Les quatre saisons (opus 8, n° 1-4) est un ensemble de quatre concertos pour violon soliste et orchestre de chambre à cordes, composé par Antonio Vivaldi, et qui ouvre le recueil La bataille entre l'harmonie et l'invention. Bien qu’édité en 1725 à Amsterdam, la composition de ces quatre concertos est certainement antérieure de quelques années.
Cette œuvre est l'une des plus représentative du genre Concerto, c'est aussi certainement la composition la plus connue d’Antonio Vivaldi. Le printemps est le nom que porte le concerto n° 1 en mi majeur (op. 8, RV 269). Il est se compose de trois mouvements : Allegro, Largo, Allegro. Son introduction, comme le troisième mouvement de l'œuvre (L’Été), sont les passages les plus célèbres de cet opus. Sur la partition, le compositeur précise les correspondances avec les poèmes, il va même jusqu'à expliciter certains détails (aboiements de chien, noms d'oiseaux : coucou, tourterelle, pinson...). L’ensemble de l’œuvre est accompagnée de quatre sonnets décrivant le déroulement des saisons. Voici celui du Printemps :

La mélodie originale de « A vous dirai-je maman » n'est pas composé par le célèbre Mozart. La première publication de cette comptine date de 1761 dans les « amusements d'une Heure et Demy » par Mr Bouin. Le thème musical est aussi associé à une des plus populaires chansons enfantines anglaises intitulée « Twinkle, twinkle, star » (brille, brille, petite étoile). Cette version française devait être familière à Mozart pour qu'il compose à l'âge de 22 ans, douze variations d'après cette comptine. Etant donné le tempérament ambitieux et sévère de son père, il est probable que Mozart est choisi la mélodie de cette comptine pour le taquiner. Sie bestanden lange Zeit nebeneinander, wobei sich schliesslich die franzosische Tabulatur, der ein Liniensystem (fur die Saiten), auf dem die Bunde durch Buchstaben gekennzeichnet wurden, zugrunde lag, als die praktischste erwies. Um die in diesen verschiedenen Griffzeichenschriften niedergeschriebenen Kompositionen allgemein zuganglich zu machen, ist es zweckmassig, sie in die heute gultige Notenschrift umzusetzen. Da aber die Tabulaturdrucke und -manuskripte leider oft sehr fehlerhaft und unvollstandig sind, verlangt die Ubertragung grosse Sachkenntnis; zuweilen ist die Auslese an wirklich guter Musik im Verhaltnis zur aufgewendeten Zeit recht gering. Um aber dem Anliegen, moglichst viele qualitatsvolle und dennoch auf der Gitarre leicht spielbare Kompositionen vorzulegen, gerecht zu werden, sind in die Sammlung neben Ubertragungen aus Tabulaturen fur Gitarre auch solche aus Tabulaturen fur Calichon, Mandora und Renaissancelaute aufgenommen worden. Von einem grossen Teil der Stucke sind die Komponisten unbekannt, da sie in den Quellen nicht genannt werden - eine Erscheinung, die in fast allen Tabulaturen zu beobachten ist. Die alteste uns bekannte Gitarrenmusik (Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts) stammt aus Uberlieferungen fur die viersaitige (doppelchorig) spanische Gitarre. Gegen Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts wurde die Gitarre funfsaitig (doppelchorig) und erst etwa 200 Jahre spater erhielt sie die sechste Saite - jedoch einchorig - und hat sich so bis heute erhalten. Die Stimmung von Calichon und Mandora war die gleiche wie die der Gitarre, allerdings waren sie bereits seit der Wende vom 17. zum 18. Jahrhundert sechssaitig. Es ist durchaus legitim, die fur Calichon und Mandora uberlieferten Kompositionen auf der Gitarre zum Klingen zu bringen -dies um so mehr, da kaum mit der Wiedererweckung und Verbreitung der beiden Instrumente zu rechnen ist. Anders verhalt es sich mit der Renaissancelaute, die heute wieder haufiger gespielt wird. Sie hat die gleichen Saitenintervalle (Quarten und Terz) wie die Gitarre, lediglich dass das Terzintervall zwischen der dritten und vierten Saite liegt. Im Interesse der weitaus grosseren Zahl von Gitarrespielern wurden fur die vorliegende Sammlung nur solche Stucke ausgewahlt, die auf der Gitarre bequem zu greifen sind. Dem Lautenspieler werden sie infolge ihres geringen Schwierigkeitsgrades ebenfalls sehr willkommen sein. Den im Quellenverzeichnis genannten Bibliotheken, in denen ich zum Teil schon vor mehr als 50 Jahren begonnen habe, alte Lauten- und Gitarrentabulaturen fur diese und andere Ausgaben zu sichten und zu sammeln, sei bestens fur die Uberlassung von Handschriften, Drucken und Filmen zur Ubertragung oder zum Vergleich gedankt. Die Wiedergabe der Stucke folgt so weit wie moglich den Originalquellen, lediglich offensichtliche Fehler wurden stillschweigend korrigiert. The popularity of Purcell's setting is apparent from the many sources that survive and from the printed extracts which appeared almost immediately after its first performance. The primary source for this edition is the largely autograph manuscript in the Bodleian Library. Rather to reduce the orthography to a norm, the capitalization of the vocal text favours Purcell's preferences. Der SWR-Redakteur Hans-Peter Jahn schreibt dazu im Programmheft: Die fur Smolka typischen minimalistischen Taktzellen schaffen eine archaische Sinnlichkeit. Eine einfache und zugleich streng gebaute Vokalmusik mit Tiefenwirkung.
