Alban Berg's Es ist ein Reis entsprungen for SATB choir a capella. Alban Maria Johannes Berg was an Austrian composer of the Second Viennese School. His compositional style combines Romantic lyricism with twelve-tone technique.

In the year 1368 a rapacious character takes up residence in the castle of Rijnesteyn at Cothen. He is Johan bastard son of the Bishop of Utrecht.Round this now so peaceful castle eventful matters are enacted. In part one Johan and Willem Gulik of Guelders set out to do battle against King Charles of France. On their return in part two Johan captures two French goldsmiths in Hainault and incarcerates them at Castle Rijnesteyn. Part three is a musical representation of a courtly ballet in medieval style. The final part relates how Jan van Rijnesteyn goes to war against Hendrik van Vianen and Lord of 'Goy Viscount of Utrecht.Jan loots hispossessions and threathens to conquer all. In het jaar 1368 betrekt een roofzuchtig heerschap het kasteel Reijnestein te Cothen.Het is Johan de bastaardzoon van de Utrechtse bisschop. Rond dit nu zo vredig gelegen ridderslot hebben zich toen geruchtmakende taferelen afgespeeld. In het eerste deel trekt Johan met Willem Gullik de hertog van Gelre ten strijde tegen koning Karel van Frankrijk. De terugreis speelt zich af in het tweede deel. Tijdens deze reis neemt Johan in Henegouwen twee Franse goudsmeden gevangen en sluit ze op in de kerker van slot Rijnesteyn. Deel 3 is de muzikale weergave van een hoofs ballet in middeleeuwse stijl. In het laatste deel wordt verteld hoe Jan van Rijnesteyn in 1396 ten strijde trekt tegen Hendrik van Vianen en de heer van't Goy burggraaf van Utrecht. Jan plundert diens goederen en dreigt diens bezittingen te veroveren.

The atmosphere of the Wild West is caught in a striking and most imaginative way by young composer Andreas Schulte in this work. A caravan of gold- and fortuneseekers launch themselves into a big adventure and begin their rush westward. The first movement desciribes these first days of buoyancy and optimism in a crisp march. Near the campfire the pioneers rest themselves and the music expresses feelings of romance nostalgia for the past and hopes for the future. A wistful melody very characteristically communicates these feelings. Relaxation takes place in the third movement which is a musical characterization of a rodeo and its attendant festivities.It is obvious that sometimes something goes wrong and this aspect can also be heard. Nevertheless the valiant rider wins in the end. With a flashback to the beginning the journey is completed musically thus giving the composition a dignified finale. De muzikale reis voert via het 1e deel Amazonia (feest in Latijns-Amerika) het 2e deel Rainforest (sfeervolle klanken uit het tropisch regenwoud met hoornsolo) het 3e deel The Rising Sun (Japan met bugelsolo) het 4e deel Drums of Thunder (drums uit de Sahara) het 5e deel Celtic Dream (Keltische volksmuziek met sopraansax- en euphoniumsolo) naar uiteindelijk de Verenigde Staten in het 6e deel Earth Walk (met trombone- altsax (trompet)- en drumsolo). Maar liefst 20 minuten multiculturele en vaakspectaculaire muziek in dit topwerk van Peter Graham.

Aurea Luce was written at the request of Madeleine Mitchell and Geoff Poole by way ofcelebrating my 50th birthday at a concert in my home town of Shaftesbury Dorset. The work is based on a plainsong melody sung as a hymn for the Feast of St. Peter s Chair in Rome reflecting the dedication of the church in which the premiere took place. I started writing the work on International Women s Day 2015 and it was serendipitous that thehymn s text is ascribed very unusually to a 5th century female author Elpis (reputedly the first wife of the philosopher Boethius). The title translates as ..with golden light.. and in context within the verse it readsas:Aurea luce et decore roseo lux lucis omne perfudisti seculum decoran caelos inclito martyrio hac sacra die quae dat reis veniam (The Poissy Antiphonal fol. 412v)(The beauteous light of Eternity hath ooded with blissful res this golden day which crowns the Prince of the Apostles and gives unto the guilty a free way to heaven).Duration: c. 9 minutes

These songs from his estate are here published as a collection for the first time. The dedications are very personal and intimate, in keeping with the private realm of the compositions.
