Dragonetti's Concerto in C major is a charming and accessible three-movement wor...(+)
Dragonetti's Concerto in C major is a charming and accessible three-movement work for the good intermediate bassist. The first movement is longer than the other two movements combined and is similar to Cimador's Concerto in G major in terms of structure and level of difficulty. This new edition for double bass and piano is in orchestral tuning and includes two double bass parts - one edited and corrected by David Heyes and a second copy which is a newly typset version of Dragonetti's original wrong notes and all! The music is lively and rhythmic dramatic and lyrical and this new edition brings this long forgotten work back to life. There are few technical challenges butmuch to enjoy particularly in the orchestral register of the instrument and this is ideal as both a study work and also for the concert hall. Few dynamics were included in the original manuscript and editorial ones have been added in brackets []. Wrong notes and missing accidentals have been added which can be compared between the two solo parts and a new piano accompaniment which is both lively and supportive has been created for this first edition.

Estudio de Estilo-The life and work of Sabicas contradicts the widespread idea that you have to be Andalusian to play flamenco. Sabicas an exceptional guitarist and composer in the history of flamenco lived most of his life in America. This long 'exile' explains without doubt why Sabicas was the first flamenco guitarist essentially playing solo concerts. His large concert discography exceeds that of Paco de LucÃa and Manolo Sanlúcar. This is one of two volumes that focus on Sabicas varied works. This volume (Temas De Concierto) is focused on Sabicas works inspired by the Iberian folklore or some marginal forms of flamenco repertoire. With their relatively short lengths and onlymoderately-difficult piano parts they give the thrill of full-scale performance with significantly less investment than would be otherwise possible with longer works. Concerto giocondo e severo (Cheerful and Serious Concerto) Op. 132 for Orchestra by Vagn Holmobe (1977). Programme note Concerto giocondo e severo was composed in 1977 and first performed in the following year on 18th April by the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra during a vist to Gothenburg with Jorma Panula conducting. This work is scored for a much larger orchestra than the other conertos (including a large percussion section) but the orchestration is relatively transparent. It is only occasionally that everybody is on the pitch at the same time. The concerto is in onemovement but is divided into a succession of different tempi and sections that contrast with each other in character. A fortissimo chord from the whole orchestra starts the the slow somewhat tentative introduction. But another fortissimo outbreak is required before strings and the woodwinds together prononunce the beginning of the first rapid section. Knud Ketting

Instrumental CelloLid.com
If Bach Was A Cellist-The purpose of the series if Bach was a cellist is to live...(+)
If Bach Was A Cellist-The purpose of the series if Bach was a cellist is to live the fantasy that everything Bach wrote he wrote for the cello. The concerto in D minor (BWV 1043) for two violins string orchestra and continuo by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) is one of his most loved works. Indeed the slow movement may be one of the most popular and loved pieces in the instrumental literature. Traditionally it is believed to have been written in Köthen where he held the position of 'fürstlischer Kapellmeister' from 1717-1723 a town that saw the birth of the Brandenburg concertos and the solo works for violin and cello. The Dorian church mode (the absent Bflat in the key of Dminor) would also speak for the younger Bach. Recent research however has shown that the orchestral parts carefully written out by Bach himself and found among the papers of his son Carl Philip Emanuel date from around 1730. The sophistication of the composition also speaks for a later date than Köthen. The original score has been lost.Always in need of concert material for his 'Collegium Musicus' in Leipzig Bach made a version of the present concerto for two harpsichords (BWV 1062). The original key was transposed to C minor so that the top note would not exceed a D but remain within the range of a standard harpsichord. Another C minor concerto (BWV 1060) for two harpsi-chords often heard in an arrangement from the 1920's for violin and oboe by Max Schneider and Max Seiffert speaks for two concertos in D minor for two violins by Bach. When arranging an orchestral score for the pianoforte one has to remember that a double-bass sounds an octave lower than notated. This is a welcomed fact when dealing with two instruments that play the original solo parts an octave down. At the same time for a transcription of this kind the ambition must be to avoid the cello soloists playing in octaves with the violin tutti parts - which is what would happen were they to share the same material. This ambition made a piano reduction

Score and Parts-Wallingford Riegger (1885-1961) was an American cellist and composer who is noted as being one of the principle proponents of Serialism and the twelve-tone technique in America. His Concerto (Op. 53) was commissioned in 1953 by the Koussevitzky Music Foundation and first performed at the Library of Congress. It is scored for Piano and Wind Quintet - Flute Oboe Clarinet Horn and Bassoon - and is comprised of three movements: Allegro - Andante - Allegro Molto.Receiving critical acclaim as soon as it was released the Concerto cleverly blends atonal and diatonic elements creating an animated condensed modern work thathas unfairly fallen out of the repertoire.

The tenth concerto in B minor in L'Estro Armonico (best translated as The Harmonious Inspiration) which is edited here in A minor - for four solo guitars - is one of the most famous in the entire collection -- indeed inVivaldi's entire output. Scored for four solo violins two solo violas solo violoncello and an strings orchestra. Johann Sebastian Bach not only admired Vivaldi's Opus 3; he copied it openly. In a general sense the Vivaldipieces gave impetus to much that is in the German master's Brandenburg Concertos. More particulary six concertos of Vivaldi's Opus 3 were copied by Bach as the basis for six of his concertos: two for 0rgan (BWV 593 and 596 basedon Opus 3 nos. 8 and 11 respectively) three for solo harpsichord ) BWV 978 972 and 976 based on Opus 3 nos. 3 9 and 12 respectively) and one for four harpsichords and orchestra in A minor (BWV 1065 based on Opus 3 no. 10).Bach frequently rewrote concertos scored for one kind of instrument substituting another. It is evident that Bach thought not so much in terms of the violinistic nature of the originals but in their harmonic and rhythmicpotential which could be realized on any instrument. Since Bach has already justified an arrangement of Opus 3 number 10 by the great aesthetic success of his four-harpsichord version it serves to reason that an arrangementfor four guitars is equally valid. Just as Bach preserved everything of the original Vivaldi and added only a few doubling to accomodate the left hands of the harpsichordists so in this version the substitution of guitars is donewith little or no change of original-notes. The arpeggios especially prominent in the second movement lend themselves ideally to guitar playing and the ability of the guitar to play both lyrical lines as well as passage worksuits the violinistic lines and passages of the original.

The Boosey Masterworks Library is a truly fantastic collection of popular works ...(+)
The Boosey Masterworks Library is a truly fantastic collection of popular works from the orchestral repertoire presented in clearly notated and meticulously documented scores. This volume presents the full orchestral score of Rachmainov’s first two piano concertos which remain ever popular in the concert pianist’s repertoire the second piano concerto even more so. The first two piano concertos frame a prolonged period of self-examination and doubt in Rachmaninov’s life his earlier works were not received with great acclaim. However his resurgence as a composer on the international concert platform was brought about by his composition of thePiano Concerto No.2 in C Minor Op.18 which since its first performance remains one of the most important and popular works in the repertoire. This full orchestral score is a wonderful resource for study and perusal purposes and is clearly presented making it easy to read and follow.Note that the revised version (written in 1917) of the first piano concerto is that which is presented in this score.
