Evening Lullaby is based on the poem Lullaby by Louisa May Alcott. This poem describes nature's response to the evening and narrates how various creatures are soothed to sleep by the evening's quiet melody. When performing, please bear in mind the lilting feel of the 3/4 time signature. Placing emphasis on the strong beat (beat 1) should create the soothing, rocking motion needed for the lullaby. Within each phrase, connect the lines while performing the rise and fall of the dynamics. In respect to dynamics, be careful not to exceed mezzo-forte while always maintaining energy in the tone. Regarding the harmonic texture, be intentional to blend and balance each section with tall vowels and steady vibrato as suspensions are prevalent throughout the piece.  .

Joel Martinson's setting of the evening canticles balances a rare sensitivity to the text with an exuberant use of voices and organ. The Magnificat opens with sopranos alone supported by a gently undulating accompaniment. The flow of the text is sustained throughout by the use of mixed meters. He hath shown strength with his arm, is set in a rapid, syncopated style which returns for the Glory be to the Father section. The Nunc Dimittis begins lyrically and quietly in all parts and gradually builds to a strong conclusion as the harmony and texture increase in intensity. Mr. Martinson's combination of rhythmic drive and sensitively changing harmonies create a fresh and vital setting of these beloved words for the service of Evensong.

This piece is a reworking of the song ‘An end’ from the composer's song cycle ...too bitter sweet (Op. 27) and takes its title from a line in the Rosetti poem, which suggests an overall mood of regret and nostalgia. Based on a rising minor arpeggio in an E modal minor tonality, the main theme is varied slightly on each statement. Likewise the secondary motif, first heard in bars 27 to 30, is presented differently each time. Wistful throughout and unashamedly melodic, the flute part is in constant dialogue with the piano accompaniment.
