| Ed Hughes: Le Voyage Dans
La Lune: Orchestra: Score Orchestra [Sheet music] University Of York Music Press
'Le Voyage Dans La Lune is a continuous orchestral score of approximately 14 min...(+)
'Le Voyage Dans La Lune is a continuous orchestral score of approximately 14 minutes comprising two outer fast sections and a slower inner section of a dream-like character. The work is directly inspired by the film Le Voyage Dans La Lune (1902) written and directed by the pioneering French film-maker Georges Méliès. Méliès was influenced by 19th century interests in science and discoveries as well as the science fiction of Jules Verne. At the same time his work seems fantastic surreal and satirical. Some critics point out an underlying critique of colonial adventuring. The plot centres on a group of astronomers who decide tolaunch a rocket to the moon containing a handful of their number. They reach the moon (famously landing on the moon?s face) and then encounter a strange race of aliens whom they battle and destroy. The return to earth involves a dramatic descent a plunge into the ocean and then celebratory dancing. The film inhabits a surreal and dream-like space and uses an idiosyncratic visual language which transforms reality. This inspired an active musical response in my own score which is by turns abrupt smooth lyrical and violent and expresses something of the strange shifting surfaces and multiple and layered tempos evident in the film. The canons in the horns in the first scene reflect the intense arguments of the astronomers as they consider the project. The slower inner section is inspired by the scenes of the industrial City viewed from its rooftops by the astronomers. It also expresses the wonder of the astronomers as they see the earth rise from the perspective of the moon after their arrival there. The music of the final section is in places conflicted reflecting the violent encounters with the moon?s inhabitants. It moves into a more harmonious phase at the close to match the celebrations upon the astronomers? return from their adventuring. The music could be considered to be a surreal mini-opera

Mastering Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar. The Hawaiian word for slack key guitar, k? h??alu, means to ?loosen the key? or retune some of the strings to create a harmonious sound with an open or alternate tuning. Slack key is a fingerpicking style characterized by strong alternating bass lines played with the thumb. While slack key can be played on any guitar, most players prefer a nylon- or steel-stringed acoustic instrument. This book presents 25 intermediate to advanced traditional and original tunes in the Hawaiian slack key style. Melodies are often harmonized in sixths or thirds played with or without double stops. Techniques like syncopated bass lines, hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, and harmonics are tastefully employed to evoke the images of ocean breezes, swaying palms, hula dancers and white sandy beaches. The author writes, ?Unless you grew up playing slack key, it?s hard to get from the material presented in most books and DVDs to a fluid, play-it-your-own-way style.? This book seeks to reveal the insights the author has gleaned from studying and jamming with some of the giants of the slack key style, and help you develop a style all your own. Includes access to online audio tracks of all 25 relaxing but challenging Hawaiian slack key tunes.

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa in 1451. His father was a wool merchant. Originally he seemed destined to follow in his father?s footsteps and thus sailed the oceans to countries as far apart as Iceland and Guinea. In 1476 his ship was sunk during a battle off the coast of Portugal. Columbus saved his own life by swimming to shore. In 1484 he conceived the idea of sailing to the Indies via a westward sea route but it was only in 1492 that he was able to realize this plan. On this first voyage he was in command of three ships: the flag-ship called the Santa Maria the Pinta and the Ni?a. From Spain Columbus sailed via the Canary Islands to the Bahamas whichhe sighted on October 12th 1492. Without being aware of it Columbus discovered the ?New World? ? he thought he had landed in the eastern part of Asia. The motif from Dvoøák?s 9th Symphony ?Aus der neuen Welt? forms a little counterfeit history at this point in the composition. After this first voyage Columbus was to undertake another three long voyages to America. These voyages were certainly not entirely devoid of misfortune. More than once he was faced with shipwreck mutiny and the destruction of settlements he had founded. After Columbus had left for Spain from Rio Belen in 1503 he beached his ships on the coast of Jamaica. The crew were marooned there and it was only after a year that Columbus succeeded in saving his men and sailing back to Spain with them. In the music the misunderstanding about which continent Columbus discovered in his lifetime resounds for does this part in the composition not contain Asiatic motifs? Poor Columbus! In 1506 the famous explorer died in Valladolid.

Study Score No. 127-Charles Fussel's Three Processionals for Orchestra.Three Processionals is drawn from ideas contained in an earlier work by the composer Voyages based on the poetry of HartCrane.'In this work I was interested in connecting Hart Crane's use of sea images as a basic vocabulary for his cycle of love poems with Debussy's orchestral sea poem La Mer. The third processional concludes with adirect quote from Debussy. Hart Crane's poems in their profound concentrated language first warn the child that his beautiful and joyous seashore games touch a vast ocean whose depths are cruel And in the following poem loveitself is the great force which sweeps over and moves every aspect of life. To survive this 'tidal wedge' is a fearful and exhilarating struggle and we are frequently 'over-taken' by its power plus the knowledge of ourlimits'. - Charles Fussel

Work for High Voice Alto Flute Horn Harp and Viola. Text: TS Eliot.Quoting Wood: 'I had for many years wanted to set Marina and the opportunity came to start work on it in mid August 1988. About a year later havingcompleted in the meantime the Horn Trio Opus 29 and the Cantata Opus 30 I turned back to the drafts of Marina and completed it on 10 September 1989. It is dedicated to the memory of my daughter who was murdered in Bavaria on 10September 1988.Marina is the heroine of Shakespeare’s Pericles a play remarkable for one of the most moving of all Shakespeare’s recognition scenes a dramatic situation which never failed to draw out his deepest expressionof feeling. This is the re-meeting of an ageing father with his long-lost daughter born at sea during the storm in which her mother is thought to have died and long believed to be dead herself. Eliot transforms the twocharacter’s mutual recognition into a transfigured mediation and surrounds it with a wealth of mainly marine imagery. In the words of Helen Gardener these images are: The prelude to a moment of ecstatic recognition. The voyagein Marina discovers in the ocean anisland and sees again a beloved face. Its theme is not the immortality of the soul but resurrection.

Jazz / Partition /
