The Book of Urizen is a work for concert band, solo soprano, and a male narrator in which sound collages of religious expressions are used. The piece is inspired by the compelling visionary poem of the same name (which the poet illustratedhimself) by the Englishman William Blake (1757-1827), who occupies a unique position in western literature and the visual arts. He was not just a poet and a writer, but he was also a graphic artist, a painter, an illustrator, a spiritualist, areligious visionary, and a mystic philosopher. For the performance of this work, a professional sound system, including two microphones and a CD player, is needed. The three sound collages are three separate tracks on the enclosed CD and can beplayed easily at the right moment. The Book of Urizen bears resemblance to Genesis and Exodus, of which the contents form the basis of the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic faith. Blake adhered to the principle that all religions are in fact one,and that deities reside in human beings. In The Book of Urizen this is represented in “The Net of Religion,†which is spanned over the earth by Urizen. The sound collages, compiled by Jacob de Haan in the studio, find their origin inJerusalem, the Holy City, where the afore-mentioned faiths “come together.†In the first movement of this composition, The Vision, Urizen prepares his vision of the world, and he presents this to the “Eternals.†His vision is rejected, and Urizen locks himself up in his own abstract world. When he does emerge again, he is confronted with rage by the gathered Eternals. Urizen flees the wrath of the Eternals, “the flames of eternal fury,†and enwombs himself in his own world. Whenthe Eternals see Urizen in his “stony sleep,†they wonder if this is death. The blacksmith Los is torn by grief because of the isolation of Urizen. It brings him to rouse his fires, prepare his forge, and to give Urizen’s world concrete form. In thesecond movement, The Creation, Urizen’s world, but also man, woman, and child are created. Los is horrified with the appearance of Urizen’s body. He mourns and pities Urizen, and from his blood a female form comes into being, with thename Enitharmon. The Eternals, fearful of the female form, decide to erect a tent to obstruct their view to eternity. Enitharmon and Los beget a son, called Orc. Los baptizes him as a child of the “fallen world.†Orc is fed at Enitharmon’s breast, which makes a girdle of jealousy restrict Los’ chest. He takes the child to the top of the mountain and chains him down. The cries of Orc awaken Urizen, who explores his world creating instruments of scientific measurement to do so. Los encircles theface of Enitharmon from the sight of Urizen and Orc. She then populates the earth by giving birth to an enormous race. The Web, third movement of The Book of Urizen is now available: DHP 1125252

Medium Voice & Piano SKU: ST.Y297 Composed by Rhian Samuel. Vocal music. Score. Stainer & Bell Ltd. #Y297. Published by Stainer & Bell Ltd. (ST.Y297). ISBN 9790220223563. 1. In Summer (Denise Levertov) (d - f') 2. A Dragonfly in the Sun (Zulfikar Ghose) (c - g') The poetry of Denise Levertov (1923-1997) and of Zulfikar Ghose (born 1935) is the inspiration for the two Summer Songs by Rhian Samuel, first performed by tenor James Gilchrist and pianist William Vann at The Forge, Camden Town, on 10 May 2012 as part of the London English Song Festival. Though Levertov chiefly explored themes of left-wing politics and of religion in her work, her poem 'In Summer' is a brief aubade, uncomplicated by philosophical overtones. Sunrise is observed with a pensive humour that in Samuel's setting is registered through the interrupted flow of predominantly pastoral textures. Complementary to Levertov's image of the slow diurnal transformation of light, 'A Dragonfly in the Sun' by the Pakistan-born poet Zulfikar Ghose presents the intense perception of a moment, the myriad colours of the creature's wing an unalloyed sensation evoked in words and music. Summer Songs would suit a confident and accomplished singer who is looking in particular for a concise example of contemporary vocal material as a vehicle for sensitivity of declamation and the artful communication of vividly contrasting moods in English. $11.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

