As opposed to the earlier chamber work Nightshade which dealt with extremes of high and low pitches and the chamber orchestra composition Second Nightshade a two-fold piece contrasting darkness/anxiety and light/calm Final Nightshade for full symphony orchestra takes us on a journey in which the forces of dark and light struggle - and co-exist - in a predominantly polyphonic web with brooding undertones. The melodic point-of-departure is not surprisingly to be found in either of the two preceding pieces of the Trilogy but in an older piece Corpus Cum Figuris from 1985. Over the ensuing years I've dreamt on and off of 'doing something' with the opening measures of this older work perhaps even building a new composition on that very simple inward-looking time was ripe and there's a nice nostalgia angle to the idea: Corpus Cum Figuris was the first piece of mine to be

Nighthawks - Harpe Jobert
Creation 04/11/2018 - Cologne (Germany), Philharmonie - Anaïs Gaudemard (har...(+)
Creation 04/11/2018 - Cologne (Germany), Philharmonie - Anaïs Gaudemard (harp) Sponsor Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Philharmonie de Paris Dedication to Anaïs Gaudemard Notice Nighthawks is a work for solo harp. When Anaïs Gaudemard [1] asked me to write this work, she wanted to integrate it into a program on the theme of birds. I immediately thought of the work Nighthawks (1942) - or Night Birds - by the American realist painter Edward Hopper (1882-1967). Inspired by this work, I designed the piece in one piece as a trip to the heart of this painting. Hopper projects there a snapshot of American daily life. The scene takes place at a late hour of the night and several atmospheres emerge from it. Indeed, the eye is at the same time attracted by this dark, deserted, and immaculate street of an American downtown; intrigued by the frozen situation of the four characters inside a brightly colored diner; and hypnotized by the glare of the huge bar window. Contrasting with the darkness of the street, the light from this neon-lit window is striking. It thus separates the two atmospheres of the painting. The view of the spectator through it is from outside to inside the bar. The absence of an exit door gives the impression that the characters are isolated and their solitude is further reinforced by this glass which surrounds the illuminated stage - as if they were under a bell . Inside the diner, a man seen from behind is eating; a couple stand side by side (the man smokes; the woman is dressed in red); a server is busy. We don't know anything about them. What are they doing at such a late hour? Where is the exit? What are they discussing? Do they know each other? I wanted to musically conceive this scene from the viewer's point of view, as if we were caught up, sucked into the very interior of the painting. The introduction - Mysterious, dark - sounds the twelve strokes of midnight and plunges us into the darkness of this typically American street. From this nocturnal atmosphere is born a strange song - almost padded with xylophonic sounds - as if we could not hear it distinctly through the luminous glass which separates the street and the bar. Caught up in this bright light, we pass through the window and gradually return inside the diner by means of a hypnotic loop repeated tirelessly, as if we were entering a state of trance - Hypnotic. It is the underlying tension of this frozen situation of the characters that I wanted to represent in the central passage - Rhythmic and pulsed. Then, we come out of this feeling of hypnosis by passing through the bar window again and rediscover the nocturnal atmosphere of this deserted and immaculate street - Hypnotic - Mysterious. Camille Pepin [1] Creator and dedicatee of the piece Hurry What a simply beautiful work here! Camille Pépin, born in 1990, had a career marked by dance and composition. But we discover here quite simply an artist, who invites us to the contemplation of a work of the painter Edward Hopper. Having worked on composition and orchestration with Thierry Perrine as well as with Thierry Escaich, Guillaume Connesson and Marc-André Dalbavie, she has forged an original language which allows her here to bewitch us both by her music and by contemplation of the painting. We can judge by the interpretation of this piece on YouTube that we will listen to while looking at the painting. Of course, you can also listen to the work as it is: it is sufficient. But with the painting ... Daniel blackstone Music Education n ° 128 (Jan-Feb 2020)

Par . The Real Books are the best-selling jazz books of all time. Since the 1970s, musicians have trusted these volumes to get them through every gig, night after night. The problem is that the books were illegally produced and distributed, without any regard to copyright law, or royalties paid to the composers who created these musical masterpieces. Hal Leonard is very proud to present the first legitimate and legal editions of these books ever produced. You won't even notice the difference, other than all the notorious errors being fixed: the covers and typeface look the same, the song list is nearly identical, and the price for our edition is even cheaper than the original! Every conscientious musician will appreciate that these books are now produced accurately and ethically, benefitting the songwriters that we owe for some of the greatest tunes of all time! Benet Casablancas was inspired by a passage of John Milton?s ?Paradise Lost? and its further interpretation by the Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa in order to name one of his key works Darkness Visible. The versatile use of the Orchestra as well as the great timbral and textural differentiation may prevail as structure to this work. Moreover the way Benet Casablancas formulates the harmonic thought and its involvement in the development of his discourse seem to be a more crucial characteristic of Darkness Visible. This work deepens into the exploration of the unfathomable mystery of the night. It is conceived as a nocturne of big proportions that goes near quiet and rarefied atmospheres but is punctually disturbed by more agitated passages suddenly illuminated by gleams of light.

