Le légendaire violoniste génois Niccolò Paganini (Gênes, 27 octobre 1782 - Nice, 27 mai 1840) est probablement l'unique grand compositeur du passé à avoir voué une attention constante à la guitare et, quoiqu'il n'en ait jamais joué dans des concerts publics, divers témoignages nous sont parvenus sur son habileté de guitariste. La guitare a représenté pour le maître génois l'instrument harmonique et accompagnateur par excellence, au point qu'elle occupe dans sa production le rôle que les compositeurs de son temps confiaient normalement au piano. Paganini a écrit 140 pièces pour guitare seule et presque toutes ses oeuvres pour cordes (pour violon, principalement : sonates, duos, trios, quatuors et même certains concertos pour violon et orchestre) furent conçues avec un accompagnement de guitare. Le choix anthologique est basé sur l'intention d'extraire de cette surabondance dispersive les pièces qui représentent au mieux l'esprit et l'originalité de Paganini. De nos jours il faut, pour rendre cette musique accessible à n'importe quel interprète, la compléter par une réalisation polyphonique des parties : cette édition se conforme au style des éditeurs viennois de l'époque de Mauro Giuliani, c'est-à-dire qu'elle écrit séparément la voix supérieure et la basse, reliant tous les remplissages harmoniques à ces deux voix principales. C'est du reste à ce type d'écriture, que s'appliquent toutes les pratiques d'exécution en vigueur à cheval entre la fin du XVIIIe et les premières années du XIXe siècle. / Guitare

La partie principale du Supplément Volume 12 dispose le prédécesseur de Grandes Etudes de Paganini , une série de six études écrites après Paganini entre 1838 et 1840, et en passant par Liszt performances transcendant ( Etudes d'exécution transcendante d'apres Paganini ) . La série a été inspiré non seulement par le violoniste virtuose et Caprices et le Concerto pour violon du compositeur en si mineur , mais aussi par les études de Paganini de Schumann , Liszt probablement rencontrés grâce à Clara Wieck au début de 1838. S. 6), composed during his Lucca period (1805-1809), forms part of a series of music written for solo violin that has failed to attract the attention of both performers and scholars interested in Genoa’sfamous violinist. Niccolò Paganini gave the premiere performance of his Second Violin Concerto at La Scala in Milan, 1827. The success of the performance was such that the last movement of the concerto was repeated. The subtitle of this movement is \'La Campanella\' (The little bell) because of the sound the harmonics in this work produce. Paganini known for his pyrotechnics uses double harmonics and left hand pizzicato lavishly in this movement. Moto Perpetuo is one of Paganini\'s most popular works. Dozens of transcriptions exist for a variety of instruments, from marimba to double bass, as well as for orchestra, where all first violins play the solo part.
