Par MUSTONEN OLLI. The first movement of my Piano Quintet is filled with drama and passion. Its atmosphere can be related to my Second Symphony Johannes Angelos. The second movement is a set of polyphonic variations in a form reminiscent of a passacaglia. The music seems to be hypnotized by a theme consisting of a chromatic cluster of ten notes. In the beginning of the last movement, materials from the previous movements start to reappear, but this time in a mysterious, incoherent way. The strings find new music resembling a fragmented hymn. Fast-moving triplets start to appear and the music reaches a joyful and ecstatic conclusion. Olli Mustonen / Niveau : 5 / Répertoire / 2 Violons, Alto, Violoncelle et Piano

1001 Nights in the Harem. Par SAY FAZIL. 'My Violin Concerto consists of four movements whose inspiration is loosely connected with Scheherazade’s One Thousand and One Nights. The first movement is set inside the harem; a variety of women from the harem are introduced, each with her own different personality. The second movement is a frenzy of dance – in effect a party night with an abundance of different types of dance music. The third movement depicts the next morning and consists primarily of variations on a well-known Turkish song. The fourth movement begins dramatically, but develops during the course of the movement more and more into a reminiscence of all the previous events and the work culminates dreamily in a happy mood with sensuous oriental sounds.
As appropriate for an oriental soundscape, the orchestra includes a series of Turkish percussion instruments such as a kudüm or bendir, but also glockenspiel, marimba und vibraphone, celesta and harp. It is however the solo violin which tells the story and also accompanies the listener through the entire work. The violin part is highly virtuoso and unites the four movements into an intensely atmospheric whole in which the solo violin soars off into a solo cadenza between each movement, sometimes accompanied by one of the percussion instruments.
As is customary, the present piano reduction is initially intended as an aid for the study of this work, but during my tour programmes with Patricia Kopatchinskaya and Burhan Öçal we have utilised this material to create a trio version for violin, piano and percussion.' Chamber Ensemble: Score [Sheet music] Wilhelm Hansen
Dramaphonia for Piano solo and Chamber Ensemble was composed by Poul Ruders in 1...(+)
Dramaphonia for Piano solo and Chamber Ensemble was composed by Poul Ruders in 1987. First part of 'Drama Trilogy'. Commissioned by and dedicated to Poul Rosenbaum and Lontano. Programme note: 'Dramaphonia' for Piano solo and 11 instruments forms the first part of a trilogy of solo-concertos the remaining two being one for percussion and smaller symphony orchestra ('Monodrama') and the last ('Polydrama') for violoncello and full orchestra. All three pieces are in one movement each and may be performed together thus presenting a vast 'concerto grosso' of the duration of ninety minutes. Each concerto however standsby itself offering its own story: having employed the word 'drama' in all three pieces I naturally want to imply that something is 'going on' a series of hidden events created by each listener’s own 'inner theatre' which enables him to stage his own personal associations and in the case of 'Dramaphonia' the compositorical tension alters between action and frozen panoramas. In the percussion concerto the rhythmical progression is being constantly intensified whereas the metric proportions of Dramaphonia tighten and loosen like a magnifying glass being wielded in and out of focus. Romances - Six short pieces for Viola and Piano by Poul Ruders. Programme note A...(+)
Romances - Six short pieces for Viola and Piano by Poul Ruders. Programme note According to tradition a mid- or late-19th century instrumental Romance - or Romanza - is a shortish composition of predominantly melodic nature with a slight leaning toward the sentimental. In several European languages such as German French and Danish the word for navel i.e. an unfolding drama in writing is Roman and although there's nothing literary about my Six Romances for viola and piano each piece tells its own story open to individual inner interpretation. Portal forms the opening chapter so to speak pavingthe way for the second movement named Even Song. Maybe it's just a simple tune heard at sunset perhaps the melody is carried from far away over the hills from inside the village church...Titles such as Ballad and Dirge (song of mourning) immediately reveal the nature and mood of the music to come where-as the concluding piece Duet is slightly more 'mysterious.'In a classic duet the two instruments in question or more likely voices complement each other benevolently. In the present case however the viola and the piano both stand firm protection their own turf - and - 'the twain shall never meet!'The piece is very short indeed it just stops leaving the listener to finish the 'story' in his or her own imagination. A true open ending. (Poul Ruders)

Joseph Addison is not particularly well known; he was English a classical scholar essayist poet and politician but one of his hymns was used by Benjamin Britten. in his setting of a Thomas Tallis canon. The hymn is singularly beautiful and being a composer always inspired by extramusical stimuli such as poems nature paintings I was immediately convinced when I carne across the Addison hymn that here was exactly what I wanted to use as my major source of inspiration for this piece commissioned by and written for The Berlin Philharmonic. I don't refer to the hymn in its entirety but have chosen the following 3 excerpts all acting as mottos for the first three sections of the piece thus turning the piece into a straightforward tonepoem in the classical