Four poems sharing a common motif of 'Night' provide the texts for the choral cycle Nocturnes the American Choral Directors Association's commissioned work for its 2005 national convention. For Rilke's atmospheric “Sa nuit d'ete ” several melodic themes are supported by dense colorful harmonies in both the choral and piano parts leading to a climactic section where all are combined and stated simultaneously. Neruda's “Soneto de la Noche ” from his Cien Sonetos de Amor speaks of an eternal love that transcends death while reaffirming life. The a cappella setting of this gorgeous poem is predominantly quiet sereneand folk-like utilizing direct harmonies accompanying long lyrical vocal lines. Agee's wondrous “Sure on this Shining Night” is set much like a song from the American musical theater a genre for which I have held a life-long esteem. Rilke's poignant “Voici le soir” recalls the opening bell sounds and jazz-tinged chords of the first movement and serves as an epilogue quietly concluding this cycle of night songs as darkness descends.

Full Score-Ruders writes: NIGHTSHADE is an instrumental dark-room a grave-yard of low-pitched tight-knitted crawling chords sliced asunder by the cold extremely high positioned movements of the oboe and violin in particular: tones sustained to near-immobility and then scared into startling velocity like geckoes on a Southern garden wall. Shades in the night are pale and gloomy phenomenons to behold; treacherous beauties in the mighty realm of invisibility and blackness. Belladonna (beautiful lady) is the morbid christening of that fearsome variety of flora: the deadly nightshade. The piece is on one hand a study in extreme sonorities; the infrequently usedcontrabass clarinet is being employed along with the contra-bassoon forming the ultra-low foundation of the score and the bottom-register of the French horn and the trombone is set against the serene clarity of high violin and oboe. On the other hand the piece is a tone-poem of sorts on the various associations as they form within the mind of the individual listener when confronted with the very word NIGHTSHADE. Personally I come to think of pale moonlight tombstones the compelling as well as frightening spell of a dark forest. A Study in black the piece has been called.

Par MENDONCA VASCO. 'Terrance Hayes? series of sonnets is an extraordinary collection of poems: his poetry captures the spiralling social and political chaos in America (and the world) in a way no newspaper article or scholarly essay has been able to; his words have the rare quality of clarifying a collective feeling that is messy and confusing, an elusive and disturbing combination of fear, hope, perhaps despair. I have never personally experienced (and probably never will) the reality Hayes writes about: the oppression, danger and ambiguity he reflects upon are alien to my own experience. But I nevertheless felt compelled to create something inspired by his words. To engage - how can you not engage? The first movement of ''A Box of Darkness with a Bird in its Heart'' is a hurtful ostinato with an uneven, organic pulse - not unlike the way we breathe under physical or emotional strain. The second is a quiet, delicate birdsong; its very high melody almost a secret that?s unwillingly shared - followed by an expressive lament. The ending in the low register brings me the image of a viola da gamba played outside in a warm summer night, a distant tale of violence and loss. In the final movement the energy picks up, in a relentless and unforgiving mechanism of pizzicati. This piece was written for the wonderful violinist Diana Tishchenko, and is dedicated to her. Par CASABLANCAS BENET. Shade and Darkness, lasting some 12:30 minutes, was co-commissioned by the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical and the Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada. The work is inspired by Turner's famous painting of the same name, subtitled 'The Night Before the Flood', although this does not imply any programmatic or even less descriptive intention, beyond the composer's admiration for the painter, and for the richness of tones and chiaroscuro, subtlety in the treatment of pictorial matter, and the dynamism and emotional force present in his work, to whose depth John Ruskin alludes: 'Nuance is in Turner, first of all, a beautiful aid to the great impression to be conveyed, but it is neither the source nor the essence of that impression; it is little more than a visible melody... preparing the feelings for the reading of the mysteries of God.' The score, generous in expressive contrasts, explores the ductility and richness of possibilities of the strings, with a very diversified use of textures, densities and colours. The formal arrangement describes a wide ternary arc, consisting of two slow and often static sections - not without ominous foreboding - and a more lively central part, punctuated by occasional turbulence and dazzling flashes of timbre, culminating in a powerful climactic process. In the final bars the four voices of the classical quartet fleetingly emerge, as a tribute to Günter Pichler, founder and member of the Alban Berg Quartet, to whom the score is dedicated, and who conducted the premiere of the work in front of the Joven Orquesta Nacional de España on 24 and 25 June 2014 at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid and in the Patio de los Mármoles del Hospital Real in Granada. / Date parution : 2022-03-15/ Répertoire / Petit Orchestre

Night Dance was written between September 1986 and January 1987 to a commission from David Starobin who gave the first performance on 5 April 1987 at the Wigmore Hall London. It is a miniature tone-poem depicting ascene of an old man sitting in a doorway at dusk. He is playing a guitar and begins by plucking the lowest string as though searching for what he wishes to play. As the music gains momentum it gradually moves upwards by meansof the guitar’s open strings and breaks into a dance. Now it is dark and a nightmarish band of dancers passes by the old guitarist. The dance jerky and uneven develops melodically and harmonically the initial material of thepiece. After a climax the dancers move on - the dance music subsides and a nocturne is heard interrupted periodically by the music of the dance in the distance. Maybe this is not geographical distance but the distance oftime perhaps the whole episode has been mere memories. The piece ends musingly with the motive from which it began.
