Not just any box, but the venerable Chatterbox jazz club! Monika originally recorded this hard-driving shuffle with her Acoustic Project. Now, the angular bebop lines are traded between trumpets and saxes. Solos for trombone, tenor sax, and guitar are provided in note-for-note transcriptions. However, there is room for any soloist before a sax soli further develops the melodic theme. Punchy and confident, this chart does not let up! Top trumpet note: G5 (4:00).

Brimming with optimism, this original chart from Jamie Roth pulls from gospel tradition in a bright and cheerful full-band setting. After a straight-eighth-note introduction builds to a huge plagal cadence, the band emerges in shuffle swing time with each section featured in turn. Solo changes are provided for Piano, Alto 1, Tenor 1, Trumpet 2, Trombone 2, and Guitar. A transcription of the Tenor Sax solo from the recording is provided. Detailed rhythm section parts include written bass lines and suggested piano voicings. Great writing with lots of tasty lines for every part in the band! (Top trumpet note: C6).

Two carefully transcribed solos are provided for trumpet and guitar that match the superb recorded solos, or they can be improvised as desired. Optional parts are included for flute/violin, clarinet and F horn, and the lead trumpet range is to G top of staff. Let the rhythm section lay down an earthy groove in half-time funk. The horns ride along with a bluesy melody that builds to a great stop-time. Modest ranges all around with reduced instrumentation (3 Saxes, 2 Trumpets, 1 Bone) keep it within reach of smaller groups, while extra parts for Flute, Clarinet, Horn, Baritone T.C., and Tuba add flexibility. Solo transcriptions are provided that match the recording, along with easier versions of those solos to give younger players a starting point. A hip, fun, and memorable chart. (Top Trumpet Note: D5).

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of a 20th century masterwork with this authentic retelling of Long Distance Runaround, originally recorded by British progressive rock band Yes. An iconic moment in pop and rock history is scored neatly for big band with the option to feature either a vocalist or tenor sax soloist. Just like the original, powered by bass guitar and sprightly jazz drums, this version captures the spirit of adventurous art rock. Two, brief open solos for any instrument cap the long outro.

The traditional Irish carol fits nicely over a Partido Alto Latin feel. The two-measure ostinato dances under a legato melody played by five saxes and a flugelhorn. Solo transcriptions for flugel and alto sax are drawn from the demo recording. Carefully-notated rhythm section parts spool down to a winsome last chord for piano and guitar. This is not just a charming and playable holiday chart. It's also a great entry point to an important South American style! Top trumpet note: F5.

La Curandera Negrita is basically a minor blues chart. Though this piece is written in 6/8, it is perhaps more accurately felt in a lilting triplet divided 4/4---with the dotted quarter receiving the pulse of a quarter note. Embrace the clustery sound of some of the voicings, and rehearse them slowly so your ears grow accustomed to the rubs sounding natural. The bass line changes its underlying pulse more frequently than in an ordinary Latin setting. This chart is longer than most high school-level material. Great interpretive latitude is encouraged so that each performance can sound different. First trumpet: C (2 ledger lines above staff).