Michael Hopkins brought this massive compendium of information into an organized setting useful for collegiate string methods, performance and pedagogy classes, in-service and convention settings, individuals in the field, and for the studio teacher. —Robert Culver, from the Foreword The Art of String Teaching—a hybrid of written text and high-quality online videos—is a comprehensive string pedagogy resource covering everything from the origins and history of the string family to advanced-level string techniques. This one-of-a-kind resource has been divided into two parts. In Part I, Michael Hopkins offers an orientation to string education, outlines his philosophical approach to string education, and provides four chapters on the foundational aspects of string playing for beginning string players. Part 2 focuses on intermediate- and advanced-level instruction, touching on such topics as left-hand shifting, vibrato, bowing techniques, tuning skills, improvisation and composition, and music listening, among others. The two concluding chapters offer insight into the string rehearsal and how to run a successful orchestra program. The appendices contain an abundance of practical and convenient teacher resources, including worksheets, flashcards, string repertoire, scales and arpeggios, a template for method book analysis, and sample assessments and rubrics. QR codes throughout the book link to online video demonstrations of string techniques, and the spiral binding is ideal for playing the included string repertoire from a music stand. This book serves as a useful reference guide for professional orchestra conductors, teachers of group string classes, and private studio teachers. It also addresses the needs of students whose primary instrument is not strings and is suited for use in a string techniques or pedagogy course at the college level. Michael Hopkins is Associate Professor of Music Education at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In addition to serving as a guest conductor at string festivals across the country, he has given many presentations at state and national conferences on various topics related to string education and music technology. | Piano quartet (1925-26, rev. 1935) - Score (piano) & string parts [Score and Parts] Fennica Gehrman
Violin, viola, violoncello, piano SKU: FG.55011-755-6 Composed by Helvi L...(+)
Violin, viola, violoncello, piano SKU: FG.55011-755-6 Composed by Helvi Leiviskä. Classical, contemporary. Score & parts. Fennica Gehrman #55011-755-6. Published by Fennica Gehrman (FG.55011-755-6). ISBN 9790550117556. Finnish composer Helvi Leiviskä (1902-1982) created a broad-based output of orchestral works, solo songs and chamber music. Her style could be described as moderate modernism, deriving influences from multiple sources such as late Romanticism, Symbolism, Expressionism, Existentialism and Neo-Classicism. Leiviskä's output is characterised by philosophical and religious themes, images of nature and narrative structures. Many of her works focus on human existential angst and spiritual searching and growth.
Helvi Leiviskä originally completed her Piano Quartet in A major op. 1 in 1926 but revised it a decade later, in 1935. Written for the traditional piano quartet lineup (violin, viola, cello and piano), the work is in three movements and has a duration of about 25 minutes. It features religious and ecstatic imagery such as may be found in French, German or Russian neo-Romantic styles.
Leiviskä's Piano Quartet is considered one of the cornerstones of her chamber music output. Its early version was premiered in two parts at student recitals of the Helsinki Music Institute (the 1st movement in 1925 and the 2nd and 3rd movements in 1926). The revised version was performed in full by Timo Mikkilä (piano), Sulo Aro (violin), Ilmo Ranta (viola) and Pentti Rautawaara (cello) on Finnish radio in 1939. The work was also on the programme of Leiviskä's second composition concert in 1945, being performed on that occasion by Jussi Jalas (piano), Erik Cronvall (violin), Erik Karma (viola) and Yrjö Selin (cello). Two commercial recordings have been released (Finlandia Classics 2012 and Telos Music 2016). It is published for the first time 2022 with an extensive foreword by Susanna Välimäki. The product includes the full score (piano part) and a set of string parts.

