This Viardot Edition is the first critical edition of Pauline Viardot’s songs. It is based on fair copies of the woman composer, who was one of the most versatile singers and important representatives of the bel canto performance tradition in the 19th century. The present volume includes settings of Russian texts by Pushkin, Feth and Turgenev as well as Italian-language songs based on Tuscan folk lyrics. All songs are accompanied by German translations, which were specifically prepared for the German first edition in the 19th century.
The solo Lied with piano accompaniment was Pauline Viardot’s main genre, which she made bloom in the most diverse colors, depending on text and style. In addition to her own use, the sought-after vocal pedagogue also wrote her songs for her students. Accordingly, the songs included in this volume are suitable for different vocal genres in terms of their ranges and expressive content: for example, songs such as “Zwei Rosen”, “L'innamorata” or “Das Vöglein” are suitable for light, high voices, while lyrical, lower voices can find suitable songs with “Ruhige, heilige Nacht”, “Flüstern, atemscheues Lauschen” or “C’era una volta”. For versatile voices with a gift for coloratura, “Non vi maravigliate” is a little showpiece, while voices with the ability for dramatic accents can sing songs like “Die Beschwörung” or “Mitternächtige Bilder”. Unlike the sometimes very long Russian songs, the consistently short Italian songs are well suited as an introduction to the easier Italian repertoire. The songs depict clearly defined scenes within which the singers are able to develop their respective characters.

En ces années 1856-1859, Paris retentit de concerts en tous genres. « C’est un temps de musique acharnée », s’exclame Berlioz qui, bien qu’au faîte de sa carrière de musicien avec son élection à l’Institut, le grand succès de L’Enfance du Christ et la composition des Troyens, continue d’honorer ses obligations au Journal des débats. L’orgue-Alexandre est l’instrument du jour et l’on s’arrache les billets pour entendre l’étonnant corniste Vivier, très apprécié à la cour. D’autres instrumentistes exceptionnels comme Bülow, Litolff ou le jeune Wieniawski se distinguent parmi les centaines d’artistes qui se produisent. Berlioz ne fréquente plus la Société des concerts du Conservatoire, trop « endormie », mais salue le dynamisme de la Société des jeunes artistes dirigée par Jules Pasdeloup et la création de nouvelles formations de musique de chambre. Si l’Opéra se contente de créer des ouvrages de compositeurs « installés », avec La Magicienne d’Halévy et Herculanum de David, ou de reprendre des valeurs sûres comme Le Prophète, La Reine de Chypre et Guillaume Tell, l’Opéra-Comique affiche Le Pardon de Ploërmel de Meyerbeer, à la réussite éclatante. Quant au Théâtre-Lyrique, il vit ses plus belles heures, avec la création du Faust de Gounod, la mise à l’honneur d’opéras de Mozart et Weber, et la reprise de l’Orphée de Gluck dans une version de Berlioz, avec l’inoubliable Pauline Viardot. Hector Berlioz was enthralled by Gluck and heard his masterpieces Iphigénie en Tauride Orphée Alceste and Armide in Paris.The original Italian version of Orphée gives the title role to a castrato. Gluck rewrote the part for high tenor for the performances in France (1774). In 1859 Berlioz arranged the opera so that Orpheus could be sung by the great mezzo-soprano Pauline Viardot with whom he worked closely at that time. He changed the formal design by dividing the work into four instead of three acts and placing the scenes in Hades and the Elysian Fields in separate acts. He also changed certain sections of Orpheus?s part mainly in therecitatives and fundamentally reworked Gluck?s orchestration.Berlioz?s version of Orphée is published as volume 22a of the New Berlioz Edition.
