Max Bruch succeeded in composing an impressive setting of the well known Advent text, O Heiland, reiss die Himmel auf (O Saviour, tear open the heavens). Compositionally it is extremely sophisticated in its construction; Bruch combines both the choir and orchestra in a powerfully expressive and moving portrayal of mankind waiting for the coming of the Saviour. Following the premiere of the work in 1869 it was celebrated as Bruch's most important choral work, but later it fell largely into oblivion. Almost 150 years after it was composed, for the first time a critical-scholarly edition is now available to the public. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1036400.

The second movement of the cantata Gott, man lobet dich in der Stille BWV 120 became particularly well-known through its re-use in the Credo of the Mass in B minor. The cantata is one of six surviving cantatas for inaugurations of the Leipzig Town Council from the pen of Johann Sebastian Bach. Although the autograph manuscript score can be dated to around 1742, it is not known precisely which town council inauguration the work was performed at. The cantata O God, what glut of care and pain BWV 58, which Bach subtitled Dialogus and wrote for the Sunday after New Year, limits itself accordingly to the dialog couple consisting of soprano and bass; further soloists or a choir are not required. In the framing movements, the dialog takes on the form of a chorale arrangement: the soprano presents a cantus firmus whose words are consolingly commented on by the bass. Both the expansive chorale arrangements leave room for an aria which is framed by two recitatives. The cantata was composed for the Sunday after New Year 1727, but the received form is from a subsequent performance that took place six or seven years later. For this performance, Bach not only expanded the instrumentation but also replaced an entire aria. Later, he assigned the cantata to his annual cycle of chorale cantatas, probably due to its high proportion of chorales; this Sunday was missing in that annual cycle as there was no Sunday between New Year and Epiphany in 1725. Third version, first performed around 1747 in Leipzig. First version available under 35.304/00. The St. Mark Passion, which probably originated in the first decade of the 18th century, by a composer known until now only as Kaiser, is only preserved in various copies. It occupies a prominent place in Bach's music library as the only music for Passion by another composer which he performed several times, usually in different forms. For the young Bach in Weimar this St. Mark Passion was a didactic piece for learning the art of the modern narrative recitative; as the Leipzig Thomaskantor he also performed it (1726). The present edition reconstructs the third version, first performed in Leipzig (1747), in which Bach inserted seven arias from Handel's famous Brockes-Passion. Only in this pasticcio did a direct encounter occur between him and his famous compatriot in London, a real encounter which Bach longed for, but which never came about. First version, first performed in Weimar around 1713 by J. S. Bach; from Bach's music library. Third version available under 35.502/00. Version of a performance at the Weimar court from around 1713 by J.S. Bach; from his library of music. It has been proven that J. S. Bach studied the St. Mark Passion of Reinhard Keiser frequently and intensively. At least three performances of this work verify this fact. A new Carus edition presents the 'Weimar' version, since the material is almost complete. Keiser's Passion is well suited for 'normal' conditions, with regard to length, difficulty and scoring. In every respect a rewarding representation of the Passion. Kirchenmusikalische Mitteilungen 3 / 1999. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3530400.

With a total duration of about 30 minutes, Schubert's Mass in B flat major (D 324), written in 1815, is considerably longer than Mozart's and Haydn's classical Brevis masses, and its large instrumental ensemble with strings, woodwinds, brass and timpani even gives it a clearly solemn character. Overall, Schubert was inspired by the late Haydn style of the symphonic mass (e.g., the division into six large movements, the omission of arias for the vocal soloists who are instead juxtaposed with the choir, singing short passages either singly or as a group) without, of course, achieving its temporal expansion. This is a representative, musically appealing work that excels with its multi-layered, detailed text treatment. It is, therefore, suitable for special occasions and the high feasts of the church year and can be mastered well by experienced church choirs. Charles Gounod composed this Requiem under the impact of the death of his four-year-old grandson, Maurice. According to information handed down, while finishing the details of this work he was overtaken by death. It was published posthumously in various constellations by his pupil, Henri Busser, but the only complete version from the pen of Gounod is the version for large orchestra, which is published here for the first time in a critical edition. Gounod's Requiem, unlike many contemporary settings of the Mass of the Dead, is not characterized by darkness and terror. Rather, with all of its trepidation - expressed through a marked chromaticism - an atmosphere of hopeful expectation, of trust in the grace and equity of the divine judge predominates. This confidence finds its expression in the choice of the fundamental key of C major, which is rather unusual for a requiem. The work was given an impressive performance on the occasion of the first anniversary of Gounod's death in the Parisian church of Sainte-Madeleine under the direction of Gabriel Fauré and it was highly acclaimed by the contemporary press. An unknown work from the so-called Buckeburger Bach, which at first was ascribed unjustly to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The story of the Suffering of the Lord is examined from a different perspective. Pilgrims have undertaken a journey to the Holy Land and when they arrive they are informed by a hermit of the suffering and death of Christ. An additional figure, an angel, lends this representation of the Passion a heightened form for communicating the importance of the suffering of Christ.. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3410400.
