Music of the Spheres was commissioned by the Yorkshire Building Society Band and first performed by them at the European Brass Band Championships in Glasgow May 2004.The piece reflects the composers fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space in general. The title comes from a theory formulated by Pythagoras that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws he had discovered that govern the ratios of note frequencies of the musical scale. (‘Harmonia’ in Ancient Greek which means scale or tuning rather than harmony - Greek music was monophonic). He also believed that these ratios corresponded to the distances of the sixknown planets from the sun and thatthe planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody (which unfortunately we humans cannot hear). In this work these six notes form the basis of the sections Music of the Spheres and Harmonia. The pieces opens with a horn solo called t = 0 a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bangwhen time and space were created and this is followed by a depiction of the Big Bangitself as the entire universe bursts out from a single point. A slower section follows called The Lonely Planet which is a meditation on the incredible and unlikely set of circumstances which led to the creation of the Earth as a planet that can support life and the constant search for other civilizations elsewhere in the universe. Asteroids and Shooting Stars depicts both the benign and dangerous objects that are flying through space and which constantly threaten our planet and the piece ends with The Unknown leaving in question whether our continually expanding exploration of the universe will eventually lead to enlightenment or destruction.

Gottlieb And Rhapsody Of The Spheres are two works for solo Organ. Gottlieb was first performed in 2000 by Simon Neiminski at St Mary's Cathedral Edinburgh. Rhythmically there is a strong influence of Rave music and harmonically I turned the blues upside down often using minor triads in the left hand with major triads in the right hand.Gottlieb is dedicated to Sydney Gottlieb.'Rhapsody of the Spheres: Reading something John Coltrane said on his album 'A Love Supreme' that 'all vibrations lead to God' got me thinking maybe music is the best form of describing what is going on at an atomic and subatomic level: that the great composersand musicians take you to Heaven rather than try to describe it in words. With that in mind I wrote this piece-a prayer to the Moon and the Stars-where I wanted by using the most majestic instrument of all the organ to describe the beauty of existence. This is a one movement piece slow-fast-slow and is dedicated to my eldest son Sean.'David Heath

In ‘Land of Legends’ German composer Andreas Ludwig (what’s in a name) Schulte takes you along to the fictional world of legends myths and fairy tales. The introduction to the first part (The Castle) describes the majestic contours of the sceneof action. Its instrumentation (horns) immediately makes you imagine being in Medieval spheres. The addition of trenchant copper instruments even gives the part a heroic tinge. After entering through the gate a lot of hustle and bustle appearsto be going on in the courtyard. Pages squires and soldiers are busy attending to their arms. Beer is being brewed flax is being spun cattle are being tended and some craftsmen from neighbouring villages are busily at work. In the upperchamber of the round tower lives an old man (The Old Wizard). He hardly ever comes out and nobody knows exactly what he is doing. It is said that he is engaged in wizardry and magic. It is all very mysterious. There are also festivities some ofthem sober others exuberant. The wedding in the third part is celebrated in a grand manner. With a flourish of trumpets the bride makes her entrance at the hand of her father. Afterwards at the party there is dancing to the music played byminstrels and of course a plentiful banquet follows.

John Tavener 'Agraphon' arranged for soprano timpani and strings. Commissioned by the Athens Concert Hall first performed on 29th October 1995.The music contains two symbolic ideas - the first being the opening series ofintervals which appear to be inexhaustible in their multifaceted symbolism representing the music of the spheres. If the angel's song is indeed one of knowledge they could not choose a better theme of harmony. And then thereis the apparent evil of the endless series of spiralling sixths and sevenths falling without apparent hope of redemption through an eternal geometric series down into a hellish realm.Agraphon must be performed with greatintensity literally at the breaking point of intensity and petrification. For the voice the style alternates between European and classical Indian singing; for example the passage beginning on page 12 is entirelysemi-improvised. The singer must listen to many examples of classical Indian music or else be trained by a master. The music ends fiercely at the incomprehensible clash and union between the Divine and the human.Duration22 minutes. Instrumental parts are available on hire only.

The Secret Language of Film Music-Today musical composition for films is more p...(+)
The Secret Language of Film Music-Today musical composition for films is more popular than ever. In professional and academic spheres media music study and practice are growing; undergraduate and postgraduate programs in media scoring are offered by dozens of major colleges and universities. And increasingly pop and contemporary classical composers are expanding their reach into cinema and other forms of screen entertainment. Yet a search on Amazon reveals at least 50 titles under the category of film music and remarkably only a meager few actually allow readers to see the music itself while none of them examine landmark scores like Vertigo To Kill aMockingbird Patton The Untouchables or The Matrix in the detail provided by Scoring the Screen: The Secret Language of Film Music. This is the first book since Roy M. Prendergast's 1977 benchmark Film Music: A Neglected Art to treat music for motion pictures as a compositional style worthy of serious study. Through extensive and unprecedented analyses of the original concert scores it is the first to offer both aspiring composers and music educators with a view from the inside of the actual process of scoring-to-picture.The core thesis of Scoring the Screen is that music for motion pictures is indeed a language developed by the masters of the craft out of a dramatic and commercial necessity to communicate ideas and emotions instantaneously to an audience. Like all languages it exists primarily to convey meaning. To quote renowned orchestrator Conrad Pope (who has worked with John Williams Howard Shore and Alexandre Desplat among others): “If you have any interest in what music 'means' in film get this book. Andy Hill is among the handful of penetrating minds and ears engaged in film music today.”

Par SPARKE PHILIP. Not Before Time (Il est grand temps) est l?une des deux pièces commandées par Koninklijke Fanfare Kempenbloei Achel (dirigée par Ivan Meylemans) dans le cadre de son programme pour le Concours « World Music Contest 2022», qui s?est tenu à Kerkrade, aux Pays-Bas.
