Crowns and scepters have been an essential part of the royal celebration since medieval times. This piece suggests the declaration of an opening ceremony with a bold militaristic fanfare, followed by a regal processional, reminding the listener of kings and queens receiving admiration from their people as they process on a stately occasion. Besides its potential as a piece for contest or festival performance, it will also work well for graduation ceremonies.

A majestic fanfare gives way to the melody played on the solo Great. A flowing interlude follows in a minor key on the Swell strings, building to a restatement of the opening material, a full maestoso setting of the melody with big crashing chords, and again, the fanfare material to close the voluntary. Homeward is a lyrical ballad in ABA form. The composition presents few rhythmic challenges, allowing the ensemble to concentrate on beauty of sound, balance, dynamic nuance, phrasing, and expressive performance. The woodwind voices present the melody at the opening accompanied by a flute countermelody. Care should be taken to balance the two parts. The four-measure phrases call for tapered dynamics and freedom of the metric pulse at cadence points. A change of tempo and key, with a lean toward the minor mode, mark the contrasting B section (m. 9). Heed the dynamic markings that swell to a climax (m. 16) and then subside within this section. Take liberty to hold back the tempo at the percussion link to the forte restatement of A (m. 27) and the arrival of the fortissimo climax (m. 33). The coda (m. 35) should be presented slowly and serenely as the composition comes to a quiet close.

“Diesen Kuss der ganzen Welt!” is a famous line from the “Ode to Joy” by Friedrich Schiller, the text set by Beethoven in his ninth symphony. As this work was commissioned by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra to be on the same program with the Ninth, this quote was chosen to be both the title and the message: that all humankind is together in this world, we are all related, and we should celebrate our humanity with love and joy. In addition to the title, there are several musical connections to Beethoven's Ninth in this work: the opening tremolo in the violins; the use of recitative-like phrases in the cellos; the shapes of some melodic fragments; the presence of timpani solos.

The lyrics for this work are by composer Frank Tichelli. In the opening liner notes he tells us that “the poem for the work is a meditation on time's ceaseless flow, elusiveness, ravages, and gifts.†Scored for mixed divisi chorus with piano or strings, “the musical setting divides roughly into three parts, moving from a sense of mystery and wonder, to chaos, and finally folding into prayer before fading away to complete silence.†Try it with your advanced ensemble.

Composed for violinist Baird Dodge, James Matheson's SPIN is a three-movement study in various meanings of the word spin. I. Gyre has the character of a whimsically spinning object in a sort of arena. II. Web is essentially a slow movement. It explores a nearly static, sinewy texture comprised of slowly undulating chords in which snippets of melody emerge from the notes held while the chords disappear. Similar to the first movement, III. Spiral explores a kinetic notion of spinning, this time in the form of rapidly rising scales.SPIN was composed in early 1998. Each of the work’s three movements assumes the task of exploring a different meaning of the title. The first movement, Gyre (as in gyroscope), has the character of a whimsically spinning object in a sort of arena – spinning and bouncing off the walls (like a spinning penny, which bounces off of an object unpredictably and with somewhat explosive force). The primary musical idea consists of high harmonics in the violins set against a rocking pulse in the lower strings. This basic texture is explored in various guises as the movement progresses.Web is essentially a slow movement. It explores a nearly static, sinewy texture comprised of slowly undulating chords. Snippets of melody emerge from the notes held while the chords disappear. The music intensifies, leading to an expected climax (or anti-climax) of pizzicatos, before returning to the opening material and winding gently to a close.Like Gyre, the third movement, Spiral, explores a kinetic notion of spinning, this time in the form of rapidly rising scales. The formal idea of this movement, however, has the character of a spiral, with its tendency toward implosion.SPIN was written for violinist Baird Dodge.

Piano reduction; Baritone with string quartet is also available. This 9-minute work is a setting of the beautiful and evocative poem of the same name by NativeAmerican poet Paula Gunn Allen. Lauren Bernofsky was drawn to its strong, yet changing, moods. The resulting piece moves through several characters: lonely and austere; angry; warm and content;reflective. In between each mood the music returns to an echo of the opening austere music, tyingthe piece together into an enchanting whole. The composer herself is a violinist, and so the stringwriting is idiomatic and highly effective.

The work's main orientation is an exploration of instrumental color. In particular, the alto flute and cello often act as timbral extensions of the harp, which in turn, initiates much of the work's motivic material. As a consequence of the developmental process, there results a penultimate coalescence of harmonic and thematic elements, leading to a modified recapitulation of the opening material. The title suggests the image of a serene cloud amid a continually changing sky.

The journey from Advent to Christmas is filled with vivid images of beloved traditions: the lighting of candles and Christmas trees as the light of Christ glows with increasing intensity; decorations of evergreens, symbols of the promise of rebirth; the emergence of stars atop the trees to guide the pilgrim journey; the presentation of gifts in celebration of God's great gift to us all. Throughout the centuries, believers have sung carols that celebrate these traditions, and A Garland of Carols combines these elements. It includes five suites, one for each Sunday in Advent and a fifth for Christmas Eve. Each includes an opening carol for choir and a closing medley for choir and optional congregation, as well as narratives for candle-lighting and inspired stories and scriptures for that suite's theme. The flexible choral texture makes it ideal as a one-rehearsal program for larger choirs or as an easily rehearsed program for smaller ensembles.
