Busoni's Turandotsuite was created for George A. Treviño and his superb Lopez High School Band of Brownsville Texas. The piece was premiered in February 2017 at the Texas Music Educators Association convention on the occasion of the Lopez band's 6A Honor Band performance.

With the ?Concerto for Orchestra ? Henle inaugurates a series of affordable study scores based on the text of the Bartók Complete Edition. When Bartók received the commission to compose this piece from Serge Koussevitsky in May 1943 it meant not only financial support but also an important creative impetus for the gravely ill composer. By October the five-movement concerto which Koussevitsky enthusiastically dubbed ?the best orchestral work of the last 25 years ? was already complete. The first performances in the winter of 1944 45 were also very successful. Nevertheless Bartók was moved to set down an alternate ending which thecomposer who passed away in September 1945 would never be destined to hear. Bartók specialist Klára Móricz includes both versions in her edition and summarises the history and transmission of the ?Concerto for Orchestra? in a fascinating foreword. A brief commentary section provides information about the principles underlying the edition.

Per Nørgård's Symphony No. 2 In One Movement - work for Orchestra dating from ...
(+)
Per Nørgård's Symphony No. 2 In One Movement - work for Orchestra dating from 1970. Programme Note: After the first performance of my chamber orchestra work VOYAGE INTO THE GOLDEN SCREEN (1969) I was very preoccupied with ‘voyaging on’ in the infinity series I had brought to fruition in the second movement of the work: instead of about 1000 notes of the series I wanted to use about 4000 in order to create the potential for further exploration of the many layers and interval combinations of the infinity series. Instead of the pristine progression of the notes and its orchestration in‘Voyage’ I now wanted to intervene: to create melodies lead up to climaxes darken enlighten etc. but all with respect for the continuous flow and the preservation of the special timeless objectivity characteristic of the infinity series. One can perhaps experience the many recurrences of motifs in tempo layers from fast to very slow as a successor to the fractal computer graphics of the eighties. At any rate this ‘Symphony no. 2 in one movement’ (which was the result) became the precursor of the other works of the seventies including my 50-minute long chorally integrated Third Symphony (from 1973-75) which is also based on the infinity series but in addition has incorporated the upper and lower harmonic series and rhythms with ‘Golden’ duration proportions. The Second Symphony lasts about 25 minutes and was given its first performance on13th April 1970 by the Aarhus City Orchestra conducted by Per Dreier. Per Nørgård August 1992

Concerto giocondo e severo (Cheerful and Serious Concerto) Op. 132 for Orchestra by Vagn Holmobe (1977). Programme note Concerto giocondo e severo was composed in 1977 and first performed in the following year on 18th April by the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra during a vist to Gothenburg with Jorma Panula conducting. This work is scored for a much larger orchestra than the other conertos (including a large percussion section) but the orchestration is relatively transparent. It is only occasionally that everybody is on the pitch at the same time. The concerto is in onemovement but is divided into a succession of different tempi and sections that contrast with each other in character. A fortissimo chord from the whole orchestra starts the the slow somewhat tentative introduction. But another fortissimo outbreak is required before strings and the woodwinds together prononunce the beginning of the first rapid section. Knud Ketting

Orchestre
