Orchestra SATB vocal soli, SATB choir, 2 oboes/2 oboe d'amore, oboe d'caccia, [3 trumpets, timpani], 2 violins, viola, basso continuo - Grade 3 SKU: CA.3108013 Cantata for Reformation Day. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Edited by Klaus Hofmann. Arranged by Paul Horn. This edition: urtext. Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Bach vocal; Hymns by Martin Luther: Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott. German title: Ein feste Burg. Innovative practice aids, Sacred vocal music, Cantatas, Reformation day. Single Part, Viola. BWV 80. 12 pages. Duration 30 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 31.080/13. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3108013). ISBN 9790007045371. Key: D major. Language: German/English. Text: Luther, Martin. Text: Martin Luther, Salomo Franck. Bach's Reformation cantata, based on what is probably Martin Luther's most famous hymn, evolved over a period of several years. At the beginning was a Weimar cantata for Oculi Sunday 1716, now missing, which was based on the hymn with an instrumental quotation in the opening aria and with the final chorale. In the Leipzig years around 1730, Bach wrote a cantata for Reformation Day using this material. It began with the first verses of Luther's hymn in a simple four-part setting and also included the other verses. Later on, in the 1730s or 1740s, Bach replaced the introductory chorale movement with a chorale setting which was unique, spacious and motet-like in its style; this - uniquely in this respect - incorporated the choral writing in an instrumental canon for oboes and organ continuo. The powerful opening chorus is followed by recitatives and arias which reflect the full breadth of Bach's art of word painting and emotion. One of Bach's most magnificent cantatas, one of the greatest works in the history of music. In addition to the complete performance material the arrangements of movements 1 and 5 (with 3 trumpets, timpani as playing score) by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach are available (Carus 3108089). Score and part available separately - see item CA.3108000. $5.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Although some stories reveal a different side to his character, Apollo was widely regarded to hold a cheerful personality and communicated joy through the music he played on his lyre. Apollo Arise is an energetic and spirited work for band, ideal for opening a concert. The uplifting and exuberant melodic material lead the group on a sonic journey to capture the joy and light music can bring to both the audience and performer. From the dynamic opening fanfare to the soaring motifs and rhythms that follow, Apollo Arise provides a wonderful opportunity for the ensemble to reach for new musical heights in their performance!   Rehearsal Notes and SuggestionsThe opening twenty-four measures of the work are important for the rest of the work to unfold successfully. Encourage the ensemble to play with a unified articulation style, maintain a proper balance, and establish a consistent tempo through this section as several recurring rhythms must be performed consistently. Measure 38 features a trumpet solo, so be sure that the rest of the ensemble balances their line to support the solo instrument. In the section that begins at m. 67, there is an optional solo opportunity for trumpet and trombone. Both of these sections provide nice contrast against the full ensemble sections that are present in the work. The section at m. 81 includes a call-and-response section between woodwind, brass and percussion groups. Be sure that as groups enter, the tempo remains consistent and that the winds articulation style is unified and complimentary to the percussion. As the opening fanfare returns at m. 101, remind the ensemble to play with consistent style, balance and tempo as they did in the opening. As the ensemble begins the part of the journey with Apollo at m. 110, the music contains unique layers that must work together to be effective and set up the material that begins at m. 127. Encourage the group to play so they can hear all other lines, and allow their energy to grow into a focused musical celebration by the final note. Thank you in advance for your support of this music, and I wish you and your ensemble well as Apollo Arise welcomes the audience to your concert hall. $95.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

ISBN 9790007206307. Language: German/English. Text: Birkmann, Christoph. It only became apparent a few years ago that the text of the soprano cantata Falsche Welt, dir trau ich nicht came from the collection Gott-geheiligten Sabbaths-Zehnden by the Leipzig theology student and Bach pupil Christoph Birkmann, printed in 1728 in Nuremberg. Birkmann was probably therefore the author of the text. The cantata was written for the 23rd Sunday after Trinity, which fell on 24 November 1726 in the year of its first performance. As in other cantatas in the first annual cycle, Bach chose an instrumental sinfonia as the opening movement - here the first movement of the 1st Brandenburg Concerto. The soprano soloist has two recitatives and two arias, in which the falsehood of the world is juxtaposed with trust in God. The cantata text is rounded off with the first verse of the chorale In dich hab ich gehoffet, scored for four-part chorus, as is usual with Bach. With the use of two horns and three oboes added to the string ensemble, the cantata has colorful and varied orchestration. Das Stundenbuch. This cycle of orchestral songs sets four poems from an early collection by Rilke entitled Das Stundenbuch, or in English, Book of Hours. Although the title refers to a medieval book of prayers for the various times of day and seasons of the liturgical year, Rilke's texts occupy a position some distance from conventional piety. There is a melancholy to the spirituality expressed here, which speaks of an experience of God that is fragmentary, imperfect, and unattainable. The solitude evoked in the second song (as layers of busy activity are gradually peeled away) offers some solace, but the third song is very dark and fierce, filled with a desperate, even manic desire for God. The last song returns to the mood of the first, but now in a global rather than individual context. This song, like the set as a whole, speaks of our world's brokenness, yet strives to stammer fragments of God's name. $110.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Soli SSTB, Chor SS(A)TB, 2 Blf, 2 Ob, Taille (Sinfonia: 3 Ob), Fg, 2 Cor, 2 Vl, Va, Vne, Bc - Level 3 SKU: CA.3120813 Hunting Cantata. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Edited by Ulrich Leisinger. Single Part, viola. Composed 1713. BWV 208. 8 pages. Duration 38 minutes. Carus Verlag #3120800. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3120813). ISBN 9790007294502. German/English. Text: Franck, Salomo. A joyful dispute of the gods is how Johann Sebastian Bach's librettist Salomon Franck described the Birthday Cantata for the court of Saxony-Weissenfels, now generally known as the Hunting Cantata BWV 208. The work was probably first performed with the composer present on 23 February 1713, Duke Christian's 31st birthday. On that occasion the choir may have numbered just four soloists, but it can of course be larger. Bach also went on to perform this colorful and varied work, comprising 15 short movements, several times.
As the cantata begins with a recitative, there is an opportunity to precede it with an instrumental movement. A suitable piece is the opening movement of the 1st Brandenburg Concerto BWV 1046 with its hunting horn sounds, which Bach also used later in other works such as the church cantata BWV 52. The edition includes this movement from BWV 1046a (the oldest version) as a performance suggestion. $7.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks
