The Mythology Suite consists of three movements of my Mythology Symphony, which I arranged for large wind ensemble. The arrangements of The Lovely Sirens and Penelope Waits were commissioned by James Ripley and Carthage College for the Carthage Wind Orchestra's 2017 Japan tour. I added Pandora Undone to complete the set; Stephen Squires and the Chicago College of Performing Arts gave the premiere of the entire Suite in February 2017. Movement 1: The Lovely Sirens The Sirens were sea nymphs, usually pictured as part woman and part bird, who lived on a secluded island surrounded by rocks. Their enchanting song was irresistible to passing sailors, who were lured to their deaths as their ships were destroyed upon the rocks. The Lovely Sirens presents three ideas: the Sirens' beautiful song, an unfortunate group of sailors whose course takes them near the island, and the disaster that befalls the sailors. The sailors' peril is represented by the Morse code S.O.S. signal (three dots, three dashes, and three dots--represented musically by short and long rhythms). The S.O.S. signal grows increasingly more insistent and distressed as it becomes obvious that the sailors, smitten with the voices of the Sirens, are headed for their demise. Movement 2: Penelope Waits This quiet movement represents Queen Penelope, the faithful wife of Odysseus, as she patiently waits twenty years for her husband's return from fighting the Trojan Wars. Penelope herself is represented as an oboe. She is accompanied by the ensemble as she keeps at bay the suitors who wish to marry her and inherit her riches. Movement 3: Pandora Undone This movement is, in turns, both lighthearted and serious. The music depicts a young, naive Pandora who, while dancing around her house, spies a mysterious box. She tries to resist opening it, but her curiosity ultimately gets the best of her. When she cracks the lid open and looks inside, all evils escape into the world. Dismayed by what she has done, she looks inside the box once more. She discovers hope still in the box and releases it to temper the escaped evils and assuage mankind's new burden.

Based on the well-known bible text “Sing unto the Lord a new song” (Psalm 96:1-3), this upbeat composition with strong dynamics and flowing block chords alternating with fast-paced polyphony brings across this joyful message and enthuses singers.

Originally conceived for male choir, women’s voices have now been added so that this version for mixed choir presents a further dimension of colour. This version also makes it possible to divide the choir into two groups, one for women and another for men, and to have them sing either together or as separate units.

The version for mixed choir was premiered in Uppsala Cathedral (Sweden) on 26 October 2013, with the Uppsala Cathedral Singers conducted by Ulric Andersson.

Mårten Jansson (b. 1965), elected member of the Föreningen svenska tonsättare (the Society of Swedish Composers), graduated from the Royal College of Music, Stockholm (KHM) with an MFA degree in Music Education, Dalcroze Eurhythmics and Voice. For more than ten years he was the music director and conductor of “Carmen”, one of the most prominent womens’ vocal ensembles in Sweden. He currently teaches choral conducting and music theory as well as giving vocal tuition at the Bolandgymnasiet and Musikskolan in his home town of Uppsala.

AGNI by Bernd Franke is a 17-minute work for Bass Clarinet and Orchestra. Agni is the Hindu god of fire and at the same time the elemental and transformative force inherent in everything. In illustrations, Agni is depicted with seven tongues, which stand for the different aspects of his being: creating, sustaining, purifying, priestly, warlike, devastating, destroying, consuming. In the eponymous concerto for bass clarinet and orchestra, Bernd Franke traces the transformation processes initiated by the divine fire in compositional terms. The work was first performed on 23 November 2019 in Großenhain by Volker Hemken (bass clarinet) and Elbland Philharmonie conducted by Ekkehard Klemm.

My Concerto for Orchestra (2007) is a twenty-minute work in which different sections of the orchestra, as well as individual solos and duos from within the orchestra, are highlighted as the music unfolds. Martin Amlin’s first recital work for Trumpet and Piano brings all the iridescent excitement that has intrigued other performers. Composed for his renowned colleague Terry Everson, Amlin’s sonata pours new wine into old bottles with its three movements titled: 1. Invention, 2. Chaconne, and 3. Moto Perpetuo. The publication provides solo parts for both C and E-flat Trumpet. Composer and pianist Martin Amlin has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Tanglewood Music Center, Massachusetts Cultural Council, Massachusetts Artists Foundation, St. Botolph Club Foundation, and the Massachusetts Council for the Arts. He was a recipient of an ASCAP Grant to Young Composers and has received many ASCAPlus Awards. He has been a resident at Yaddo, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the MacDowell Colony, where he was named a Norlin Fellow.Much of Amlin’s music is characterized by a pungent tonality and energetic rhythms. Here is a free swinging, remarkable chart from a new writer for Sierra. Allan Ganley's reputation and legacy in England drew our attention to this marvelous arrangement of One Morning in May. The arrangement is recorded on the CD June Time (Vocalion), and stands among the best versions out there. Starting with a soft, swinging ensemble, the chart moves into space for blowing for tenor saxophone and trumpet, returning to the initial feel with a wonderful, warm ending. All brass ranges are very moderate. This will be a great addition to any jazz band library. 5-4-4-4.

From the very start, Alexander Wagner had intended to enhance the final, third volume of Kurt Thomas' famous Lehrbuch der Chorleitung during his revision of the work, both with respect to the size as well as to the contents, whereby he incorporated a chapter on recitative conducting. Wagner has now reached his objective. Volume 3, which had previously seemed like an appendix of sorts, now takes its place alongside the two previously published volumes of the new edition as an equal member. The composer writes: The backdrop for this commission was to complement music by the great Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven's scores for string quartet are cornucopias of techniques and musicality. They were certainly not meant for pure entertainment. Ending up with Beethoven's quartet Op. 59 No. 1 as a reference for this piece, I even used elements from this quartet in my own composition. Beethoven's position as a free artist has been of great importance to all following composers. This is of equal inspiration as his music. As a free artist, one has to reflect upon our own time, and not be afraid of allowing reality affect our work. When I was in the middle of writing this piece something horrible happened in my neighborhood. A bomb exploded in Oslo and a killer shot teenagers on an island summer camp. My nation's reputation as a peaceful country to live in was drastically and forever changed. It was hard to compose. Papers and online media were soon filled with horrible pictures from the events. The lead-coloured skies being a recurring sight. The ambiguity in the title reflects both hope and dread. Beethoven's light shines through, strong and full of life! The piece was commissioned by the Engegard Quartet in 2011 and appears the recording String Quartets vol IV: Schubert-Ratkje-Britten-Haydn. A later piece was composed for string orchestra: 'Tale of Lead and Frozen Light' (2014).