The world premiere of the 2018 original version was presented by the SPO in April of the same year in Shanghai, while the world premiere of the 2019 revised version was presented by the Philadelphia Orchestra in January at its home venue with the combined forces of both orchestras side-by-side. Inspired by the artistic power of Peking Opera the crowning heritage of Chinese traditional performing arts, the symphony strives to translate the emotional and philosophical experience of the art form for international audiences and to explore the Western orchestra's expressive abilities in capturing the Eastern spirit. The 2018 original version ran as long as 76 minutes, before the composer extensively revised the score down to 40 and presented it in a single movement without pause. The work is scored for a huge orchestra of over 100 players. Main materials that inspired the music are from the traditional Peking Opera repertory: The Drunken Beauty, Farewell My Concubine, In Pursuit of the General, and The Chancellor and the Advisor (lit. Cao Cao and Yang Xiu). 'Peking Fantasy' is in a sweet, direct musical language ...It's a work of highly original sounds presented in a series of vivid episodes.” -Peter Dobrin, The Philadelphia Inquirer. $125.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock
| Sinfonia XVI: Transcendental Vienna Concert band [Score and Parts] - Intermediate Manhattan Beach Music

Concert band - Grade 4 SKU: MH.1-59913-072-6 Composed by Timothy Broege. Suitable for high school, community, and college bands. Conductor score and set of parts. Duration 7:00. Published by Manhattan Beach Music (MH.1-59913-072-6). ISBN 9781599130729. Program Notes: It was a happy coincidence that the commission for SINFONIA XVI: TRANSCENDENTAL VIENNA came from the Henry David Thoreau School located in Vienna, Virginia. Thoreau is one of the magic names in American culture: Henry David Thoreau, one of the leading figures of the Transcendentalist movement, centered in 19th-century New England, left us a body of unique philosophical and poetical writings. To utter the words, Walden Pond, is to invoke an America long past in physical actuality, but still present in the minds and hearts of many American citizens. The name, Vienna, of course, summons thoughts of the Old World: culture, fine food, wine, civilized cities. While contemplating the form that SINFONIA XVI should take, I found myself thinking of two pillars of Viennese culture: expressionism and the waltz. Musically speaking, expressionism reached a zenith in the works of Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg. It was Berg, in particular, that I wanted to invoke in the outer movements of my composition. I knew I would also have to include a waltz, and an invocation of the mysterious forces that are contained in both expressionism and transcendentalism. Thus was the structure of the work generated. The outer movements with their vision of the night sky and the stars, Aldebaran and Sirius, frame the central movements, which are essentially two versions of the same material, and are quieter and less dramatic. The outer movements are symmetrical, and share both pitch and rhythmic materials. Accordingly, I see the work as a ternary form, with the central movements forming a unit within the outer frame: A (Movement 1) B (Movements 2 & 3) A' (Movement 4). Harmonically, the work can be summarized by the two pitch-series which occur in the opening bars of Movement 1: the initial 12-note row, with a tonal center on F-sharp (measures 1-6), and the subsequent D-minor Dorian 7-note row (beginning in measure 14). Aspects of these materials occur in all four movements, but they are most strongly present in Movements 1 and 4. Note that the 12-note row is not subjected to the usual serial procedures, but instead is treated as a signifier and is left unchanged. Since the fourth movement takes up where the first movement leaves off, I can conceive of one interpretation of SINFONIA XVI as an evocation of Thoreau himself contemplating two of the brightest stars on a clear, cold night. Aldebaran is an orange, first-magnitude star, located in the constellation Taurus; Sirius, the Dog Star, is the brightest star in the sky, and is located in the constellation Canis Major. Thoreau interrupts his star-gazing to entertain some inward thoughts, waking dreams, as it were, then returns his gaze to the splendid night sky and all its treasures. Although many other interpretations of the material are possible, it is important to remember that the abstract materials of the piece -- pitch, rhythm, structure -- are what count the most. Madame Hensel, Mendelssohn's sister, whose eyes speak intelligence and profundity''. This diary entry made by Robert Schumann in June 1843 succinctly but fittingly characterizes Fanny Hensel, without a