Boon était originaire dAlost et était un homme du peuple pas un universitaire commettant de la littérature depuis sa tour divoire. Il savait comme personne tâter le pouls de lhomme de la rue et ses descriptions de personnages mettaient invariablement dans le mille.Comme dans la plupart de ses autres livres Boon a pris pour Priester Daens sa chère ville dAlost comme point de départ dune épopée sur la justice et linjustice sur la vie et la mort. Il nousreplonge dans lAlost de 1900 et nous immerge dans la vie rude et sans issue de la classe ouvrière. Un homme seul engage la lutte contre limmense injustice de lépoque. Cet homme cest labbé Daens.Lors de ladaptation du livre au grand écran le réalisateur Stijn Coninx est resté très fidèle à Boon. Cependant il ne sest pas concentré uniquement sur le Daensisme mais davantage sur la pénible vie du milieu ouvrier. Il a magistralement réussi à faire revivre la réalité du tournant du siècle.InjusticesLa comédie musicale Daens nous ramène à Alost en 1888. Après un conflit avec lév?que Stillemans labbé Daens retourne dans sa ville natale Alost. Il sinstalle chez son frère Pieter Daens léditeur du journal Het Land van Aalst (Le Pays dAlost). La ville provinciale est également devenue le nouvel habitat des campagnards qui ont fui la pauvreté m?me sils nont fait quéchanger un environnement misérable pour un autre.
