Trapeze is essentially programmatic. The introduction and ending have no resemblance to the main body of the piece. Imagine here introductions and preparations made before the actual performance begins. The overall mood is fun and entertaining with a slight sense of trepidation. The continuous semiquaver movements denote the continuous back and forth repetition of the swinging of the trapeze, where the slightly disjointed melody gives a feeling of anticipation. What is coming next? How high? How fast? The conclusion imitates the introduction, very slightly changed, as this time we have dismounting and taking bows.Hopefully both the performers and audience will feel somewhat uplifted.

La musica eurocolta ha adottato, a causa della notazione e nel corso del tempo, una gran serie di convenzioni estetiche ed esecutive che riesce difficile abbandonare nel momento del confronto con i documenti musicali e le notazioni più antiche; non per nulla la trascrizione in notazione moderna ha lo scopo di fornire, ai musicisti interessati alle prassi storiche, spartiti di più facile disponibilità e lettura.
Tale passaggio continua però a rappresentare un problema interpretativo cruciale, anche in considerazione del fatto che le notazioni antiche lasciavano alla tradizione orale una quantità di elementi di antica origine, sui quali è necessario porre grande attenzione per non incorrere in gravi errori di metodo.
Questo breve testo ha lo scopo di facilitare coloro che intraprendono il proprio viaggio in questo cosmo musicale, che più di altri richiede prudente immaginazione per essere esplorato. L’interpretazione della musica antica verte infatti necessariamente sul limite tra vero e falso; una composizione musicale, antica, anonima, ma autentica, merita lo stesso rispetto che oggi viene riservato ai compositori riconosciuti e celebrati e non può essere confusa con tutto ciò che bisogna avere il coraggio di definire storicamente falso o esteticamente incongruo.

The two-part composition has always been an essential stage in didactic treatises for teaching counterpoint; the Duo has been of fundamental importance, since the early decades of the sixteenth century, in the teaching of singing and in instrumental practice.
The interpretation and performance of Scarlatti’s Fughe a Due require on the one hand a correct and prompt interpretation of the chords which are the basis of the movement and the relationship between the two parts, and on the other an indispensable invention of a third or even a fourth part (to ensure, above all, full and significant harmony).
An indication of this practice of filling in is offered by the same ms. source containing Scarlatti’s Fughe a Due. In Fugue II in D minor, in the first eleven bars, we find indicated above the Bass a series of numbers showing the interval in relation to the respective upper line. These indications should not be confused with the numerical marking typical of the basso continuo and of the partimento, for they establish a clear sign of the usual practice exercised in the teaching of counterpoint in order to guide the student visually to pass safely and speedily from two to three or more parts; this type of numbering is often found in the counterpoint methods of the time, in particular in the section illustrating the Contrapunto semplice e Diminuito.
These fifteen Fughe a Due, unlike the many Duos and Duets which figure in the counterpoint methods, are not a simple display of formulas, but they assert themselves as a calculated sample of characterized styles and genres, a series of pieces conceived with an exquisite sense of form.
