For a Hungarian composer, writing music set to the poems of Attila Jozsef is no small feat. In this series, Gyorgy Kurtag (* 1926) took on this immense challenge in a unique way even within his own oeuvre: the loneliness of the unaccompanied, single voice line simultaneously evokes the musical world of Hungarian folk songs or even 17th-century monody. The poems - rather the fragments, the seeds of poetry abandoned by the poet - capture strong, realistic images and human situations that are characteristic of Attila Jozsef. As he is wont to do with his compositions, Kurtag transforms these poetic images into equally unforgettable musical images, drawing an atmosphere of contemplation, despair, boredom, happiness, and fear of death with just a few sounds. This composition was premiered on October 26, 1982 in Budapest by Adrienne Csengery, the recipient of the work-s dedication. (Hungaroton HCD 31821).

Nuptial Scene was commissioned by the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra in cooperation with the city of Jerusalem for the celebration of the fourth Testimonium, a festival to preserve Jewish heritage. The work was written in September, 1975, and premiered in Jerusalem in February, 1976, with the Jerusalem Symphony, Juan Pablo Izquierdo conducting, and Adi Etzion as soloist. It is dedicated to Recha Freier, the originator and prime mover of the festival. Nuptial Scene is based on a simple medieval poem of prenuptial instruction. Part of it is in Catalan and part in Hebrew. The poem originated in Catalonia, where a highly developed Jewish community existed until the expulsion of 1492. A mother is instructing her daughter in the ways and strategies of marriage and rejoicing with a new song for a new bride. When I initially planned the setting for this lovely poem, I realized that the age of the daughter would be about twelve, for girls in that historical period were married at puberty. This set in motion a scheme for the composition, since my oldest daughter was thirteen at that time, and I used her psyche to give me direction. When a girl of twelve or thirteen thinks of a wedding, she is completely captivated by its frills -- the dress, the party, the dancing. In her imagination, the reality of a husband or any kind of domestic responsibility would be nonexistent. Therefore, during the mother's ardent pleas, instructions, admonitions, and even innuendos, the daughter's mind wanders and dreams of dancing. Musically, the rather straight, somber rhythm and melody of the song are interrupted by an independent, faster dance speed of the bongos and by scattered fragments of an actual medieval Spanish-Jewish dance. At the point where the mother speaks of sensuous marital problems, she herself becomes excited, and in a nostalgic, dreamlike spirit -- with the use of improvised melodic lines for which only the gestural outlines are given -- she goes into a kind of rapturous trance. The daughter, however, seems unmoved, and she falls asleep. The mother calms down, puts her head on the daughter's shoulder, and quietly muses, then also closes her eyes. --Samuel Adler  .Nuptial Scene was commissioned by the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra in cooperation with the city of Jerusalem for the celebration of the fourth “Testimoniumâ€, a festival to preserve Jewish heritage. The work was written in September, 1975, and premiered in Jerusalem in February, 1976, with the Jerusalem Symphony, Juan Pablo Izquierdo conducting, and Adi Etzion as soloist.  It is dedicated to Recha Freier, the originator and prime mover of the festival.Nuptial Scene is based on a simple medieval poem of prenuptial instruction. Part of it is in Catalan and part in Hebrew. The poem originated in Catalonia, where a highly developed Jewish community existed until the expulsion of 1492. A mother is instructing her daughter in the ways and strategies of marriage and rejoicing with a “new song†for a “new brideâ€.When I initially planned the setting for this lovely poem, I realized that the age of the daughter would be about twelve, for girls in that historical period were married at puberty. This set in motion a scheme for the composition, since my oldest daughter was thirteen at that time, and I used her psyche to give me direction. When a girl of twelve or thirteen thinks of a wedding, she is completely captivated by its frills — the dress, the party, the dancing. In her imagination, the reality of a husband or any kind of domestic responsibility would be nonexistent. Therefore, during the mother’s ardent pleas, instructions, admonitions, and even innuendos, the daughter’s mind wanders and dreams of dancing. Musically, the rather straight, somber rhythm and melody of the song are interrupted by an independent, faster dance speed of the bongos and by scattered fragments of an actual medieval Spanish-Jewish dance. At the point where the mother speaks of sensuous marital problems, she herself becomes excited, and in a nostalgic, dreamlike spirit — with the use of improvised melodic lines for which only the gestural outlines are given — she goes into a kind of rapturous trance. The daughter, however, seems unmoved, and she falls asleep. The mother calms down, puts her head on the daughter’s shoulder, and quietly muses, then also closes her eyes.—Samuel Adler .