doubt the most significant woman composer of the 19th century. Born in Hamburg on 14 November 1805, she was the eldest sister of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and the granddaughter of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. In 1829 she married the Prussian court painter and occasional poet Wilhelm Hensel (1794-1861). After her sudden death in Berlin on 14 May 1847 as a result of a stroke, the music journalist Ludwig Rellstab poignantly wrote that she shared the brotherhood ef talent with her famous sibling.Fanny Hensel was given the same excellent and comprehensive musical training as her precocious brother, including composition lessons with Goethe's friend Carl Friedrich Zelter. Felix and Fanny not only loved each other tenderly, but they also maintained an intensive, life-long exchange of ideas which proved musically profitable to both of them. However, it was only in 1846 that Mendelssohn gave up his resistance to Fanny's publication plans. And so, just shortly before her death, she was able to publish a carefully selected sample of her songs and piano pieces. Not only these pieces, but also a few orchestral and chamber-music works (e.g. the String Quartet in E flat major, KM 2255) and, in particular, choral music occupy an important position in her oeuvre. Most of her choral works were written in 1846, and she was able to rehearse them with the chorus she conducted at the famous Sunday Concerts in the Mendelssohn home. She had six of these choral songs published in a revised version under the title Gartenlieder Op. 3 by the Berlin music publisher Bote & Bock. The title of the Gartenlieder brings to mind Mendelssohn's well-known Lieder im Freien zu singen (Opera 41, 48, 59; ChB 4763-4780), published before 1846. But, as far as the quality of their melodic writing, the compositional technique, and the choice of texts are concerned, as well as the perfect balance between folk-like simplicity and polished design, they are as outstanding as the works of her brother.
Fanny Hensel's choral works not only stand up to comparison with any of the rich and varied choral works of the Romantic era - they also rank among the best. Very likely to become hits! (Musica). $3.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

Ensemble (Score) SKU: HL.287423 Ensemble Score. Composed by Hans A...(+)
Ensemble (Score) SKU: HL.287423 Ensemble Score. Composed by Hans Abrahamsen. Music Sales America. Classical. Softcover. 200 pages. Duration 1080 seconds. Edition Wilhelm Hansen #WH31089. Published by Edition Wilhelm Hansen (HL.287423). Wald for Ensemble was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 2008-09. Co-commission by the Schonberg Ensemble and BBC for Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. Programme Note Wald is, in a way, a series of variations from the beginning of my woodwind quintet Walden (1978). This thematical idea is very simple - a rising call of a fourth and the response in other voices. This idea is repeated several times, but because the call has aslower pulse than the responses, the process leads to them changing order. In Walden I borrowed the title from the American philosopher Henry David Thoreau, who, in the middle of the eighteenth century, in alittle wooden hermit house at the bank of the lake Walden pond, wrote the book Walden of his life and time in the forests. Here he experimented living for two years in order to come closer to nature and to see if it was possible to live simply without all the unnecessary needs created by society. The book is filled with poetry, but is also cutting and critical of society. In my piece Walden, I tried to search for the same simplicity, handling the most simple material, but at the same time trying not to lose the poetry. Wald is a twin piece to Walden, but also to my former piece Schnee. Robert Schumann wrote in 1848-49 a wonderful piano piece, Waldszenen. He wrote this collection of short pieces with beautiful titles. $68.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Organ and speakers SKU: HL.49017441 Composed by Petr Eben. This edition: Paperback/Soft Cover. Sheet music. PANTON. Composed 1981. 124 pages. Schott Music #P5040. Published by Schott Music (HL.49017441). 9.0x12.0x0.376 inches. This composition evolved from an improvisation played by Petr Eben himself on numerous concert tours across Europe. Now the printed version long awaited by many organists has been published. The fourteen pieces are based on themes taken from the book by the same name by the humanist philosopher, educational theorist and theologist Johann Amos Comenius (1592-1670). Eben writes about the piece: 'The pilgrim who wanders through the labyrinth of the world finds nothing here to delight him and turns his heart towards God. What touches me most about Comenius' view is his tireless striving to make the world a better place. The whole atmosphere of the text is not that of an idyllic stroll through the world, but of a satirical, bizarre and sometimes even apocalyptic vision.'. $50.00 - See more - Buy online

