Bach composed the cantata O God, from heaven look on us BWV 2 for the 2nd Trinity Sunday 1724 as the second cantata of the annual cycle of chorale cantatas. It is based on Martin Luther's rewriting of Psalm 112. The opening movement is one of a group of cantata opening movements which are not concertante but kept entirely in the motet style, with the instruments serving only to reinforce the singers. The archaic character of this movement is heightened by the addition of a trombone quartet. The concertante style is all the more significant in the first aria for contralto, solo violin and continuo. The first secco recitative represents a special feature: two fragments of the chorale are woven as arioso into the recitative, both in text and melody; futhermore, they are also taken up canonically by the continuo. When Joseph Haydn assumed the position as music director of the Court of Esterhazy in 1766, following the death of his predecessor, Gregor Joseph Werner, he began by composing his first and most extensive Missa solemnis. The title Missa Cellensis (later also known as the Cecilian Mass) and the date of an autograph score suggest that this work was probably commissioned by Prince Nicolaus Esterhazy for the 600th anniversary of the pilgrimage church Mariazell located in Styria. With regard to the scoring as well as form, this Mass is still in the tradition of the late baroque number mass. In contrast to previous mixed versions based on various sources, the new edition follows the authentic (original) version using the most reliable sources. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app. Score available separately - see item CA.4060400.

Johann Gottlieb Naumann, who today is becoming increasingly well known, achieved recognition during his lifetime as a composer of operas, among them the first Swedish national opera, Gustaf Wasa. In addition he wrote a large number of sacred compositions for the Court of Dresden, where he was employed for many years, including the present Missa in D minor, which was still performed well into the 20th century. This work, probably composed for Christmas in 1794, displays a decidedly pastoral character in the Gloria and Agnus Dei and moreover, is distinguished by charming solo woodwind parts.

The Sinfonia in D major (BR-WFB C 8) was probably composed in the mid-1750s during Bach's tenure as organist and Director Musices in Halle. Evidence shows that it was used as the instrumental introduction to the Whitsun cantata Dies ist der Tag (BR-WFB F 13 / Fk 85). However, this is not a piece characterized by the church style, hence a separate performance in a secular context is not only possible, but was probably intended by the composer. Contemporary criticism saw in Rheinberger's Stabat Mater op. 16 from 1864 one of the most beautiful works of this type which the present time has to offer. Distinguished through its breadth of conception and its noble tonal effect, with its rich polyphony it reaches the masterpieces of the old Italian school. In the expressive choral movements rich-sounding homophonic passages are combined with sections worked out in strict polyphony. The sustained songlike solo pieces are of a profound expression. Thanks to the false attribution to Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 219) of the cantata for St. Michael's Day Siehe! es hat uberwunden der Lowe TVWV 1:1328 by Georg Philipp Telemann, one of Telemann's works experienced an unusually early renaissance. In 1884 the cantata was published in the Bach-Gesamtausgabe (Complete Edition) and from then onwards enjoyed some fame as an apocryphal Bach cantata. Alfred Durr was able to identify the work as a composition by Telemann in the 1950s. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3913600.

In 1726 Johann Sebastian Bach performed a series of cantatas by his Meiningen cousin Johann Ludwig, then continued this series with his own works, but remained faithful to the textual models used his cousin: a Meiningen cycle of texts by an unknown author from the early 18th century. All these texts share the characteristic of including two quotations from the bible: one from the Old Testament at the beginning, and another from the New Testament in the middle. These cantatas include Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben BWV 102. The opening chorus in several sections is one of Bach's masterpieces of choral composition. The cantata is also one of those works on which Bach's later reputation was based: performances are documented from 1776 in Hamburg and in Berlin by Zelter's Sing-Akademie from 1813 onwards. In 1830 it was one of the very first cantatas by Bach to appear in print. Score available separately - see item CA.3110200.

The first performance of this cantata, which belongs to Bach's third annual cycle of cantatas, took place on the 2nd day of Christmas in 1725. With the exception of the closing chorale, with a text from 1711 by Georg Christian Lehms, the text of the cantata refers to St. Stephan, the first martyr of the New Testament and patron saint whose name day occurs on 26 December. In a dialog between the Soul (Soprano) and Jesus (bass) the struggle with sin is recounted respectively in two expressive arias arias. The entire orchestra is involved in the first movement as well as in in the closing chorale together with the choir.

The Jena organist Johann Nikolaus Bach, the eldest son of Johann Christoph Bach, was long believed to have been the xomposer of the Missa brevis Allein Gott in der Hoh sei Ehr, but this is now known to be a work by the Meiningen Court Kapellmeister Johann Ludwig Bach. The only composition undoubtedly by Johann Nikolaus Bach is the boisterous student music Der Jenaische Wein- und Bierrufer. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3070100.

For the new editions of the great Schubert Masses the editors have once again thoroughly and subtly reexamined the source material. This has resulted in historical-critical Urtext editons which differ from previous editions in many passages: these are major differences but many obvious details, especially dynamic and articulation are corrected (which has been a trouble spot in the Schubert Edition). The scholarly editions present the musical text in a manner which furthers historically informed performance practice. Score available separately - see item CA.4066000.

Telemann's Missa brevis on Allein Gott in der Hoh sei Ehr is one of his eleven surviving Latin Missae breves based on church hymns. The motet-like composition calls for a mixed choir accompanied by a basso continuo, reinforced by colla-parte instruments. However, the mass can also be performed solely with an organ accompaniment. The motet O Jesu, te invocamus arose through an adaptation of the text of the final chorus of Joseph Haydn's Applausus, a festive cantata composed in 1768. For church music performances, the Latin text O Jesu, te invocamus was closely attached to the primary text and often only single words were replaced. The German alternative text Allmachtiger, Preis dir und Ehre, for which there was neither a biblical nor a liturgical basis, was added to the Latin text. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5199300.

Since its first complete performance in 1868 in the Cathedral of Bremen, Brahms's Ein deutsches Requiem is, without question, one of the key works in the history of the oratorio. The reputation of the work is based not only on its unusually concentrated musical structure, but also on the original conception of the text: Brahms assembled important passages from both the Old and New Testaments in Luther's translation so that thoughts on sorrow and consolation would obviously refer to one another. In contrast to many other oratorios of the 19th century Brahms places the choir, the voice of the community, in the center of this interdenominational celebration of the dead. In 1827, shortly after a stay with Thibaut in Heidelberg, Tu es Petrus was composed, an echo of his contact with the style of Palestrina. Mendelssohn himself considered the work, which uses and artful and strictly contrapuntal development of the motif, the most successful piece of that year.
