Captivated by the playing of famed Franz Liszt pupil Eugen d'Albert during the 1883-1884 concert season, Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) began work on Concert Fantasia. After an arduous composition process, on which the composer himself remarked, I stopped playing around and came up with something... but it still sounded too poor and unoriginal... Tchaikovsky laid aside Concert Fantasia and began sketching out his Third Orchestral Suite. He eventually returned to and finished Concert Fantasia in June of 1884, with the surprising addition of the second movement Contrastes. Originally composed as the first movement of his Third Orchestral Suite but ultimately rejected, Tchaikovsky reservedly added it as a second movement to Concert Fantasia. While recognizing and wishing to use the movement for its own merits, he still harbored doubts and added an alternative solo cadenza to the end of the first movement in case Contrastes was to be omitted. The Russian Musical Society under the direction of Max Erdmannsdörfer premiered the work in 1855. In the two decades after its debut, Concert Fantasia received many performances but disappeared from the repertoire until it underwent a revival in the latter part of the 20th century. The great violinist Yehudi Menuhin commissioned Bartok for a new work, and Bartok responded with the Sonate. When first Menuhin saw the work, he deemed it unplayable! Upon further inspection, the composition began to make sense, and Menuhin would ultimately hail it as the most important composition for violin alone since Bach. Similarly, Dejour - captivated by the Sonate - would have grave doubts about transcribing such a virtuosic masterpiece for violin for his own instrument, the guitar. He, too, came to realize that the Sonate could well transfer to the guitar, with its chord progressions, contrapuntal motion, and more. While still demanding of virtuosity, the Sonate is now available as a masterpiece for guitar.

This is the full text of the speech made by Benjamin Britten when he was presented with the first Aspen Award at Aspen, Colorado, on 31st July, 1964. The hit song “Levitating†by the English singer Dua Lipa was written in Jamaica during a session for her second studio album: Future Nostalgia. It is a stirring dance tune featuring characteristics from various genres, such as power pop and electro disco. It was received with much acclaim, and compared with music by the likes of Debbie Harry, Katy Perry, Kate Nash and Kylie Minogue. Arranger Seb Skelly also fell for this catchy track. He arranged it for brass quintet with an optional drum part, which will undoubtedly induce some dance vibes!

The 24 minutes long work consists of a single enormous movement (...fantasia...) and a coda containing two parts (coda: recitativo ed epilogo). The range of tone colour in the composition is undoubtedly the key element in its effectiveness, Kurtág luxuriates in the possibilities offered by the two solo instruments and the huge orchestra. His instrumentation is magical, the exceptionally big percussion section is enriched with the incomparable sound of a new instrument, the steel drum. The concertante was premiered in 2003 in Copenhagen by Hiromi Kikuchi, Ken Hakii and the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Schonwand. In 2006, this work won the University ofLouisville Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition.The performance rights of the violin and viola solo parts have been reserved for Hiromi Kikuchi and Ken Hakii.

Scaramouche continues Sparke's series of works that highlights the Italian theatre tradition of commedia dell'arte. Like its predecessors Pantomime and Harlequin, Scaramouche draws on the contrasting moods of pathos and comedy characterized by the symbolic happy/sad masks of European theatre. A slow, expressive ballad followed by a spirited vivace allows the composer to exploit both the lyrical and technical sides of the instrument, and the soloist to display its full capabilities.
