Originally commissioned by Jessica Heller Knopf for the 2012 World Saxophone Congress in St. Andrews, Scotland, and adapted for clarinet and piano in 2024 for UMKC clarinetist Luke Vasilarakos, THE SOULFUL AND THE PERPETUAL is in two movements. “The Soulful” is lyrical and expressive, with moving, gripping melodies. “The Perpetual” is a moto perpetuo, symbolizing consistency and perseverance. The virtuosic cadenza uses circular breathing to create ever-moving patterns of fast notes, reaching toward the exquisite with fluency and agility.