Orchestra SKU: AP.1-ADV40010 For Soprano or Tenor Saxophone, String Orchestra, Harp, and Percussion. Composed by Bill Dobbins. Performance Music Ensemble; Single Titles; String Orchestra. Advance Music. Jazz. Score and Part(s). Advance Music #01-ADV40010. Published by Advance Music (AP.1-ADV40010). UPC: 805095400106. English. The Stranger is titled after the novel of the same name by the French existentialist philosopher and writer Albert Camus. The piece seems to capture some of the general mood of the story, with its underlying feeling of melancholy and sense of inevitability. Since the music is written in an even eighth-note style, with either a contemporary classical or a Latin rhythmic feeling, the string section is not required to phrase in a jazz or swing style. The use of light percussion rather than a drumset makes the arrangement ideal for acoustic performance without amplification. $151.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

Piano SKU: HL.14007553 For Piano. Composed by Justin Connolly. Mus...(+)
Piano SKU: HL.14007553 For Piano. Composed by Justin Connolly. Music Sales America. Classical. Softcover. 26 pages. Novello & Co Ltd. #NOV360129. Published by Novello & Co Ltd. (HL.14007553). 12.0x16.5 inches. An ennead is a large composition in nine sections. Historical examples include an important early Latin epic, the discourses of the neoplatonic philosopher Plotinus, and the once popular poem by Edward Young, first published in 1745. This last was re-issued in 1802, in a sumptuous edition illustrated with more than five hundred engravings by William Blake, whose own Vala is also an ennead. Young's poem was called Night Thoughts, and I had originally intended to use the same title for my own set of quite independent nocturne-like pieces. Finally, I decided on the name Sonatina, as being a more accurate description of a work in which the interrelatedness of the sections placed it somewhere between the character of a suite and that of a set of variations, as well as emphasizing its artistic descent from the type of irregular sonata pioneered by such composers as Alkan and Busoni. -Justin Connolly. $17.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Concert Band/Harmonie - Grade 5 SKU: BT.GOB-000304-010 Composed by Jan Bo...(+)
Concert Band/Harmonie - Grade 5 SKU: BT.GOB-000304-010 Composed by Jan Bosveld. Set (Score & Parts). 26 pages. Gobelin Music Publications #GOB 000304-010. Published by Gobelin Music Publications (BT.GOB-000304-010). An Astrological Composition.
Astrology is based on the principle that each sort of time has its own quality. In order to determine the quality of a particular moment, an astrologer looks at the position of the planets in the solar sustemat that moment. Each planet has specific types of energies and its location provides unique information for a certain moment on Earth. Thus: its position in the sky tells something about what happens on Earth.
In this composition the typesof energies of four planets are musically translated. The four planet were not randomly chosen. There are two pairs, whose influence and energy are opposite.
Venus and Mars. Venus represents the feminine principle: harmony, beauty, art, and the ability to make relationships and to keep the peace. Venus connects, and communicates in order to maintain the balance. Mars represent the masculine principle: winning, impulsiveness, enthusiasm, and sexual energy for procreation. He creates war enabling the strongest to triumph. Mars is musically depicted in a stirring march in which enthusiasm characterises the masculine character.
Saturn and Jupiter. Saturn represents concentration and withdrawal: the strongnotion of responsibility, seriousness, self-discipline and melancholy. Saturn is the hermit who will conquer his fears and worries in minimal conditions and by self-chastisement. This contemplative character is depicted in the music as if it isalmost standing still, which also reflects the given character of this planet. Jupiter represents growth and expansion: the positive, self-confidence, the good Samaritan, the healer. Jupiter is the philosopher who will make the world a betterplace, sees future possibilities, and searches for eternal values. He is the prophet who sometimes rants and raves his doctrine and proclamations, resulting musically in a whirling and upbeat finale. not looking back at what has been but searchingfor new challenges.
Heaven and Earth was commisioned by the Music Lending and Information Centre (MUI), a department of the library for the province of Gelderland in Arnhem, The Netherlands.
