Scarlet Letters was composed in 1984 on commission of the pianist and harpsichordist Franzpeter Goebels (1920-1988) on the occasion of the 300th birth day of Domenico Scarlatti. The original working title 'Lettere scarlattine' is a concealed homage to the Italian composer. The compositional material is limited to the tones D, E, C, Es (= S, spoken 'Es' = E flat in German notation) and A, derived from the musical letters of Domenico Scarlatti's name, and the tones B (= B flat in German nota tion) and H (= B natural), the initials of my name. With 7 tones and 7 parts, this music is a sort of story about my imaginary encounter with the composer Domenico Scarlatti who was then one of my favourite composers. Sometimes I also used compositional means which I discovered in the sonatas of Scarlatti, such as quick 6/8 figures, afterbeat octaves and repetitions of short motifs. I tried to translatethe clarity, brightness and cheerfulness, the astounding modulations and the pianistic brilliance of his music into my compositional language.Barbara HellerThe piece was recorded on CD by the American pianist Deborah Richards (WERGO 6610-02). Hanne Deneire (°1980) studied composition, piano and bass clarinet at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. As a composer, she has worked with major theatres, orchestras and ensembles. Her music is performed internationally from Belgium over St Peterburg en Milan till Japan. Hanne cherishes yet another passion as well: With her House of Music, she has been trying to help gifted children belonging to deprived groups through music. After a year of intense coursework in psychology at the University of Brussels (VUB) she started as a music therapist in 2006. At the Guildhall School of Drama and Music in London she specialised in composition and community art. From 2007-2012 Hanne has been teaching at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp.

The earliest surviving version of the popular Valse-Impromptu was written by Liszt into the diary of Tsaritsa Aleksandra Feodorovna on his visit to St Petersburg in 1842. This version appeared in print the following year as Petit valse favorite. On his next visit to Russia, in 1843, Liszt wrote a musically and technically more demanding version for Countess Marie Kalergis, a pupil of Chopin, but this was never published in the composer's lifetime. A final version, similar in shaping to the second, appeared in 1853 with the title Valse-Impromptu. The present edition contains the score of all three versions as published in the New Liszt Edition, with the critical notes to them andprefaces in English and German covering all the main issues of the work's origin and interpretation.

'Christmas * Peace on Earth' is the leading motive of the String Quartet, a tenet of faith as well as an expression of hope. In the first part of the work Vasks uses themes from a well-known Christmas carol, while the second part is strongly influenced by Latvian folksongs and dances. The third section, with a chromaticiscm strongly reminiscent of Shostakovitch, investigates and questions the feasibility of any peace in our society. The final, calm and slightly melancholy section symbolizes 'Peace on Earth' by means of sonorous sustained choirs.

This work was commissioned by the Osaka Kyoiku University Wind Orchestra. The world premiere took place with trumpet soloist, Osamu Kumashiro and was conducted by the composer, who was inspired by the famous Ponte Vecchio (the old bridge) during a visit to Florence. The solo part can also be performed on euphonium or alto saxophone. Deze compositie is geschreven in opdracht van het Osaka Kyoiku University Wind Orchestra. Windgeboren belongs to a group of works in which musical conceptions are nourished by the wind as a gathering metaphor of the perceptible but invisible natural forces behind the music. In addition to this image a number of other impressions have arisen during the process of composition which have to some extent left their mark on the three strongly contrasting movements, for example, wind and spirit are said to be expressed by the same word in Hebrew. The archangel Michael is portrayed as the weigher of souls in many wonderful Danish frescos. Saint Michael in the role of standard-bearer and soul leader performs in the offertorium of the Requiem Mass. He leads the souls toward clarity, the holy light, the tripartition: beginning - middle - conclusion; birth - life - death; intonation - passage - hymn. This work is dedicated to Die Michaelstrompeter and Markus Stockhausen.

With serious string players this Latvian composer has long been recognized because of his sonorous tonal concepts and his modal, occasionally aleatoric idiom. Works like 'Cantabile per Archi' or 'Musica dolorosa' are already quite well-known, but newer pieces like the violin concerto with string orchestra 'Fernes Licht', commissioned by Gidon Kremer for his Kremerata Baltica, are also gaining wide international exposure. The genre of the string quartet is well represented in Vasks' output. The 2nd string quartet 'Summer Tunes' (ED 8512) has been published for some time and the 3rd was premiered by the Kronos Quartet who were so enthused that they commissioned a 4th quartet. In 1996, prompted by a complete recording of all his string quartets by the Miami String Quartet for Conifer Records Vasks totally revised his early 1st string quartet 1996, it is here presented for the first time in a printed edition.