Nach der Urauffuhrung war die Esslinger Zeitung hellauf begeistert: Smolka ist ein Meister der Stimmbehandlung und der chorischen Klanggestaltung. Im Zentrum des Stucks gerat die Musik zum Stillstand: im leisen gleichmassigen Summen uber dem plotzlich fortissimo ein tschechisches Kinderlied erklingt eines das der Vater seinen Kindern haufig vorgesungen hat. He was a legendary teacher of Music History at Prague Music Academy critic recording producer composer; for almost 50 years he was an important and highly respected personality of Prague musical life. My father devoted a lot of time and energy to musical education and activities of my sister and me using often quite original methods such as teaching of intervals and counterpoint through Bartok's Microcosmos ear training filling all imaginable moments of everyday life or lessons of harmony analysis starting with Overture to Tristan and Musorgsky's Catacombs. The Martinu song Wondering Maiden was his solo number in our home vocal productions which he used to sing with amazing devotion while his huge voice was audible in several neighboring streets. My Agnus Dei is closely bound to all this history e.g. by using canon and preferring beauty of dissonant seconds like Bartok or quoting Martinu and his refined neoclassical harmony. Father would be probably a bit critical about the minimalistic monotony of the main body of the piece. Nevertheless firstly he would improvise a short lecture of history of Agnus Dei in Requiem in Czech Music naming by heart many dates and all examples of changes of order of the traditional text by composers. This work, written by Maxwell Davies in 1983 for chamber orchestra, was commissioned to celebrate the quartercentenary of Edinburgh University. The first performance was given by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Edward Harper in October 1983. Duration c. 29mins. This work was thought through in outline following a visit to the ruined pre-Reformation church of Hoy in Orkney, on a fine Spring afternoon after Maxwell Davies had played the harmonium for the tiny congregation in its large bleak Victorian replacement. The old church was surrounded by the graves of centuries, the more recent ones with familiar names, largely of people who lived in houses now ruinous - crofters, fishermen, clerics, sea-captains. Next to it stood the chief farmhouse, the Bu, going back to Viking times. He thought of the lives and deaths encompassed there, expressed through hundreds of years of music in the church, and in the big barn of the farm. The plainsongs 'Dies Irae' and 'Victimae Paschali Laudes' are used throughout the work - the first concerning the Day of Judgement, from the Mass for the Dead, the second particular to Easter Sunday and the Resurrection. These are subject to constant transformation - the intervallic contour slowly changes from one into the other, and their notes are made to dance through Renaissance astrological 'magic square' patterns. My own life in music has been driven by a quest to find strong female role models, trails to follow, shoulders to stand on. In Nora Douglas Holt, I find an inspiring example of creativity, independence, and resilience – with a dash of troublemaking. She was a free spirit, a force of nature, and she lived a fascinating and eventful life on her own terms. She reinvented herself through five marriages and at least as many careers. From her beginnings at the piano at age four, she explored many avenues of musical expression – performing, composing, music journalism, broadcasting, teaching – all with inventiveness, style, and zeal.She made the most of the Roaring ’20s, as an artist, socialite, jetsetter, muse, and patroness of the Harlem Renaissance. Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 is a work which has both fascinated and perplexed musicologists and performers for many years.