Scheibe’s three sonatas for flute (or violin) and obbligato harpsichord were published by Haffner in the late 1750’s, but were probably composed much earlier; they contain a significant quantity of elaborate imitative writing that is out of character with Scheibe’s later music. Although rooted in the same tradition as the sonatas for flute and obbligato harpsichord by J.S. Bach, C.P.E Bach, and composers at Berlin court of Frederick the Great, these are more substantial works, each having four movements in the traditional slow-fast-slow-fast scheme. For the most part they are trio sonatas, the right hand of the harpsichord acting as the second treble voice, but several movements feature idiomatic writing for the keyboard. Also interesting is the large amount of ornamentation called for, particularly in the harpsichord part. While Scheibe disapproved of the excessive embellishments that Bach actually wrote into his melody lines, these sonatas are nonetheless heavily ornamented, albeit through the insertion of notational symbols; in addition to turns and mordents, Scheibe uses no less than three different trill symbols!

Choral singing, together with organ music, was considered in the 18th and 19th centuries the church-music form of expression per se. So, choral singing and choral music played a dominant role in the 19th century for the Bach revival. Though in many places the political and social upheavals of the Napoleonic era brought some traditional musical institutions to an end, the St. Thomas School with its music boarding school at Leipzig was able to hold its ground and - thanks to a lengthy reorganizational process - dovetail with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, which had in turn arisen from a middle-class society. For the 800th anniversary in 2012 of the Leipzig St. Thomas Choir, a symposium was devoted to the institutional and musical transformation of choral traditions during this time period. The volume presents the results of this conference in an expanded and revised form: Examined from various perspectives are performance-practice aspects, such as the instruments available, the age at which the voice breaks, or the changes in vocal style, and discussed are institutional questions such as the conducting by prefects, the autonomous self-education, or the St. Thomas students' choice of repertoire.Institutionen, Klangideale und Repertoires im Umbruch.

Fresh from the loss of his oldest daughter Maria Mahler, and knowing he had a serious heart condition, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) crafted Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) in the years 1908 and 1909. The first performance took place on November 20, 1911 at the Tonhalle in Munich, conducted by Bruno Walter. It encompasses six settings of old Chinese poems, four of them by the Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai, loosely translated into German by Hans Bethge. Conscious of his own mortality, Mahler filled his orchestral song cycle with themes of resignation, fading beauty, and autumn loneliness. The last song, roughly the same length as the previous five movements combined, serves as a sprawling, yet deeply personal farewell to both love and life. Instrumentation: 3(3rd dPicc)+Picc.3(3rd dEH).2+BCl+Eb.3(3rd dCBsn: 4.3.3.1: Timp.Perc(4-5): 2Hp.Clst.Mand: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Soli T, A (or Bar). Movements: 1. Das Trinklied vom Jammer der Erde (The Drinking Song of Earth's Sorrow); 2. Der Einsame im Herbst (Autumn Loneliness); 3. Von der Jugend (Youth); 4. Von der Schönheit (Beauty); 5. Der Trunkene im Fruhling (Wine in Spring); 6. Der Abschied (The Farewell). Reprint edition.

