The motivation for composing this test piece for the Concert Division Brassband of the 2001 WMC was Rob Goorhuis's deep respect for one of the greatest Dutch composers of the 20-th century who also enlarged the wind band repertoire in a most valuable way. Goorhuis wanted to light up the soft and kind side of the brassband and wrote about this composition : The basis is a theme of twelve tones wich Badings once played at an International Organ Improvisation Contest in Haarlem. My organ teacher participated in that contest and so the theme remained somehow in the back of my mind. The composer worked out a series of variations and clustered them into bundles ofthree and so the melody kept its diversity while remaining easy to recognise. Verplicht werk groot repertorium 1e divisie brassband.

‘Yn Ieren en Sinen’ (‘with much conviction’) was commissioned by CMV Harmonie Sneek (Friesland, The Netherlands) to mark their 95th anniversary. As requested by the commissioning party, the composer based this work on the life of a former member of the band, who played flugelhorn until the age of 86. Music was very important in the eventful life of the man in question. A passionate musician, he had a great love for chorale melodies, and his favourite piece, the famous Canon by the English composer Thomas Tallis (1505-1585) was the source of inspiration for this composition.

This work was commissioned by the Miyazaki Prefectural Police Band from Kyushu, Japan, and was premièred in 2017. Bandmaster Sano is an elder alumni of Musashino Academia Musicae, Toyko, where Satoshi Yagisawa also studied. He asked Yagisawa to write a brilliant one-minute fanfare that could be played as an opening piece for any concert. It will be perfect for yours! Scottish Dances is based on three Scottish traditionals: Cock of the North, The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond and Marie's Wedding. I. Cock of the North's name is used for multiple things or events. For example for a locomotive to a famous, it seems, delicious liqueur, and rallies to snowboard competitions. Furthermore is Cock O' the North a nickname of a famous Duke. (The 4th Duke of Gordon). In this composition Cock of the North (a Jig) is a traditional Scottish bagpipe tune, regularly played on tattoos by Pipe Bands. Not infrequently the drummers sing the text. The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond is about a sad story that took place during an revolt against the British. In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie had to retreat. Two of his men were captured. One was convicted and executed, while the other was released. The spirit of the executed soldier would arrive in Scotland via the 'low road' (underworld) before his companion, who had still a long way to go. A solid piece in a processional style by noted composer Joseph Compello, Horizons is both melodic and engaging. The work has a strong lyrical line that is beautifully blended with an enchanting pizzicato section. This helps to augment the driving pulse th.The processional style of Horizons will be ideal for young string ensembles which are seeking a more serious style of music but which are not yet capable of performing at a brisk tempo. Older groups, however, should not perform this piece at a fast pace, otherwise the processional feel will be lost. The articulation throughout should be marcato except where otherwise marked. A light staccato touch is required in the accompaniment beginning at bar 11. Very young ensembles always need guidance in performing accents and loud dynamics tastefully. At m. 20, the cellos have a countermelody which is separate from the bass part. If the ensemble does not have basses, the part may be covered on the piano. At m. 45, the cellos have optional notes to allow extra time to prepare for pizzicato. Likewise at m. 53, cues are included for violin 2, viola and cello to allow time to prepare for arco. The effectiveness of the final section beginning at m. 71 should be played as broadly as possible. The 100 tempo is a suggestion.Performance time with the repeat is just under three minutes.Thank you for choosing this composition. I hope you and your students enjoy performing it.- Joseph CompelloGlen Arm, Maryland, 2005.

Corpus Cum Figuris is a uniform composition in three major parts. The first part is a slow marche funébre, a kind of prologue with dark and sombre sounds and a massive wall of chords which leads us to the other part of the works where the static and solemn atmosphere is suddenly stopped and replaced by a rhythmic/melodic ritual which accelerates the music. In the third part the block structure is softened gradually, different figurations and stylistic elements arise to live their own lives: distant waltzes and pictures from the Middle Ages appear in this gigantic sonorous body. After a wild percussion orgy a short flash-back and a scream from the edge end Corpus cum Figuris. The piece has no literal content at all, even though the title leads the thought to Adrian Leverkühn's Apocalipsis cum Figuris from Thomas Mann's Doctor Faustus. More likely, my piece will arouse associations as with all my music. It has to be heard in it's own conditions, in this case as a big body of music or perhaps as a great screen where the details, of course, are part of the whole body but at the same time are foreign and odd. It is as if one climbs a mountain and from the top of that mountain discovers a world which is completely different from expected. Corpus cum Figuris for 20 musicians was composed in 1984, commissioned by Ensemble InterContemporain and the Danish Radio. Ensemble InterContemporain world premiered the work in April 1985 conducted by Peter Eötvös. The piece was also played at the ISCM-festival in Amsterdam by Netherland Radio Chamber Orchestra conducted by Ernest Bour.

With Accanto we were fortunate in being able to film sectional rehearsals with Helmut Lachenmann for 10 hours - resulting in six extensive films, mostly in English, dealing with the individual instrumental groups. We were not able to film an individual rehearsal for the solo instrument, since the clarinetist Nina Janssen-Deinzer had already played the piece earlier, she was therefore already fully prepared. Commissioned by the Nevine String Quartet, an ensemble of players from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Ritchie's second string quartet is an impressive synthesis of sophistication and emotion. The first movement is dominated by energetic compound meters and rhythms, with motivic ideas derived from a magic square, while the second movement's quiet rocking motion is pervaded by minor thirds, a common interval in children's songs. The third movement is a vigorous ternary form, with melodic lines that are angular and restless. Its middle section, by contrast, is simple and calm in mood, with a folk-like waltz in the first violin. The allegro molto finale features a rustic theme on viola and concludes with motifs from the other movements invading the texture, bringing the work to a frenetic close.

For flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (B flat), 2 bassoons, double bassoon or bass tuba, 4 horns (E flat major/B flat) with additional parts for horns in F. When he was a mere 18 years old, Richard Strauss composed the highly Romantic, one-movement Serenade for Wind Instruments, op. 7. Extremely popular among wind players to this day, this work recalls in instrumentation and structure Mozart's “Gran Partitaâ€, which certainly served as a model for Strauss. The serenade was not premiered in its Bavarian homeland as might have been expected, butrather in Dresden, in 1882, under the direction of the then much-esteemed conductor Franz Wüllner, who had also given the inaugural performances of Richard Wagner's Rheingold and Die Walküre and later premiered Strauss' tone poems Till Eulenspiegel and Don Quixote. So it was a great honour for the young Bavarian! Editor Norbert Gertsch presents this little masterwork here for the first time in Urtext quality - in full score and instrumental parts - for which not just the first edition but also the autograph manuscript was scrutinised fastidiously.