From the music of the Buena Vista Social Club to Gloria Estefan, the lyrical melodies and infectious rhythms of Cuban music have become embedded in U.S. culture. With Caminemos con Jesús / Let Us Walk with Jesus, composer Tony Alonso presents a groundbreaking collection of liturgical music that calls on his own Cuban musical heritage to provide new ways of singing the liturgy in Spanish, English or bilingually. The first project of its kind, Caminemos con Jesús not only utilizes rich Cuban idioms but also explores what style and musical form can teach us about praying together across cultural and linguistic boundaries. The dynamic call-and-response form that is a hallmark of traditional Cuban music makes these songs especially compelling choices for bilingual worship, allowing assemblies to learn, internalize, and pray easily in both Spanish and English. “Qué AlegrÃa Cuando Me Dijeron / I Rejoiced When I Heard Them Say†uses the words of the psalm as a rhythmic mantra, creating a fresh and engaging way to gather as the Body of Christ. “LetanÃa a la Madre de las Américas / Litany of Mary of The Americas,†invokes the Mary of many names and nations with a simple yet strong response that will enliven Marian feasts throughout the year. The gentle simplicity of “Tres Guajiros / Three Peasants†re-imagines the story of the Magi as humble peasants bringing gifts of the land to honor the newborn Jesus. Also, in this collection and for the first time in published form, is Gloria Estefan’s “Caridad,†a powerful and poetic prayer to Our Lady of Charity, the patroness of Cuba. All of the pieces of this collection focus on the importance of bringing the voices of the assembly to the forefront while the arrangements are skillfully crafted to be accessible to musicians of all abilities. In addition to the spiral-bound edition, individual octavos, and flute and brass parts, Caminemos con Jesús offers a special edition featuring parts for guitar, percussion and other instruments central to Cuban music. The studio recording is a stunning source of prayer and inspiration, produced in Miami by Grammy Award winner Juan Delgado and featuring some of the finest Cuban-American musicians today. GIA Publications, Inc. is committed to responding to the rich diversity of the contemporary Church. With Caminemos con Jesús, we offer you our very best bilingual music for the liturgical year. “The music of my father’s Cuban homeland has been the language of my heart for as long as I can remember. These songs infuse that rich tradition with the unique sabor of my own experience as a Cuban-American in a distinctly liturgical shape that I hope will inspire others in their daily camino con Jesús.†–Tony Alonso Featuring “Live Mercy, Be Holy / Vive la Misericordia, Vive la Santidad,†the 2020 Los Angeles Religious Education Congress theme song! William Wordsworth's reflection of a time gone by acknowledges past heartaches while creating a dream world where beautiful memories reign. As the voices subtly rise and fall to trace a distant rainbow, an ethereal piano accompaniment glistens above. Then together, they soar to new heights to “find strength in what remains behind.† .

This new piece from composer George Sweet is a delightful combination of Scotland the Brave and Amazing Grace. Each tune on its own is wonderful, but in Sweet's setting, they are masterfully layered to reflect the composer's Scottish-American heritage. This presentation of a Scottish melody with Americana-inspired harmonies is a stunning example of compositional craft.Bravery and Grace is a setting of the unofficial Scottish national anthem, Scotland the Brave. While the melody is taken from Scotland the Brave, the accompaniment and harmony both have a “Western Americana†feel, reminiscent of composers like Roy Harris and Aaron Copland.  This combination of a Scottish melody with American harmony is a reflection of the composer’s Scottish-American Heritage. The piece begins with a fragment of Scotland the Brave presented in a lush and reflective context. The main theme is performed in full by the upper voices at m. 9. The middle voices perform the material at m. 17, and the lower voices perform it again at m. 33. This results in a loud passage representing pipers at m. 46. The traditional spiritual Amazing Grace appears suddenly at m. 51 in a somewhat polytonal setting. This is, once again, reminiscent of practices of the aforementioned American composers.  After this lyrical presentation, a fragment of the main theme returns at m. 66. This is followed by a broad restatement of the theme at m. 70 and a brisk conclusion with a final flair of polytonality.
